Plateau state To Fully Implement Child Rights Law..Hon Anna Izam..

31st May,2018

Worried by the number of child abuse cases, the Plateau Government has vowed to fully implement provisions of the Child Rights Law passed in 2005 as part of efforts to address the menace.

Anna Izam, the state Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, made this known to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Jos.

Ms Izam noted that children were vulnerable and as such, efficient laws were required to punish their abusers.

“Plateau was one of the first states to domesticate the Child Rights Law; full implementation of it would help us deal decisively with people who maltreat, rape, abduct and traffic children among other offences.

“The law, in addition, does not also allow children to terrorise their parents and other adults in the society.”

Izam said that child protection was critical to every nation’s development and that the state government was committed to creating the enabling environment for children to also access quality and affordable education.

“Education is a major criterion to secure the future of the children and break the shackles of poverty in our society.

“We want to create a safe space for them to develop free from danger, uphold their dignity and not subjected to any form of discrimination as captured by the 2018 children’s day theme entitled `Creating Safe Spaces for Children: Our Collective Responsibility.”

She commended Governor Simon Lalong for making budgetary provisions to cater for the state orphanages and its widowhood centre.

Furthermore, she said that Lalong’s new year donations of food and clothing to vulnerable children was apt and a sign of love.

NAN reports that the Child Rights Law Gazette in 2017 requires the provisions of family courts to ensure speedy prosecution of perpetrators of child abuse and other related offences.

By Golok Nanmwa Jos

Berom groups operating under the aegis of Registered Berom Organizations in Plateau state on Wednesday called on the Federal and state government in the state to investigate the killings in Barkin Ladi ,Bokkos,Bassa and Riyom local government area of Plateau state in order to fish out those responsible for sanction .

They also said over 33,000 thousand Berom women and children are currently displaced as a result of the constant attacks by suspected herdsmen in the state .

Addressing newsmen in Jos on Wednesday Da Iliya Choji Kim the Vice President of Berom Educational and cultural Organization BECO said" in as much as we appreciate the efforts of government at all levels and the sacrifice of the security personnel ,there is still much to be done for normalcy to return ,the numerous internally Displaced Persons IDPs in our mist have never been visited by either NEMA ,or SEMA ,they too need the relief materials that are being given to other IDPs .

He said 'At the inception of the present administration ,in Plateau state ,government did set up a committee to look into the problems between the Berom and Fulani ,which had resulted in the lost of lives ,properties and the burning and sacking of natives from their ancestral lands ,these natives are now squatting with relations and other spirited friends."

"Efforts to get back to rebuild their homes have met with stiff resistance ,as their lands are being occupied by these killer herdsmen ,the report of the committee was  received by government ,which has also set up the Plateau Peace building agency ,the relative peace which has also been enjoyed in the state in the last two and half years was a result of efforts by both the state government ,the security agencies ,and of course the co operation of the various communities .

However in the last few months a serious resurgence of killings ,attacks and wanton destruction of farmlands has been on the increase and the same herdsmen are responsible ,these attacks have not been limited to Berom land alone ,but the Irigwe in Bassa ,and some communities in Bokkos local government have also been on the receiving end ,where over a hundred natives have been killed and farm land destroyed ."

He also said " There was an allegation of the rustling of vows by some persons in Fan and in various discussions with security agents ,elders and the district head agreed for security agents to comb the area in search of the cows ,the combine military and police teams were in Fan for about five days even as local vigilante assisted them ,but up till now no rustled cattle has been traced to Fan ,we want to make this point very clear that in the various meetings we had with our traditional rulers at various levels ,it has been made clear that any act of criminality in whatever form shall not be tolerated and anyone caught in such acts  must be made to face the law accordingly ,'

The state government should not allow the commendable effort they made over two years ago to waste away ,the white paper on the Berom  /Fulani peace and reconciliation committee be released immediately for implementation accordingly and the native villages that are under occupation be vacated for the people to get back to their ancestral homes to carry on their day to day activities .

Corruption Fight Not Ethnic Or Religious -Gov Lalong..

30th May,2018

Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong has defended the present administration’s fight against corruption saying it borders on governance, not ethnic, religious or political leanings.

