Press Release By The Berom Youth Moulders-Association.....

31st Dec 2018.

It has become necessary to address the public following the recent spade of attacks on some Berom communities by the Fulani terrorists that led to the lost of over 18 lives while 3 persons were badly wounded in the last one week.
Just yesterday, 30th Dec 2018, members of the COCIN youth fellowship Nding were returning home from a Church program and their car was ambushed by the Fulani militias and killed 5 of them at Nding village in Fan District. Also, Dorok Village in Foron was attacked and two people were killed. At the moment, Nding Susut is under heavy attack.

You would recall that in June 2018, the Fulani terrorists launched a full scale attack on Gashish, Ropp, Shonong, Jol, La-Pam Dyet (Du) and Fan communities. This led to the lost of over 300 lives, many were injured and over 9 villages destroyed which are well reported.

Today, the terrorist have resorted to ambushing our people and killing the victims in a guerilla attack.

We are concerned because the security agencies saddled with the responsibility of ensuring peace and security seem to be helpless.

Between August and December 2018, over 40 Berom persons have been murdered in cold blood by the same terrorist, 487 cows and 17 goats rustled and several houses destroyed in Fan, Foron, Rim, Kwi, Jol, Ropp and Vwang.

We condemn these attacks in totality and call on the government to leave up to its constitutional obligation of protecting lives and properties of its citizens.

We view these attacks as attempt by the Fulani to take over our ancestral heritage.

We therefore call on Berom people to be security conscious and be on red alert so as to resist all attempts by these terrorists.

Press Release From The Plateau Debate Group(PGD) On The Selection Of Candidates For The 2019 Gubernatorial Debate....

29th December 2018

You are aware that the Plateau Debate Group made a commitment to host a live debate for the candidates vying for the office of the Governor of our state. We also communicated that due to the limitation of time and space, we shall be unable to host all 22 candidates. For this reason, we embarked on a painstaking process of pre-qualifying the top contenders for the office.

Three criteria were used in this preselection process: the first criterion is the candidates' popularity on a Facebook poll opened from the 12 December to the 23 December 2018; the second criterion was the candidates' popularity in a field survey carried out in the three senatorial districts of the state; last, we also considered the incumbency factor as it is fair and natural that an incumbent should participate in a debate where several candidates are contesting for the office he occupies.

Following this rigorous process, we aggregated the scores of the candidates and have a shortlist of 6, listed alphabetically:

i. ABP - Samuel Dan-Auta Kyarshik
ii. ADP - Jon Temlong
iii. ANN - Alex Ladan
iv. APC - Simon Lalong
v. PDP - Jeremiah Useni
vi. SDP - Godfrey Miri.

Recall that we had initially communicated that we would host 4 candidates in this debate. We were constrained to expand this number to 6 because the final aggregate scores were quite close and it would have been difficult to exclude any of the top 6 candidates fairly. To accommodate this change, we have also negotiated for the debate to be aired for 3 hours, as against the earlier 2 hours proposed. It is our believe that this will give more time for a deeper, richer discussion.

In the days ahead, we shall be communicating these outcomes to the candidates and their parties officially. The debate is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 26th January, 2019.

The Governor who also condoled his Sokoto State counterpart, Rt Hon Aminu Tambuwal, admonished the government and people of the state, as well as the entire Shagari family and community to take solace in the fact that all mortals must taste death at God’s appointed time.

Berom Youth Moulders-Association (BYM) Inaugurates its Newly Elected Excos....

On behalf of my team, I want to sincerely thank God Almighty for making this day a reality, as we accept the privilege to serve as leaders of thus great and historic organisation, the Berom Youth Moulders- Association (BYM) through the popular will of the people. We are humbled with the fact that we are just first among equals.

At this gracious and solemn occasion, we humbly avail ourselves to be beacons of a collective will, hope,  vision of BYM with a pledge to be committed to the vision in all ramifications.
As you are all aware, the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) formerly known as ,Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) formerly known as BEROM YOUTH MOVEMENT is a community base organization that is desirous to unite into a common front to foster unity, love, progress and understanding amongst the Berom youths and also recognizing the need to consolidate ourselves, emancipate our people and discharge of our responsibilities as members of the society.
we wish to acknowledge the great strides our predecessors have made in pushing the BYM agenda to enviable heights, you did well and we hope to consolidate on most of your achievements.

Our top priority is to  restore the dignity and respect the association enjoys, locally, nationally and internationally. Second, to reposition it as a hub for nurturing future leaders that will carry the vision of our founding fathers to  enviable heights with the globalised world in view.
Considering our present challenges, the agenda for our tenure are as follows;
1. Restoration of the pride and dignity of the organisation
2. Security and Reclamation of our displaced villages.
3. Promotion of peaceful & social coexistence amongst all districts
4. Economic empowerment of our youth.

