Reps To Debate Killings Next week.- Rt Hon Dogara

30th June,2018

Whatever it takes, we have to defeat violence

Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara, has commiserated with the people of Plateau state following the recent wave of violence which engulfed communities in the state which claimed the lives of about 200 people.

Speaking during a condolence visit to the state, Speaker Dogara described the sad occurrence as a collective loss not just to the affected communities and families, but to the country as a whole.

“I know that in difficult moments like this when you're dealing with tragedies that involve collective loss it's always difficult to cope in the sense that in most cases bereavement has been individualized. People tend to deal with the bereavement on individual basis but this is something that involves collective loss, not only to the people of Plateau State, but across Nigeria as a whole. I know that the wounds will still be fresh and deep, because tragedies of this scale leave scars.”

“When events like these happen, the tendency is to ask what the government is doing about it? I had cause to have an interphase with the President, in company of the Senate President, and he has assured that the affected communities will be rebuilt. He has even directed NEMA to take census of what has happened and present the implication to him for approval. He also talked about looking at the security architecture to see what can be done in order to ensure that we do not have a repeat of this type of tragedy.”

He further warned of the grave danger which unchecked violence portends for Nigeria and restated the commitment of the House to working seamlessly with the Executive to combat insecurity, while using legislative tools such as appropriation to ensure adequate funding for security agencies.

“I've always repeated the point that we cannot afford to lose the fight against violence and still maintain our democracy and civilization, it's impossible. Whatever it takes, we have to defeat violence. Because if we do not, we may think now it is affecting only Plateau and some selected states in Nigeria but unfortunately, mayhem like these can lead to chaos on a national scale. It may lead to a scale that may even play out outside the territory known as Nigeria, with international implications. It is therefore our collective responsibility to ensure this doesn't occur again, and if we're determined, we'll be able to stamp it out.

As a leader in the National Assembly, I want to say from the bottom of my heart because of the teeming people who put us in office, that we are willing and ready to work with the security agencies and the Executive to provide whatever is necessarily needed to end this mayhem across Nigeria, wherever it is in the North or South, and to provide support and funding through appropriation to be able to deal with this challenge that is a serious threat to us all.”

The Speaker also called for wider consultations and coordinated efforts to restore peace.

“Working for peace is really not easy; it should involve the government, faith-based organizations, the Church and its builders, leaders from the Islamic faith, community-based organizations and leaders, and if we're finding it difficult, nothing stops us from calling for assistance from the international community in order to deal with this problem.”

Speaking further, he noted that the people of Plateau state are widely acclaimed for being peaceful and urged those who lost loved ones to the violence to not resort to self-help by engaging in retaliatory attacks.

“One thing the people of Plateau have been known for is being peace-loving, as the motto is home of peace and tourism. We shouldn't allow these deep and fresh wounds or scars that the crisis is leaving behind to turn us into what we are not. In most cases when events like these happen, because we're all human, the tendency is for one to seek revenge or retaliate; we shouldn't allow these deep and fresh wounds or scars that the crisis is leaving behind to turn us into what we are not. In most cases when events like these happen, because we're all human, the tendency is for one to seek revenge or retaliate; we should however always look to the future.”

Governor Simon Lalong, in his remarks, thanked members of the National Assembly for their concern regarding the insecurity in the state. He lamented the resurgence of violence following more than three years of uninterrupted peace and pledged the commitment of his administration to restoring harmony.

The speaker in company of members of the House of Representatives paid condolence visit to the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Jacob Gyang Buba  and also visited victims of the violence who are receiving treatment at the Jos University Teaching Hospital.

Full Text Of The Press Conference By The Woman 4 Women,He 4 She Plateau State Chapter...