Lalong said this yesterday in his third year anniversary and democracy day speech titled “Integrity, Accountability and Transparency in Leadership.”

He said though people have the right to hold their opinions, the fight against corruption was solely the mandate of the anti-graft agencies, which have been statutorily empowered by the relevant Acts of the National Assembly to prosecute corrupt practices.

“For the records, by my disposition in life, I do not take any pleasure or gain in witch-hunting anyone as being peddled by those who have chosen, either out of mischief or ignorance, to give an ethnic or political colouration to recent activities of the anti-graft agency in the state,” he said.

Lalong said his administration was pursuing special requests made to the presidency for the dualization of the Abuja-Jos road, synergy and intervention for a major Trauma Services and Centre along the Hawan Kibo area as well as support to the Peace Building Initiatives and Roadmap.

He said that the state would continue to work with the Federal Government to ensure that all Internally Displaced People (IDPs) were resettled in their original places and their security guaranteed.

Plateau To Intensify Operations Against Indiscriminate Refuse Dumps...

30th May,2018.

The Plateau State government has restated its commitment to keep the state clean, environmentally friendly and healthy, as it intensifies efforts against indiscriminate refuse dumping across the state capital as well as other remote communities.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Abdullahi Abbas, stated this at the weekend during the monitoring and evaluation of the private waste disposers working in Jos-Bukuru metropolis.

He said the state government privatized waste evacuation in the state about five months ago, but discovered that the Jos-Bukuru metropolis was still very dirty which, he said, made it necessary for the relevant authorities to “go out and access the performances of the private waste operators.”

Abbas said from the assessment, out of the 14 zones visited, only about half of the private waste operators had performed well, while the remaining left much to be desired.

Reacting to the challenges of sensitization faced by some of the operators, the commissioner said they have done their best, including holding interactive sessions with many organizations, NGO’s and sponsored talk shows on radio stations.

Democracy Day; Dangote To Establish Dairy Farm In Plateau....

29th May,2018

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong

has expressed desire to key into the ranching policy of the Federal Government, even as he is in advance discussion with the Dangote Group of Companies to establish a dairy farm in the state.

Lalong, in a pre-democracy day interaction with journalists at the Press Centre in Jos, explained that in establishing the ranches, his administration would not confiscate anyone’s land as a large expanse of land had already been earmarked in Wase Local Government Area of the state and approved by the Federal Government for the purpose.

He assured the citizens that the planned dairy farm had made it imperative for his administration to put plans in place to renovate and have modern slaughter slabs to ensure a clean environment for the business.

The governor also informed that in the last three years, his administration had spent N22 bilion on the rehabilitation of federal roads across the state and was awaiting the signing of the federal budget for the said money to be refunded as President Muhammadu Buhari had given approval for the refund.

According to him, “we have been sincere in governance. My administration is aware of the challenges in the state, part of which prevented us from conducting the local government election.

“We will not keep postponing election. We are tackling the herders/farmers issues that is why we are opting for ranching policy.

“This does not mean we want to get people’s lands. There is a large portion of land in Wase set aside for the purpose and Federal Government has inspected the place.”

Celeberating Democracy Day; Rt Hon Simon Bako Lalong In The Eyes Of The Plateau.....

29th May,2018..

BY: MPAKA NUMBERE

Plateau State has prided itself as the home of Peace and Tourism for years and consequently answered to this slogan by attracting a lot of industries few years ago. This can be attributed to its fine weather condition and abundance of natural resources coupled with the hospitable nature of her people. The presence of these resources which serve as raw materials for a number of manufactured goods attracted a lot of firms including foreign ones to Plateau State as the state got opened to investors and businessmen in diverse industries.

