Hand pumps provide new lease of life for Plateau rural dwellers

By

Hameed Oyegbade

 Mar 30 2018

“The distance between the stream which is the only source of water supply for the dwellers of Ganawuri community in Riyon Local Government Area of Plateau state is about one hour to and fro, and the villagers, particularly the housewives and children must go there to fetch water at least three times every morning before they could get water to drink, bath and do necessary washing at home.”

The Paramount ruler of the community, the Attah Ateng of Ganawuri District, Chief Yakubu Chaimang stated this while speaking on the plight  of his people comprising  300,000 dwellers in the 900 villages that make up the district. Chaimang told Daily Trust that when the two hand pumps provided by government in the 1980s broke down, the people of Ganawuri relied on the stream for water.

Chaimang lamented that getting water in Ganawuri was serious competition ,and that the water that they were getting has a bad odour and causes sickness. His words: “Majority of our people were diagnosed of waterborne diseases. Our clinics were very busy and doctors said we were getting the disease from the water obtained from the river. One particular day, the number of children in the clinic was more than the number of the children in the school.”

Also, the Community leader of Tse ‘B’ community in Ganawuri district, Mr Nyam Mann also said that water remained the major source of worry in the community, and that people spent valuable time looking for water every day.  “We get water from the river and we know that the water is not clean, but we drink it because we have no option. Anyone that does not want to drink the river water would have to leave this village. And it is not possible for all of us to leave this place. Where do you think we will go? That is why we remain here,” he said.

The situation in Ganawuri was not peculiar to the community. It is the same in most parts  of the country. The 2016/2017 Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey (MICS) conducted by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) indicates that 19 million people in the rural areas in Nigeria walk long distances to collect unsafe water from lakes, streams and rivers. According to 2006 National census, Plateau state has  a population of 3,207,543 and only 45 per cent of households in the state have access to safe water.

According to the MICS report, 90 percent of Nigerians drink contaminated water, while only 10 percent of the people in the country drink good water. The report also indicated that about 40 per cent of households and about 69 million people in Nigeria, do not have access to clean water sources.

As the world International World Water Day was marked on 22nd of March to draw attention to the importance of water and advocating for the provision of clean and potable water, the Chief of Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) with The United Nation’s Children Fund (UNICEF) Mr Zaid Jurji expressed worry that access to safe drinking water remains a challenge to majority of Nigerians, especially those living in the rural areas.

Jurji warned that children without access to safe water are more likely to die in infancy as a result of waterborne diseases. He noted that diarrhoea remains the leading cause of death among children under five years of age in Nigeria. He explained that lack of safe water and sanitation makes children vulnerable to other threats beyond health.

His words “Improving water and sanitation services, as well as basic hygiene practices in Nigeria, calls for a strong commitment from all partners including the government, the civil society, the private sector and communities. For Nigeria to achieve the global goal of providing access to safe water for every citizen by 2030, it needs to make water, together with sanitation and hygiene, a national priority. This goal is closely linked with three key results for the country – good health, environment sustainability and

Plateau United cautions mischief makers......

Plateau united cautions mischief makers

By Golok Nanmwa, Jos

Management of Plateau United football club of Jos has noted with serious concern the activities of some individuals and groups which is negatively affecting the image of the club.

According to a press statement by the media officer of the club, Albert Dakup, such activities if not nibbed in the bud will affect the fortunes of the team both in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and the CAF Confederations Cup for which the club is aspiring for a place in the group stage of the competition.

Dakup explained that these group of individuals who have now constituted themselves as demigods are going about peddling baseless and unfounded rumours of crisis within the team as a result of the club recent two defeats in the league against Go Round FC and FC Ifeanyiubah.

The club wishes to make it categorically clear that the two defeats which had seen the team drop to the 10th position on the league table are also a cause for serious concern to the management of the club.

In the event of the unacceptable performances, the technical crew and players have been told to improve on their recent showings.

These so-called individuals who are now capitalising on the recent unfortunate developments between the club and Mr Mbum Ferdinand to call for a change in the leadership of the team so as to enable them realise their selfish ambitions which will be detrimental to the progress and stability of the team.

The management wishes to use this medium to warn these mischief makers to desist from their nefarious acts as such actions are capable of destabilising the team from attaining its immediate mandate of qualifying for the group stage of the CAF Confederations Cup and returning to the continental spots on the league table.

It is equally noted that the actions of these faceless group of individuals who usually masquerade as football stakeholders on the Plateau have already been condemned by Mr Ferdinand who has disassociated himself from their antics and call for support to the team at this point in time.