30th June,2018

WORLD PRESS CONFERENCE BY PLATEAU STATE WOMEN FOR WOMEN AND HE FOR SHE ON THE RECENT KILLINGS ON THE PLATEAU HELD AT THE NUJ PRESS CENTER ON 28 JUNE, 2018.
The Plateau State Women for Women and He for She expresses shock over the recent killings of innocent citizens in the State and commiserates with the government and people of Plateau State over the killings and waste of human lives.
It is disheartening that Plateau State which has enjoyed some form of peace in the last few years has now been thrown into another spate of killings and destruction of properties. Most worrisome to our Movement is that as is usual in any crisis situation, the women and children who are the most vulnerable are the worse hit. This is therefore calling on all stakeholders to come together and find a lasting solution to the problem of insecurity which has bedeviled many parts of our dear country for some time now.
It is worthy of note that no meaningful development can be achieved without peaceful coexistence among the people. In line with this therefore, the Movement sympathizes with all who sustained injuries, lost their loved ones, as well as possessions in the aftermath of the attacks, and appeal that the warring factions/parties should sheathe their swords and embrace dialogue as a means of peaceful resolution to their problems and issues.
The Movement also calls on the Federal Government whose responsibility it is to safeguard the lives of her citizens and ensure peaceful coexistence, to rise to the occasion and take urgent steps to reverse this dangerous trend before we are all consumed by this mindless orgy of killings. Life is sacred and every life matters, so the issue should not be treated with levity and therefore we call on the Federal Government to take urgent steps to secure all parts of Nigeria. This is particularly so now that we are close to an election year and fears are being expressed in some quarters about it being marred by violence.
As part of our contributions to finding a lasting solution to the problem, the Movement will organize a roundtable with both the indigenes and the Fulanis so as to be able to get to the root of the problem. We will also work with the media to ensure all our activities towards a peaceful resolution of the problem is widely publicized so that people from various groups can contribute their quota by bringing ideas on best practices. The Movement will also undertake a walk to Government House and express its stand to government and hold an audience with the Director General of Plateau Peace agency.
We want to thank President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo for visiting Plateau State and sharing in our grief but we demand a total overhaul of the security system in the country as reports from various quarters indicate that the security apparatus in the country has been compromised. We deserve security officers we can trust. We also call on the government that the state owned security outfit, Operation Rainbow, should be well equipped and properly utilized since it has presence in all the 17 Local Government Areas of the State.
We want to also suggest that the Federal Government bring in all retired security personnel who abound in Plateau State and the nation at large, whose wealth of experience can be harnessed, to brainstorm and come up with a template which can be used to mitigate, nip future occurrences in the bud.
We demand that traditional rulers, mai anguwas, ward heads and women representatives (who are always at the receiving end) should be integrated into the Security architecture at all levels of governance.
The Movement as law abiding citizens call for the immediate arrest and prosecution of perpetrators of the violence and purveyors of hate speeches for their inciting speeches which have further aggravated the problem.
In conclusion we call on the peace loving people of Plateau State, who have lived together for years in peace with their neighbours, to remain calm, patient and prayerful, and to put the unfortunate incident behind them and forge ahead.
Thank you all for listening.
Long live Plateau State,
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

A socio-cultural group, Izu-Umunna, has frowned......

A socio-cultural group, Izu-Umunna, has frowned at the arrest of Senator Enyinnaya Harcourt Aberibe, saying that his arrest is viewed as a political witch-hunt.

Even though the Senator was later released on Tuesday and allowed access to his lawyer, Izu-Umunna still frowned at the embarrassment the DSS made him go through, adding that the witch-hunt is as a result of the Senator's bold stands in speaking the truth and criticism of government obnoxious policies.

The group who spoke in a statement and co signed by its President, Dr. Ugo Ihekuna and it's secretary, Barr. Tony Egwuonwu, and a copy made available to our correspondent, said, the refusal of the DSS operatives to allow him access to his lawyers, doctors and family members during the illegal detention further revealed a sinister motive on their part.

"We are inclined to agree with several other commentators that his ordeal is directly linked to his boldness in speaking truth to power and criticism of government obnoxious policies, as we restates our appreciation of Senator Aberibe's quality representation of his Abia South constituency in particular and Ndigbo in general in the upper chamber of National Assembly.