At a time, the state became the centre of attraction to many who thronged to it to invest, relax and do business. Plateau was among the most peaceful states in Nigeria until things started taking a turn for the worse when several ethno-religious crises, and recently, herdsmen and farmers clashes disrupted the peace of the state thereby leading to the disruption of industrial coherence the state once enjoyed.
For example, the Plateau Highland Bottling Company went moribund in 1992, just 12 years after it was incorporated thereby leading to loss of jobs and its attendant effects on the workers and their dependents including those who are indirectly engaged by such firms. The same can be said of the Bokkos Fertilizer Blending Plant, JIB, Panyam Fish Farm among several others. It is likely that factors such as poor management, political interference, vested interests etc led to the closure of a majority of the state owned firms in Plateau State for many years.
Governor Simon Bako Lalong on assumption of office in May 2015 following massive support in the 2015 general elections, was faced with the responsibility to live up to expectations and put Plateau back on the path of development. Knowing fully well the need for a greater Plateau, Lalong swung into action to redeem his campaign slogan “RESCUE MISSION”
With backlog of salaries, inherited construction projects, inherited loans by the state, moribund industries and dwindling oil revenue leading to reduced allocation from the center, Governor lalong had to put on his thinking cap to make Plateau Great Again.
For Governor Lalong, a laborer should not be denied his wages hence he took up the challenges of paying up inherited workers’ salaries and pension arrears of about 8-12 months, promotion of workers to reinvigorate the state workforce. This gesture endeared him to the hearts of workers in the state earning him the accolade “Governor Alert”.
For investors to be attracted into the state, Governor Lalong saw the need to focus on completing inherited roads that were at various stages of construction like the Mararaban Jama’a-Zaramaganda road, Zaramaganda – Secretariat Junction road that had one lane completed up to NASCO, the Secretariat Junction Fly over that was at about 30-60 percent completion.
Furthermore, His Excellency took to reduce the suffering of residents of the Rantya-Lowcost by timely initiating and completing the Rantya-Lowcost-Miango road which today has given residents relieve and formed an alternative route for commuters.
To decentralize his road construction initiative, Governor Simon Lalong immediately awarded contracts for the construction of (22) Twenty two roads that are simultaneously constructed in the 17 local government areas among which are (Dokan kasuwa-Lardang-Kwa spur, Kurgwi-Doemak, Kwalla-Tim-Doemak spur, Dokan Tofa-Kurgwi, Doemak-Pwaal spur, Kwalla-Kwaar-Doemak, Barkin Kogi-Shargan-Ngoot-tuguut, Mararaba Denshin-Demshin-Shimankar, Shendam-Kalong-Angwan Yargam, Furbor-Naton-Forsun, Angwan Rogo-Angwan Rimi link bridge etc).
Not leaving any stone unturned, his Excellency took up the challenge to work towards making primary, secondary and tertiary education in the state have a facelift, he employed the services of some of the best hands within the education sector like Prof. Mathew Sule, Prof. D.D. Sheni etc to revive primary and tertiary education in the state and to put life to the education sector. Today, the result produced in the state owned tertiary institution (Plateau State University) is a testimony as students for the first time since inception in 2005 were mobilized for the national youth service and almost all of the institution’s courses accredited with various infrastructures put in place for a conducive learning and teaching environment at all levels of academic endeavor.

However, knowing the importance of industrialization to a State like Plateau, its internally generated revenue and its positive impact on the people, Simon Bako Lalong, the executive governor of the state, embarked on a well-thought out plan to tackle the issues militating against the survival and growth of companies in the state.

Also knowing fully well that no investor would want to invest in an atmosphere of rancor, political interference and uncertainty, Lalong tackled headlong those factors that brewed ethno-religious crisis and farmers/herders clashes in the state which led to the establishment of the Plateau Peace Building Agency, first of its kind in the country, to ensure the building and sustenance of peace in the state.
Having stabilized the state, the governor has through the Plateau Investment and Property Development Company (PIPC) which had also gone under until recently revived, resuscitated a number of the hitherto comatose firms among which are the Highland Bottling Company Ltd, Barkin Ladi, Bejafta Fertiliser, Panyam Fish Farm etc.

Through a Public Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, trusted companies were invited to take over the operations of these companies with the government still having some percentage of stakes in them but never interfering with the operations of the companies as carried out by the private investors.