The club wishes to make it abundantly clear that to these undesirable elements that no any amount of campaign of calumny will derail the team from achieving their set targets this season.

The management also appealed to the club's teeming fans and the entire people of the state to disregard their antics which is anchored on personal ambition and greed.

It is worthy of note that such actions in the past by these people were part of the reasons why the team struggled to secure promotion to the Premier League as they connived with enemies of the state to deprive Plateau United of gaining promotion to the elite league when they were in the NNL.

We wish to use this opportunity to draw the attention of our teeming fans and the people of the state to disregard any information emanating from such persons as their stock in trade is to distract the team from achieving its set goals and not support the team as they claim.

What Plateau United need now is total and unalloyed support from all irrespective of their parochial interest.

All hands must be on deck to ginger the team to progress to the group stage of the CAF Confederations Cup and be among the top contenders to win the league title back to back.

Plateau group calls on all natives in Bassa to be steadfast and remain committed to the path of peace......

Plateau group calls on all natives in Bassa to be steadfast and remain committed to the path of peace

By Golok Nanmwa,Jos

Group operating under the aegis of Bache Cultural Development Association has lamented the killings in Plateau state and called on the Federal Government to do every thing possible to put an end to the killings .

President of the group Engr Simon Asukuchili made this known while addressing newsmen in Jos.

He said " we want to call on all ethnic nationalities in Bassa Local Government to be steadfast and remain committed to the path of peace. We want to affirm unequivocally that there is no alternative to peace and that no one has monopoly of violence but towing the path of peace and tranquility is vital and non-negotiable."

He said "It is with grave pain and sadness that I address you today compelled by the indiscriminate arrest of six Bache (Rukuba) youths in the wake of the Irigwe-Fulani clash on 14th March, 2018 at Alaintu, Kuban-Iloi and Kawak-ahesek all in Rukuba Chiefdom. We hereby, register our deep-seated heartfelt sympathy to the victims of this clash. We also wish to commend the efforts of the chairperson of Bassa Local Government Council Mrs. Sarah Bali for the measures taken so far towards the restoration of peace in the Local Government.

"On that fateful morning, at about 6.30 a.m., members of this community were woken by sporadic gunshots, naturally, prompting them out of their abodes for inquiry. Unfortunately, within their vicinity, the six youths, namely; Akusu Michael, Monday Awulibi, Enock Akpai Adik, Amil Ajiyah, Adiwu Ugyili and Achigak Ayhu were immediately rounded up by armed soldiers who herded them into a van that delivered them to a cell at the STF office in Jos where they were held incommunicado for over one week until Friday, 23rd March, 2018 when five of them were released except Akusu Michael. It is obvious that Kiche (Rukuba) community remains one of the most peaceful communities in Plateau State. This can be attested by all including members of the 3rd Armoured Division, one of the most strategic military formations the community "hosts."

"It is therefore unfortunate that a peaceful community hosting such a vital military formation would be made to bear the brunt and subjected to all sorts of harassment and intimidation over a clash they have nothing to do with."

"As peace loving community, we view the recent clash between Irigwe and Fulani as unfortunate and regrettable. But it is also unacceptable the indiscriminate arrest and continued detention of our innocent youth who had nothing to do with the clash. Consequently, we are calling on the military authority to immediately release Akusu Michael and tender unreserved apology for their unlawful detention and calm the tension in Kiche community. "

"We are also calling on the military authority to reciprocate our peaceful disposition by touching the lives of their host community positively through social responsibility projects and avoid acts capable of creating disharmony."

"

It is instructive to bring to the notice of military authority that over time, both the Fulani and the Irigwe have shown serial forms of aggression against Bache people, leaving casualties on its trail."

The above statement can be appreciated best from the instances mentioned below.

The Fulani of recent have killed the following Bache:

ASP Ampai Inga, May 2016

Shedrack Agwuila, 20th October, 2016

Stephen John, 21st July, 2016

Pastor John Agbanda Ingmala, 9th March, 2017

Mrs. Jummai Danladi, 10th March, 2016

Shedrack John 8th November, 2015

In like manner, the Irigwe have attacked and killed the following Bache:

Ayhok Ikpiwu, 4th May, 2014

Otile Anah, 5th May, 2014

Ali Adilimil ( beheaded), 5th May, 2014

Shagari Adudu  (beheaded), 6th May, 2014

Ayiku Likita, 28th October, 2014

Musa Adup, 28th October, 2014

Anko Adilimil, 28th October, 2014

Danjuma Atandit Augustine,  May, 2014

Also, Yakubu Achuwun and Augustine Agun Aku were abducted from their farms on 14th October, 2014 by the Irigwe and have never return ever since.