"We also place on record our appreciation for men of goodwill, including the human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, who added their voice in condemning this ignoble act.

"As we approach the 2019 general elections, we appeal to well meaning Nigerians and International Communities to prevail on the government to always tolerate dissenting views in our democracy and direct efforts towards good governance which includes provision of adequate security", the statement reads.

Youth Ambassador Dewan Petitions Over Plateau Killings...

28th June,2018

PETITION ON ETHNIC GENOCIDE AND WIDESPREAD HUMANITARIAN CRISIS IN
JOS, NIGERIA
The Youth Assembly at the United Nations (YAUN) North Central Nigeria Assembly wishes to bring to
your notice of a clandestine and deliberate pogrom of annihilation, genocide and land grabbing by Fulani
herdsmen against the peaceful minority tribes of Plateau State, North Central Nigeria.
This pogrom has been on for more than 10 years in the rural communities of Bokkos, Barkin Ladi, Riyom,
Jos South, and Jos North Local Government Areas, with attendant loss of lives, maiming destruction of
villages and towns, occupation of deserted villages by herdsmen (attackers), etc.
The orgy of violence which has increased geometrically in recent past and seemed to be emboldened by
the Federal Government dismissively referring to it as "clashes"; yet, as proven overtime, it is herdsmen
that have been using disproportionate force to kill innocent and harmless locals, without resistance from
the villagers because they are armless. For instance, on Friday the 22nd of June 2018, the people of
Gasish, Exland, Burdinga, Kura Falls, Kuzen, Nyar, Ruku and Kakuruk villages in Barkin Ladi LGA, as
well Tenti, Daress, Gawarza and Maiyanga villages in Bokkos Local Government Areas witnessed fierce
gun attacks by the Fulani herdsmen.
The attacks which lasted over 24hrs were either aided or allowed by Federal military personnel due to its
sophistication, coordination and lack of prompt response until the attackers have dispersed.
Consequently, over 200 people were killed (106 as claimed by official police report). The death toll is also
increasing several locals escaped with fatal injuries, yet the government forces denied them medical,
security and all humanitarian aid, while they secretly buried the dead.
Those trapped in the villages were specifically forced to bury the corpses as they (securities) allegedly
dumped some into rivers just to conceal the massive destructions caused by the attacks which they aided
by their actions and inactions.
We wish to invoke provisions of the the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights , which strongly
emphasize that All human beings are both free and equal in dignity and rights; everyone has a right to
life, liberty and security of person; All are equal before the law and are entitled without discrimination to
equal protection of the law etc

In view of the above, we wish to make the following prayers:
1. The Nigerian Federal and State Government, all security agencies should be compelled to wade into
this systematic ethnic cleansing by suspected fulani herders in the North Central Region and Plateau
State in particular which is on a daily increase.
2. The international community should in collaboration with YAUN North Central Regional Assembly,
investigate all cases of complacency by security operatives in favour of the herders as reported by the
locals.
3. The Fulani herdsmen should be designated a terrorist organization given the number of people they
have killed - 60,000 since 2001 according to the Global Terrorism Index, which is almost twice the
number of people killed by Boko Haram.
4. We also want to bring to the notice of the President YAUN, UN and other sister international
organizations of the humanitarian crises that have bedeviled these areas affected by unabated killings.
There is a crucial need to provide humanitarian assistance to the affected people in form of food,
clothes, rebuilding of destroyed homes and provisions of temporary shelters. YUAN North Central
region will provide youth as volunteers to distribute relief materials to affected people.
5. That no land, community or village should be ceded to Fulani herdsmen as a result of this sustained
assault over the years. And where such exist, the United Nations and other international organizations
should wade in to ensuring people of these ceded communities are returned to their homes, get
rehabilitated and supported to start life all over again.
Attached to this letter are relevant documents, pictures, news report as facts to support our claims and
petition.
Accept the assurance of the president's best regards.
Yours Faithfully,
For: Dewan Gabriel Kudangbena