It is the same thing with the fertilizer blending company that is being operated by Bejafta Fertiliser. The fertilizer blending company story is even more significant in that some Indian investors earlier invited by the Lalong administration to come and help resuscitate the company had written off the company as absolutely irredeemable. But in a bid to keep to his campaign promises to the people of the state, Lalong did not give up but gave marching orders to relevant agencies to find indigenous willing and able investors. This is how Bejafta Fertiliser came into the picture. Today, Bejafta has beaten their target of production.

The Panyam Fish farm which is the largest fish farm in Nigeria, is also receiving attention because of the volume and value of fish tended there. This fish farm alone has the capacity to meet the protein needs of north central Nigeria and beyond thereby employing and engaging thousands of people across the zone directly and indirectly.

This farm which had been abandoned for a long time in the past and left to waste is back again, thanks to the governor’s appreciation of its good effect on the state and its people. To ensure that encumbrances are not in the way of potential investors in their bid to acquire lands in the state for their businesses, there was immediate issuance of Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) to land owners without the usual delays and cumbersome procedures associated with such processes in other places.

Today, Plateau State is thriving again, thanks to the vision and determination of the governor who has proven that no stone shall be left unturned in his bid to return the state to its days of glory. And to think that the governor is doing all this despite the meagre resources accruable to the state from the federal allocation shows that he is a man who is focused and determined to bring back smiles to the faces of the people and residents of Plateau. At the rate the Lalong administration plans of industrialization is going, very soon, commercial activities in the state will reach an all-time high and the internally generated revenue of the state will so increase that the state, just like Lagos, might have little or no need for allocations from Abuja.

VOLATA 2019 Heartily Rejoices With The People And Government Of Plateau State On The Occasion Of Democracy Day....

May 29th  of every year In Nigeria affords us the opportunity to celebrate the return of our democracy and reflects on it impacts on the polity as events unfold.

Lest we forget, the resolve to collectively vote out the immediate past administration was born out of patriotism to fill a wide gap they created to promote imposition, divisiveness, gross misconduct, mediocrity, meddlesomeness, purposelessness, mendacity and balkanization of our common patrimony that had categorically mortgaged and condemned the State to financial enslavement. Hundreds of billions were allocated to the State from proceed of oil occasioned by an all time record high oil boom and instead of judicious use of the resources to better our lives and improve our living standard, the monies were siphoned and wickedly embezzled leaving the State at the mercy of untold hardship and a dark cloud of misfortune occasioned by an empty treasury, backlog of unpaid salaries and arrears, abandoned projects yawning for completion across the States whose total contract sums were released and squandered and collateralization of the State's purse to local and foreign debts.

It was amid that looming uncertainty and dwindling fortune that we entrenched, mandated and tasked the Lalong/Tyoden administration through the ballot box in 2015 elections to superintend the affairs of Plateau State with the view to rescue us from the shackles of ruination and extinction.

Exactly three(3) years ago, the Administration was sworn in and took over the baton of Leadership. During the period under review, the performance of the administration has been even. A people friendly and oriented five pillar policy was devised as a workable template to rescue the state back to life and guarantee the citizens a new lease of life.

Most of the projects inherited from the past administration have been completed, some dualized and many new more initiated. A special attention has been given to Agriculture as Government is supporting the sector through distribution of fertilizers at subsidized rate. Only last year, 6, 333 tonnes of fertilizers was distributed to farmers during the last farming season. The engagement of Agricultural Extension workers on ad-hoc basis to render services to our farmers was approved in order to increase better output. Due to this outstanding performance, the FG in collaboration with the AfDB approved the sum N2 billion to promote potato exportation from Plateau and our Governor is made a member of the Presidential Council on Agriculture.

Peace and peaceful coexistence has reclaimed it rightful place courtesy of the newly created peace building agency. All the backlog of salaries the Government owed Civil servants have been settled ditto pension and efforts is geared towards settling backlog of arrears. Contractors have been mobilized back to site and looters of our patrimony have been made to face the music.

Plateau State is now the envy of many states and a safe destination for investment.

With this, we are the best winners and most deserve to celebrate this great day.

Long live our Democracy
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria
Long live Plateau State
Long live Lalong/Tyoden
Long live VOLATA

He stressed that the hoodlums who are perpetrating criminal activities and are responsible to the wanton lost of lives are also bent on discrediting the operations of the task-force, adding that the OPSH which is composed of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria and other security agencies will not join issues with any political, religious or ethnic organisation.