In spite of these acts of provocation, Bache have consistently remained calm and acted maturely to resolve all the issues so as to sustain unity and maintain peaceful co-existence with our neighbours. In this regard, we want to make it categorically clear that our peaceful disposition should not be taken as a sign of weakness.

It is also important to note here that the media, in the course of reportage on the Fulani-Irigwe clash, have distorted and misrepresented facts. For instance, contrary to what was reported in some sections of the media, the Irigwe-Fulani clash on 14th March, 2018 occurred at Alaintu Kuban-Iloi and Kawak-ahesek, all in Kiche land that share boundary with Dong in Jos North and not in Miango district. Rafiki that was being mentioned in some reportage is the name of an NGO in Kuban-Iloi and not a name of a place. The NGO acquired the land from the current paramount ruler of Rukuba and President Bassa Traditional Council, HRH Ati Adamu Adiwu.

At this point, it is imperative to advise members of the Fourth Estate of the Realm to painstakingly verify their stories before going to press.

Rumours have also been going on that Kiche community harbours Fulani militia who have been driven out from other climes. On this, we say it’s not true. Our traditional rulers have been holding constant meetings with the Fulani that have settled among us from time immemorial and agreement reached that visitors and new settlers will not be tolerated. In the light of the above, Kiche community is not harbouring Fulani militia.

Of utmost importance is the fact that government must wake up to its constitutional obligation to protect the lives and property of its citizens to avoid the collapse of this country. In the light of this, we are urging the government to equip and create the enabling environment for security agents to perform their constitutional duties of protecting lives and property.

Furthermore, we believe that with proper intelligence gathering and sharing, most security breaches and crises would be averted and nipped in the bud early enough. Government and security agents must therefore take proactive measures to bring an end to incessant killings across the country.

We are further using this opportunity to remind those in authority of their oaths of office and their duties to the Nigerian state and call on them to initiate actions to address grievances of components of the country.

GOPRI commends Military on robust civil, military relationship....

27th March,2018.

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

Non Governmental Organization known as Global Peace and Life Rescue Initiative, GOPRI has commended the Nigerian Army Chief of Civil-Military Affairs, Major Gen. N. E Angbazo for the visible transformation and innovations experienced in that arm.

The NGO believes this laudable achievement by the military arm has brought about the robust relationship between the military and civil populace all over the country, a sharp departure from what it used to be in the past.

Executive Director Of GOPRI, Amb. Melvin Ejeh stated this yesterday while appraising the civil military relationship across the country. The organisation strongly commended Maj. Gen. Angbazo for his selflessness and committment to service.

“We are so far impressed with the current healthy relationship being enjoyed between the Army and the civilian populace.

“This is surely the way to go in a democratic setting as it would enhance credible flow of information among soldiers and their host communities, thus leading to a reduction in crime.

“Since the appointment of the current Chief of Army staff, the Civil/ Military relationship has tremendously improved and it has even gotten better under the chief of Civil- Military Affairs because of his creativity, professionalism, passion and selfless service.

“We cannot afford a hostile Army around the country, Nigeria. Our appraisal round the country reveals a growing confidence in the it’s Army.

“We thank the chief of Army staff Lt Gen TY Buratai for appointing such a square peg in a square hole and hope that this renewed relationship will bring an end to terrorism and other forms of criminality that’s bedevilling our country.

“We therefore call on all Nigeria’s to ignore insinuation of bias against the Armed Forces as this can never be the true reflection of the Armed Forces, ” Ejeh stated.

Plateau youths replies accusations against Hon Latep Dabang under the Aegies (Grassroot Movement For Good Governance).....

GRASSROOTS MOVEMENT FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE

Rejoinder

Our attention has been drawn to a double publication on the 12-03-2018 by one Timkat Peter and a faceless Janjaweed organization (Concern Citizen for Good Governance) captioned;
Latep, a face of corrupts personality on the plateau,
A local, myopic, baboon & political moron call Latep on the face of plateau politics.

