Gov Lalong Presents the 2018 Budget Tagged "Budget of Rescure and Consolidation".

Loud Applause for Plateau Golf Tournament

Last Sunday, a week-long Governors Cup golf event played out at the Lamingo Golf Club in Jos. In its entire entirety, the event was sheer carnival. Two Governors, those of Edo, Godwin Obaseki and Bauchi, Barrister Muhammed Abubakar, and the powerful Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi joined the host and Plateau Governor, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong, to present a spectacle golf event that will stand out for a long time to come.

Events occurred on fast pace. Over 100 professionals participated. When it was over, Minna based Professional, Martin Odoh, returning a 10-over score came out as winner with a stunning N850,000 to show for such sterling effort. Okpe, equally from Minna carded 12-over to come second while Agwon Emmanuel returned 16-over to finish third. It was believed that the trio were heading for a bountiful Christmas. But Governor Lalong was going to throw the trio a certain freebie.

While showing deep appreciation at the huge turnout despite what he termed a rumoured unrest in Jos, Lalong moved to announce that himself and his family would be giving special prizes to the three front-runners in the Pro cadre. This all came down to N1 million to the winner, N700,000 to the runner-up and N500,000 to the third place.

“There was so much talks about unrest in Plateau before the event”, Lalong stated. “The information was wrong and at a point I was thinking golfers outside Plateau would not turn up. But look at the unprecedented crowd we had. This goes a long way to show the power of this game called golf.

“Again look at the Edo Governor coming from that far jst to feature in this event. This is amazing but we are going to cut his Handicap. I don’t know he plays such fluid golf. Minister of Transportation has not played for some years now but he came here to play. Well, we can forgive him for spraying his shots everywhere but the fairways. I indeed pitied him. After the game, we went home to have a short rest. When it was time for prize Giving, I called him so we could leave for the closing ceremony. But he couldn’t make it. He was fagged out. This shows he has not played for a while. But I am indeed proud at the quality of people who are visiting Jos to play golf. This will tell on our Tourism and commerce”.

A prominent member of the Lamingo Golf Club, Chris Shaiyen said he was amazed at huge rate of marketing that happened during the week-long event.

Gov Lalong Promoting peace with Golf

As a child of destiny, Plateau State Governor, Rt Hon. Simon Bako Lalong, grew up with an Igbo man who was married to his aunt. At that time, the civil war broke out. At a point guns were booming, the Igbo in-law locked him in a room to ensure he was safe. When the guns died down, the door was opened for him to come out. When he came out, what he met on the ground left him with blinding tears of anguish. The Igbo in-law who locked him in the room so he could be safe was on the ground, cold, dead and covered with blood from booming guns of war.

When Nigerians talk of repositioning, Lalong is always there to tell them to embrace peace since Nigeria is home for all. But this is the irony. When Lalong came to power, he discovered there were skirmishes of unrest among youths in the Plateau and he desired to arrest the situation at once. Being a man who governs entirely by tradition and an unwritten code of conduct, Lalong reached out to golf, a game he has been playing ever before he became Governor, to maintain peace in the volatile Plateau.

Lalong loves the life of sobriety. He cares for people and this could be reason Karma is on his side. He is almost flawless, just like his ‘follow through’ on the fairways. Yes, he plays off 14-Handicap and this makes him a solid golfer. Lalong is never in search of elusive shadow people call happiness. Again, he doesn’t surround himself with enervating luxuries. You won’t see him coming. He’s so plain, so calm, just like your next neighbor. But he loves golf to that point he could offer his right arm just to have a game.

Why golf? Several times, Lalong would tell you that golf is for people who love the life of sobriety and those who want to attain the absolute pinnacle of success. Lalong will tell you that golf demands the utmost in situations of mental, emotional and physical stress. This is reason he brought the game to numerous people in Plateau State.

Before he came to power, some four big golf courses in Jos were simply experiencing the silence of the grave yard. There could be occasional roars when certain white settlers and the big guns decided to have a game. At that time, the game of golf was being related to Polo where you must have your wallet filled with wads before you dare venture arriving the Tee box. But Lalong changed all that. Go to Jos today and you will see several people on the breadline walking the fairways. Lalong just demystified the untidy belief that golf is not meant for hungry people. Go to Jos, especially the Lamingo Golf course where General Yakubu Gowon and Lalong play their golf and you will see kids, from age four, being tutored on how to swing swiftly. Success is being achieved here. Kids are no longer restless in Plateau. The urge to play golf has enveloped each one of them. This is the Lalong intervention and ultimate peace is being achieved through it.

As you read this, a week-long Governor’s Cup is on at the Lamingo course. It’s the third in the series and over 100 professionals are playing and 400 amateurs will join on Saturday and Sunday. The bill to see this through is huge but Lalong ensures state money doesn’t come into this. His numerous friends in the private sectors are paying.
Hear Lalong: “I have learnt what peace means, in the hard way of course,  and this is the only thing I can share to humanity. The game of golf depicts this and this is why I want to help whoever is interested to play. I am happy a lot of our people are playing and our courses are busy through several sponsorships coming from my friends in the private sectors. Our commerce is growing. Our peace is growing. More hotels are springing up because more tourists are coming to Jos to play golf. We shall do more in this aspect”.

Former Plateau Lawmakers accused of manhandling journalist

Two former lawmakers in the Plateau State House of Assembly yesterday allegedly manhandled a journalist with Liberty TV at the Jos High court premises in Plateau state.

The journalist, Buhari Bukar Bello, was at High Court 5 with colleagues to cover proceedings on a suit filed by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) against the former lawmakers and six of their colleagues over alleged corrupt practices amounting to N32 million.

The defendants had informed the court that Bello was recording their faces and court proceedings with an electronic device, an allegation the journalist denied.
Presiding Justice Christine Dabup ordered the confiscation of Bello’s camera and phone, which were later returned to him after the court proceedings.

“The law allows for the recording of proceedings using pen and paper, not electronic devices of phones,” Justice Dabup said.

But after the court proceedings, Bello told journalists that Hon Istifanus Mwansat, a former speaker had cornered him, snatched his camera and issued him with threats, while Hon. Joyce Ramnap, a former Deputy Speaker had pushed him against the wall as other ex-legislators showered him with abuses. He however said Mwansat later returned his camera.