Atolagbe who spoke through a press statement and a copy made available to skynews said that “the continued perpetration of criminal acts has often contributed to instability in the state.

“It is high time these aforementioned organisations separate criminalities from their peaceful and public spirited callings: it is in this light that OPSH needs to put the records straight that our deployment is only targeted at criminals and not against any community or organization.

“All communities and organizations are encouraged to feel free to conduct their daily activities while extending necessary cooperation to the security agencies in order to rid their localities of criminals.

“The OPSH wishes to reiterates it’s readiness to respond to any act of breach of security or criminalilty which is capable of creating insecurity and instability in the state: we would want to reassure members of the general public of its determination to protect lives and properties of all law abiding citizens of the State”, he said.

An Open Letter To The Executive Governor Of Plateau State Rt Hon Bar Simon Bako Lalong On The Deplorable Condition Of Some State Owned Institutions On The Plateau And The Need For Urgent Attention ...

27th May,2018

BY: COMR. DAWAP NELSON DOGARA (MADIBA)

It has become so important to write to you at this moment not forgetting how tight your activities are geared towards the forthcoming General Elections and the bid for contesting the second term. Sir, I write to you this moment with so much apprehension the state of deplorable structures and system of education on some of the state owned tertiary institution, plateau state was known for producing prominent leaders via the educational system and moral building. But currently some of this institution that graduated leaders in the past are left in the state of destruction, no quality structures for learning, lack of quality stationeries to harness learning, lack of quality staffing, lack of good environment for learning to take place effective and many other numerous to mention.
The following state owned institutions need to be work on as fast as possible to enable us regain our name as the best in producing prominent and influential leaders in the country and World at large.

1. College of Agriculture: Established in the year 1998 and located in Garkawa, Mikang LGA of the state, has since creation been a citadel of learning for people all over the Middle Belt Region this is because Plateau State was best in agriculture so it drew the attention of many people to study and gain more knowledge on agriculture. But the level at which the school is now, is something not to write home about, we have good number of Plateau indigenes who are capable of giving quality learning skills to students in that institution but employment has not been open for them to impact into the life’s of interested learners. The structures in the institution need to be renovated for proper learning to take place. Hostel accommodation need to be put in place to leasing hardship to students whom cannot afford paying for accommodation outside the college. Proper and regular supervision should be done by the Ministry of Education Higher.

2. College of Health and Technology: Established 1976 and located in the town of Pankshin LGA of the state, is another institution that has produced a lot of prominent leaders in the state and country, but still residing in the temporary site which looks like a community secondary school. Sir a lot need to be done to harness good learning, since creation the school has not been accredited for proper taking off of some course that will be of important to learners and will also bring glory to the state. I wish the permanent site can receive at least 2-3 structures there to show that we are improving in the educational sector, accreditation should be done for smooth running of the program, and employment should be done to ensure our graduates don’t stay home doing nothing while they can be use to inculcate knowledge to interested learners.
Lastly,

3. College of Art, Science and Technology: Established many years ago and located in Kurgwi, Qua’anpan LGA of the state, use to be the second best institutions in producing IJMB candidates in Nigeria, but the case is different now reason because the system have been shortchange, dilapidated structures, no quality staffing, and other important things that will change the name of the school to its former days of glory. More structures should be put in place for effective learning, employment should be done to. Sir I implore you to do something about this institution for posterity will always remember your good work to the good and loving people of plateau state.

My plea to Mr. Governor and the state government is that the above submission be kindly look into and proper attention be given to them. It is said “a nation cannot survive without education” also “the society cannot survive without job opportunity”. Plateau people deserve the best and am sure in your magnitude planning for a better Plateau, job opportunity will be giving to our unintimidated youths whom are leaders in the making and are also ready to take over the mantle of leadership from where you will stop.
Thanks for lending me your eyes and time to read.

GOD BLESS PLATEAU YOUTHS
GOD BLESS PLATEAU STATE
GOD BLESS NIGERIA
BUILD THE YOUTH, BUILD THE NATION