Days have passed and we have not heard him respond to the fallacious and unfounded allegations made against him, it’s certainly due to his character not to give undue relevance to cheap political blackmails, knowing that, truth, no matter how long it takes will reveal itself. We are therefore compelled to write this rejoinder so that his gentle and non-vengeful nature will not opined to giving credence to the false publications
We are not disappointed in your articles as it further exposes your ignorance on basic principles and modules operandi of an administration/public office.
We understand that your publications seek to attack the person and character of Hon LetepDabang (the state APC chairman). A man with quintessential; humility, integrity, of a leader per excellence and also mentor.
Though you ended up with a lot of contradictions, fallacies and unsubstantiated accusations, we will not fail to educate you a bit by depositing the actual and allow your conscience to feed on your ego either to apologies or deceased from being used as a pawn. You said;
Letep is a bunch of criminal and political baboon in plateau state.
Permit us take you back memory lane where Hon. Letep was amongst the 17 signatories that wrote to the merger committee seeking inclusion of plateau state. A great foot that saw to the inclusion of plateau state into APC and whom your boss that you seek to please is a beneficiary. If Hon Letep is inconsequential in the affairs of plateau politics, how comes your oga at the top couldn’t even win any election as an opposition personality that he has been all through the years? Hon Letep has every right as the party chairman to scold any erring member of the party if he so wishes. Let’s get this analogy; if you are a father and you are walking in the market with two of your sons, without any provocation, one assaulted or insulted the other in public, without recourse to the family way of settling disputes or misunderstandings, as a father that you are, will you wait till you get home before you cautioned the other? Certainly No!
Most importantly, the people of plateau state are aware of the sacrifices Hon Letep Dabang made for the success of the party in the last general elections; you can take to the bank and keep.
Letep Dabang, the most corrupt personality in Lalong led administration.
You claimed that Hon Letep collects the sum of #250,000 from each local government as bribe.
To best of our knowledge the only money remitted is 15% deductions from the salaries of all elected and appointees of government from the party, which is paid as dues and it’s according to the constitution of the party. The dues are paid to the party’s account, not an account of any individual not even the chairman. So what other form of collections does the local government pay the chairman? If Hon Letep collects such amount as you claim, he would have preferred elections to hold in the local governments as that will bring in more numbers of persons occupying offices thereby leading to an increase in the purported sum he receives. We hope if you are called upon, you will provide the facts of how these transactions you lied about are carried out?
Letep Dabang collected N100, 000, 000 bribes from Goodluck Jonathan campaign organization.
This is not only laughable, but treacherous for you to make such a lame accusation. We donot think you deserve any intellectual response on this. But, we will like to say that next time, you should be mindful of making such porous statements on media because plateau intellects  have it in records the sacrifices Hon Letep Dabang made, including so many of his brilliant ideas and deep commitment that led to victory of the party (APC) in the 2015 general elections.
Letep Dabang was promised ministerial appointment.
Let’s start by asking you this; it is convenient to say that your master is aggrieved with the captain of the rescue administration in the state because he lost to him in the party primaries of 2014?
It will interest you to you to know that Hon Letep Dabang is a believer in Christ and he ascribes all his attainments as act of destiny. He is never quick in deciding for God what is best for him, and at the appropriate time, all divine plans of God upon his life will surely be fulfilled.  At various instances, Hon Letep has conceded his ambitions to pave way for the aspirations of others, a quality so rare that endear him to so many of his admirers.
The centre can no longer hold.
Letep Dabang, just as any other politician has flair for men whom distinguished themselves and have paid the price for the democracy we all enjoin today, but for the avoidance of doubt, Hon Letep Dabang had move and join APC even before the supposedly claimed mentor of his, so the moving out of his mentor from APC does not in any way strip Hon Letep Dabang of his right of membership of APC as it does contravene his fundamental human right of belonging to any association of his choice. It’s rather unfortunate that your master have NICODEMUSLY being sighted with Sule Lamido, does it also mean that the center can no longer hold for him?

Lastly, when we first read your publications, we thought about advising of not allowing your person(s) to be used as a medium to champion some peoples selfish and senile political agenda, but we are constraint on the hand, realizing that there is press freedom whereby anyone can make statements and comments, however stupid and tenuous they may seem.
We wish you will soon be delivered from your paucity of wisdom.
Long live APC
Long live Plateau State

Sagay backs Danjuma's self defence advice, says law allows Nigerians to defend themselves...

 March 26, 2018

The Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Prof. Itse Sagay, SAN, has backed the advice by a former Minister of Defence and an elder statesman, Lt. Gen. Theophilus Danjuma (rtd.) that Nigerians should defend themselves against killers.

Recall that Danjuma had on Saturday at the convocation of Taraba State University called on Nigerians to use whatever means at their disposal to defend themselves against killers.