The above are the four (4) cardinal agenda that we hope to form the nucleus of our tenure.

With hindsight, the Berom people have recorded many threats to their socioeconomic and cultural existence but quite recently, this has become more daunting, complex, bloody and dehumanising. The insecurity we face today on all flanks has recorded many deaths and rendered some of our loved ones, relatives and friends homeless. And this juncture, brothers and sisters, I crave your indulgence because this can never be overemphasised because this current situation leaves much to be desired. The founding fathers of this great organisation will never have imagined that one day some of our people will be called Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in their God given land! Today, the IDP situation in our land has become a daunting task alien to us but a sour reality which must be decisively addressed collectively. That is why the security of our people is inevitably among our topmost priorities as an EXCO.

We will continue to work, support and collaborate with all the security agencies, the government, social institutions, spirited organisations (private or public) and individuals to achieve the sustainable security and peace our lands were hitherto known for.

We are not oblivious of the fact that this security challenge is a national issue and as such our strategy will be to localise our approach to anything and anybody that threatens our collective existence as a people. This approach was well thought out considering for instance, the fact that the security challenges faced by Zamfara, Kaduna or Ebonyi may have particular patterns and peculiarities totally different from what we face here in Plateau state. So the approach in our wisdom must be localised. Enough is enough! Meekness isn't weakness.

Another critical clamour of the Berom youth today is economic emancipation. The enterprise and industry of the average Berom youth is phenomenal and admirable without enabling environments. So what if given enabling environments? Our youth will soar to enviable heights. With the present globalized environment driven by

Negligence, porous borders worsening security challenges- ANN candidate

25th December 2018

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

Vice Presidential candidate of the Alliance for New (ANN)  Khadijat Abdullahi, has said that negligence by security agencies and porous borders has worsened the country's security challenges.

Abdullahi bared her mind in an interview with  newsmen on Sunday in Jos after her advocacy tour of north central states.

The vice presidential candidate alleged that security agencies were not proactive and hence give the insurgents the opportunity to be on offensive while they (agencies) are cosigned to reactionery efforts after the damage is done.

"Nigerians are very much aware that the continuous insecurity in Nigeria is due to the porous nature of our borders.

"Government is fully aware, but has done nothing to curtail influx of weapons and foreigners into Nigeria, hence the increasing civil unrest,'' she said.

She stated that for the security situation to improve, there must be tight security at the nation's borders to check influx of weaponry and foreigners.

Abdullahi further said that the economic woes the country was going through was due to non implementation of people oriented policies to cushion the pains of Nigerians.

According to her, lack of sincerity in the implementation of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that could  assist poor Nigerians has exercebated economic hardship.

She stated that, when ANN takes over governance at the federal level, those who have been diverting public funds will have no hiding place.

Abduallahi who also spoke on recent harassment and forceful removal of billboards of ANN gubernatorial candidate in Plateau, said that the action would not affect the party's chances in 2019.

It will be recalled that the Jos Metropolitan Development Board (JMDB) recently pulled down Alex Ladan, ANN guber candidate's billboards mounted in strategic locations in Jos.

"It's indeed sad to hear such practice is happening here on the Plateau, to me whoever did that is only selling ANN to the public.

"The action shows that our party has a lot to offer," she added.

Mr Alex Ladan, the party's gubernatorial flag bearer in Plateau told Newsmen that the vice presidential candidate's visit to Plateau has further strengthened him and the party's chances.

Ladan expressed optimism that the ANN would emerge victorious in the 2019 general elections.

The guber candidate assured Plateau citizens that his administration if elected, would run an inclusive government that carry along all Plateau citizens.

Christmas- Gov Lalong Urges Christians To Emulate Christ.....

Xmas - Governor Lalong urges Christians to emulate Christ

25th December,2018

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, has felicitated with Christians in the state, the nation and the entire world as they celebrate the birthday of Jesus Christ, stressing that they should emulate the life of Jesus at Christmas.

Governor Lalong in a statement  signed by Mark Longyen, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Media and Publicity reads that  Christmas was not just a period to celebrate the birthday of Christ, but also a time for sober reflection, fervent prayers and an opportunity for all believers to demonstrate their love for all mankind, notwithstanding their religious differences, just as Jesus came  to salvage all mankind."

According to Lalong, Christians should emulate Christ by aligning themselves with all his teachings in every ramification, particularly as they celebrate his birthday. This, for instance, he said, should be by way of giving alms and sharing what we have with the the needy like the orphans, widows, and the homeless, among others.

The Governor said that as the 2019 general elections draw nearer, political parties and their supporters should conduct themselves peacefully and engage in issue-based campaigns to avoid overheating the polity and causing crises. He urged all politicians and their supporters, particularly the opposition, to shun the politics of bitterness and rancor in their campaigns, as well as pray
fervently for the successful conduct of the 2019 general elections.