Reacting, Sagay told The Nation on Sunday that the law allows Nigerians to defend themselves from being massacred.

He, however, urged the Federal Government to investigate Danjuma’s allegations.

“General Danjuma did not say that the military is incapable. But he accused them of bias and not protecting the people deliberately. That’s a very, very serious accusation.

“And this is coming from such a senior man in Nigeria’s military – probably apart from former General Olusegun Obasanjo and General Yakubu Gowon, he (Dajuma) is the most senior former military officer we have – and he’s a man who has tremendous influence.

“He has held important positions – chief of staff, minister of defence – so, he won’t speak lightly. So, his allegation needs to be investigated.

“If there are elements within the military doing this, then the government has to take immediate steps to deal with them and put people who are responsible and patriotic in the positions.”

Asked whether resorting to self-defence by Nigerians would not result in anarchy, he said: “That’s an interesting point. It’s a point I’ve always made myself. It’s not an illegal measure for Nigerians to defend themselves. If you look at our criminal law, there is the principle of self-defence.

“If someone attacks you, and you feel endangered, and you defend yourself, and in the process you kill the person, the fact that you were defending yourself is a complete defence to any charge. The right already exists.

“So, I think what General Danjuma is saying is that instead of each individual exercising that right, they should begin to exercise it collectively in their communities. I think that’s reasonable too.

“There is breakdown of law and order if you’re in your house and someone comes and kills you. I think there will be less danger of breakdown of law and order if that person knows that the next time he comes to your house, all your neighbours would gather and stop him.

“So, I think it’s worse for people to lie down complacently doing nothing while they’re being massacred,” Sagay said

Plateau United General Manager denies alleged order to abduct JAY FM sports Presenter, Mr Mbum Ferdinand...

25th March ,2018.

Disbelief followed the news that the Plateau United General Manager, Mr. Pius Henwan ordered “his thugs” to abduct a Sports Journalist and Presenter of JAY 101.9 FM, Jos over his comments on a Radio Show on Saturday Evening which prompted *SCORENigeria* to speak to the accused.

Mr. Pius while speaking to *SCORENigeria* was quick to deny the allegations while also clarifying the situation of things as it related to the bonuses due to the players

He told www.scorenigeria.com.ng, “I did not order anyone’s abduction neither was I aware such. Immediately i got wind of what had happened, I made it to the Police Station where we were able to resolve the issue.”

About the allegations levied against him, Mr. Henwan said, “However, I am very embittered by his report as Plateau United are yet to receive the bonuses promised by the government of Plateau State for our achievement in the NPFL last season.”

He continued, “Yes, It is true that the players were not paid bonuses after the win against Etoile de Sahel at the Sani Abacha Stadium and it wasn’t simply because the bonus was based on progressing to the CAF Champions League Group Stage and not just winning the match in question.”

The Sports Administrator appeared disappointed that a professional journalist who could have called him to confirm the allegations went on air with comments that were capable of creating an uproar within the team.

He also promised to get to the root of the event that took place on Saturday where individuals found wanting would face full consequences of their actions.

He said, “In light of Saturday’s unfortunate event, I have set up committee to look into and recommend action moving forward on the actions of the Supporters Club Chairman who led hooligans to abduct Mr Ferdinand. I have reputation to protect so there is no chance I would get myself involved in this sort of mess.”

He concluded by taking responsibility for the actions of the Supporters Clubs Chairman, saying, “I however take full responsibility of the actions and dully apologize  for the actions of the Supporters Club Chairman who has dragged the name of the club in mud.”

Nigerian Government, Army replies T Y Danjuma Allegations of Arm forces being compromise.

The Nigerian government and the Nigerian Army have dismissed allegations by a retired military general that security forces are conniving with deadly attackers across Nigeria, saying such calls are inflammatory and should be disregarded.

Theophilus Danjuma, a former chief of army staff, said on Saturday that Nigerians are being killed at an alarming rate but the armed forces could not curb the bloodshed because they are also involved in it.

“The armed forces are not neutral,” Mr. Danjuma said at the maiden convocation of the Taraba State University in Jalingo, the state capital, on Saturday afternoon. “They collude with the armed bandits to kill people, kill Nigerians.”

The former defence minister said the time is now for Nigerians to rise up and defend themselves from the killings.

Deadly killings have been recorded in several states across Nigeria since January 2018 alone, but the government has appeared helpless at identifying and bringing culprits to book.

Hundreds have been killed in attacks on villages in Benue, Kogi, Adamawa, Zamfara, Kaduna and Mr. Danjuma’s home state of Taraba since January.