“Without prayers, brotherly love, forgiveness, harmony, tolerance and accommodation, religion would be meaninglessness while peace would be elusive in the society,” the Governor admonished.

He stressed that religion should be the moral compass for all believers in their public and personal lives, and so people should let the teachings of their religions influence their conducts,so as to eliminate challenges such as election violence, corruption, kidnappings and killings, among others.

Governor Lalong reassured the people of the state that his administration would continue to take proactive measures to guarantee the security of lives and property, while sustaining the relative peace already attained and consolidating on the achievements so far made in the last three and a half years.

The Governor added that government would sustain the payment of salaries as and when due, complete inherited projects, resuscitate hitherto abandoned industries, construct new roads, particularly rural roads across the state, develop health and school facilities, and continue with the existing interventions in the electrification, water supply and other critical infrastructure in all the nooks and crannies of Plateau State.

Plateau  2019: Gov. Lalong set to defeat Gen. Useni to retain seat – Longyen

22nd December 2018

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

Senior Special Adviser (SSA) to Governor Simon Lalong on Media  affairs Mark Longyen,  on Saturday said that Lalong is  set to defeat the PDP Governorship Candidate, Gen. Jeremiah Useni in the 2019 polls to retain his seat.

Useni had during the inauguration of PDP 41-Member Campaign Council, said that the people of Plateau were disappointed and tired of the leadership style of Lalong and were yearning for a change of government and return of PDP.

The PDP Governorship candidate had claimed that the Plateau people couldn’t wait any longer ``to get rid of a leadership that has turned against them and betrayed their trust. I can see that our people have never been so united and unanimous in their resolve to usher in good governance and restore the state’s past glory.’’
According to him, ``there is no better time as this to be part of the team that will enforce the quit notice served by the people on the present administration/’’
But Longyen, in a chat with newsmen in Jos, described the claim by PDP that Plateau people are fade up with the Lalong’s and APC administration as ``great fallacy’’ of our time.
The SSA said all the opposition were out to do was to see how they could pull down the Lalong administration by engaging in various ``unwholesome and unholy means that are baseless and fruitless.’’
``Our successes as APC led administration have made them to develop goose pimples, so as the weaker party in this political contest, they latch on every straw to gain relevance.
``The truth is that they have nothing new to offer and the people are aware of their antecedents, antics and intrigues and they will never want to return to Egypt, which is synonymous with the old PDP, ’’ he said.
Longyen further claimed, ``Lalong has performed exceedingly well. The records speak for themselves and the people of Plateau are with him come 2019.’’
"Governor Lalong is set to defeat the retired Genera (Useni).’’
According to him, APC did not expect the opposition parties to sing their praise because ``all they are doing is to rubbish all our achievements, which are but efforts in futility.’’

Plateau violence: NGO trains 300 `peace monitors’ to detect early warning signs

20th December 2018

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

As part of proactive measures toward ending the protracted violence on the Plateau, an NGO, Humanitarian Dialogue (HD), has trained 300 `peace monitors’ to detect and report early warning signs.

Mr Babatunde Afolabi, HD Senior Programme Manager, at the launch of its Situation Room in Jos on Wednesday, said that such reports would assist security agencies to take prompt measures to avoid a breakdown of law and order.
He said that 160 mobile phones had been deployed into Plateau communities for the task.
“We expect the `peace monitors’ to provide real time situation of a crisis before it escalates,” he said.
The manager emphasised the need for collaboration and partnership with all stakeholders to achieve the desired goal, saying that such togetherness was “very critical” to permanent peace in Plateau.
“HD has realised that a key factor responsible for the resurgence of conflicts in Plateau is the non-implementation of recommendations contained in peace agreements.
“We are also aware that most contending issues had been dealt with, either in some earlier-brokered peace agreements, government white papers, or the recommendations contained in the reports of special panels or commissions of inquiry.
“From our findings, the non-implementation of the recommendations appears to be responsible for the constant recurrence of the violence,” he said.
Gov. Simon Lalong, in his remarks, said that his administration has made peace and security a prime priority because it was key to the success of every other activity.

Gov Lalong Empowers More Persons, Vows To Banish Poverty...

Lalong empowers more persons  ,vows to banish poverty

Plateau state Governor Simon Lalong on Wednesday empowered  thousands more  persons in Jos stressing that his administration is determined to better the lives of the downtrodden in the state

Speaking at  the inauguration of the third phase of the Simon Lalong empowerment scheme (SLEMS 3)  in Jos ,the Governor said "This program is very dear to my heart because of its ability to banish poverty among the women and youth. "This is also in tandem with the Chinese saying that you “give a man fish and you feed him for one day, but teach him how to fish and you will feed him for life.”"