The 2018 attacks began in Benue, where about 100 people were murdered across two local government areas on January 1.

Mr. Danjuma said unchecked violence is shifting Nigeria towards Somalia, a country that has been in a state of war since 19991. The East African country is widely seen as a failed state due to the failure of the central government to have any serious control beyond the capital, Mogadishu.

A call to anarchy — Defence Minister
“This is highly uncalled for and is invitation to anarchy and should be disregarded by well-meaning Nigerians,” Tukur Gusau, a spokesperson for the Minister of Defence, Mansur Dan-Ali, said in a statement Saturday night.

“The efforts of the Nigerian military towards restoration of peace, security and order in Nigeria are evidently clear and Nigerians continue to show appreciation for changing the security environment from what it was before,” Mr. Gusau said, describing the statement he was condemning as having been made by an elder statesman, without mentioning Mr. Danjuma by name.

“The armed forces is well organised and highly professional in discharging its constitutional mandate.

“Therefore, if anyone has evidence of wrongdoing or dereliction of duty against our troops (the person) should please bring forward such evidence through the channel for necessary action,” Mr. Gusau, a colonel, added.

He said the military will “not be distracted” by comments like the one that came from Mr. Danjuma.

Comments uncharitable, unfortunate — Nigerian Army
The Nigerian Army also issued a separate statement on Sunday morning, describing Mr. Danjuma’s claims as unfair and sad coming at a time of intense military efforts to address the crisis.

“The public is notified that Nigerian Army personnel have had to pay the supreme price for ensuring the sustenance of security in Taraba State.

“For instance, a gallant non-commission officer of the Nigerian Army was beheaded on 16 March 2018 in Takum Taraba State by criminal elements,” Army spokesperson, Texas Chukwu, said in a statement.

Mr. Chukwu, a brigadier general, said security agencies are facing political attacks because they refused to be partisan in their operation, especially in Taraba State.

“It is noteworthy to state that at the inception” of ‘Exercise Ayem Akpatuma’ or ‘Cat Race’ in Tiv, “the Taraba State Government did not cooperate with the Nigerian Army due to the Army’s stance to remain absolutely neutral in the herdsmen-farmers crisis,” Mr. Chukwu said.

“The Nigerian Army will continue to remain as such.”

Emmanuel Bello, a spokesperson to Governor Darius Ishaku, rejected the Army’s claims, saying allegations are strange.

“We don’t understand the charge that we do not want to cooperate with the military,” Mr. Bello said in a text message to PREMIUM TIMES Sunday morning. “How have we not cooperated? This grave charge has to be expl

Military colluding with Armed bandits - T Y Danjuma

By Magaji Isa Hunkuyi

Defend Yourselves Or Die One By One, He Says

A former minister of defence, Gen TY Danjuma (retired), yesterday accused the Nigerian Armed Forces of aiding attacks by bandits on communities across the country, warning that if such attacks continued, the consequences would make what happened in Somalia a child’s play.

Danjuma, a former Chief of Army Staff, said the military could not be relied upon for the security of the citizenry, advising Nigerians to rise up to defend themselves or risk massacre.

He spoke at the maiden convocation of the Taraba State University in Jalingo where he was conferred with an honorary Doctor of Science degree.

His Taraba home state has recently witnessed attacks and counter-attacks between herders and famers, leading to hundreds of casualties.

While speaking against the violence in the state and other parts of the country, Danjuma said it was time for everyone to rise up and defend themselves.

“The armed forces are not neutral,” he said, adding, “They collude with the armed bandits that kill people, kill Nigerians. They facilitate their movement. They cover them.

“If you are depending on the armed forces to stop the killings, you will die one by one,” he said.

He threatened that violence would result should the killings in his state and other communities in the country continue.

“The ethnic cleansing must stop in Taraba State. It must stop in all the states of Nigeria, otherwise Somalia will be a child’s play. I ask everyone of you to be at alert and defend your country, defend your territory, defend your state. You have nowhere else to go,” he said.

General Danjuma said Taraba was a miniature Nigeria with diverse ethnic and cultural heritage the armed bandits are trying to bring to ruins, warning that people  must rise up to the challenge and resist them.

Earlier, the state governor, Darius Ishaku said the university was a great blessing to the state and appreciated the founders for the initiative.  He said he would continue to support the university. The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Vincent Tenebe disclosed that 5,900 students graduated with various degrees.   General Danjuma donated N100 million to the institution.