He said "You will recall that on my assumption of office about three and half years ago, I promised to ensure that women and youth empowerment and employment would be given topmost priority in order to reduce and subsequently banish poverty in the state in line with the cardinal policy thrusts of my administration. I am happy to say that I have not let down the people in this regard."

" In order to lay the foundation for the achievement of this much cherished goal and objective, I immediately established the Plateau State Micro Finance, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency, PLASMEDA via an Executive Bill that was promptly passed by the state legislature. The Agency is saddled with the responsibility to enhance the entrepreneurial capacity of existing MSMEs, so as to expose the women and youths to the rudiments of business start-up through Vocational and Skill Acquisition programmes. "

" This giant initiative has given birth to the Youth and Women Empowerment Programme, among others, following which its slogan, the “Simon Lalong Empowerment Scheme” (SLEMS) was launched on the 9th of March, 2017, in order to attain the afore-mentioned goals and objectives."

" To achieve this noble objective, the SLEMS programme was structured into phases. Under the first phase, over two hundred inputs were donated to the best three graduating participants across the various skills in all 17 Local Government Areas. Altogether, over 3,000 participants were captured. "

" The skills set included Fashion Design, Leather Works, Hair Dressing, Computer, Weaving, and Catering Services. The participants included People Living with Disability (PLWD), Women and Youths. The components of the training included Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy and Skill Acquisition."

" Under Phase Two, on July 13, 2017, the Agency commenced the entrepreneurship development training programme for People Living with Disability and Youths. Over 3,400 participants were captured in the SLEMS 2 program. Similarly, another set of 200 youths were captured and trained under the National Industrial Skills Development Programme (NISDP)."

" This was done in collaboration with the Industrial Training Fund (ITF). The beneficiaries of this initiative are gathered here today and they will be receiving their starter packs. In Phase Three, four thousand five hundred youths will participate in different programs. While some existing MSMEs will receive grants, some will undergo the various skills acquisition training and will be given starter packs at the completion of their training."

"The SLEMS initiative has, indeed, continued to impact positively on the lives of more and more youths and women. For instance, over 2,000 market women and traders were engaged in the Government Enterprise Empowerment Programme (GEEP)."

" This enabled them to access micro credits for their businesses. Another batch of 100 market women and traders were also captured and got access to the Bleneson Micro-Credit Facility. In the not-too-distant future, an additional 2,000 people will benefit from the same facility."

He also said " I am also pleased to announce that the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has in collaboration with PLASMEDA, mobilized over 1,000 Agric Businesses and SMEs  in the state to benefit from the CBN’s Agric, Small and Medium Enterprise Scheme (AGSMEIS) loan facility. The CBN has also in collaboration with PLASMEDA through its Entrepreneurship Development Center, EDC, trained over 700 youths with a view to enhancing and developing their hands-on skills and capacity."

"  PLASMEDA has also trained more than 30 youths under its collaborative program with GIZ through the SME Start-up Loop. The MSME clinic, which was organized in collaboration with the Office of Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, exposed our SMEs to a lot of market opportunities."

" I am proud to announce that a Plateau State SME was recognized and awarded the overall best in the country this year. This was made possible through the immense support and encouragement of PLASMEDA, which culminated in such a giant leap to national recognition. "

" In appreciation of the exploits of Bennie Ventures, the SME which did the state proud during the awards this year, I directed that a house be built by the state government for its owner, Jerry Mallo, while a new car be bought for his father. This gesture is done with a view to encouraging other young entrepreneurs to soar like the eagle and strive for the best with the sky

"let me reiterate my advice to the youths in the state that they should regard the entrepreneurial spirit of Mallo as a challenge to them and borrow a leaf from his exploits. They should also shun vices like serving as political thugs to politicians, taking illicit drugs, kidnapping and other forms of violent crime that would ultimately lead them to self-destruction."

" Let me also admonish the youths to embrace skills acquisition programmes wherever such opportunities come their way. Skills acquisition is a potent weapon to fight the scourge of grinding poverty and unemployment bedeviling the country today. I want to also reiterate that the Rescue Administration, in line with one of its cardinal policy thrusts, will continue to pursue with vigour its policy of youths and women empowerment through skills acquisition. The era of relying on white collar jobs is over, because the current global trend is that self-employment has pushed white-collar jobs to the background and we cannot afford to be left behind."

" This explains why skills acquisition schemes have been introduced in secondary schools and even during the National Youth Service year as a panacea for reducing the over-dependence on government for employment. Government will continue to provide the enabling environment, the necessary support, the encouragement and opportunities for our teeming youths and graduates to discover their potentials, which they can exploit, to become even employers of labour themselves. "

" As a government, we have resolved to make our women and youth empowerment program a continuous one, subject to expansion with a view to increasing the number of beneficiaries. As a matter of fact, but for the embezzling of the N2 billion which was initially remitted to the immediate past administration for the same program, we would have done far better in this mass empowerment scheme."
