*CALL FOR CALM & RESOLUTE*

September 27,2019

The attention of APC in Plateau State has been drawn to a deliberate misinterpretation of the recent Supreme Court judgement allowing the State Gubernatorial Election Tribunal to make use of the evidence of the PDP and it's candidate in the last election despite the fact that the witness was not listed among those to testify as required by law.

This does not mean any victory to PDP or it's candidate at the Tribunal as some overzealous elements bent on misleading their  supporters are speculating. It only means the statement of that PDP witness will be considered and our lawyers be allowed to cross examine him on his testimony to test it's veracity. So there is no course for any concern.

With this we call on our teaming supporters and good people of Plateau State to remain calm and law abiding as their mandate is still intact and nothing will temper with it by the Grace of God.

We remain confident of victory at the Tribunal which will serve as added tonic for the APC and Lalong administration to continue the good work we have been doing in putting our dear state back on the map of first generation states in the country.

"I have directed the security agencies to deal decisively with any persons or group found to be engaged in crisis mongering and incitement or propagation of fake news or hate speech that can steer people to violence."

Governor Lalong made the assertion during a unity and peace discourse which was organized by the Plateau Peace Building Agency(PPBA).

The event is part of the PPBA week-long activity to commemorate the 2019 International Peace Day which had a theme"Climate Action for Peace: Promoting Healing,Forgiveness and Reconciliation."

According to Governor Simon Lalong who was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the State(SGS), Prof. Danladi Atu said it is common knowledge that our state has in the recent past experienced different episodes of violent conflicts that left us counting our losses.

"We were mired in anxiety as we watched our once peaceful state witness a wave of violence from our cities to rural areas. This is one part of history that left a bitter taste in our mouth and we are thankfully putting it behind us and ensuring it never occurs again.

"To arrest this vicious circle of violence, our administration established Plateau Peace Building Agency to promote the culture of peace and to ensure a harmonious coexistence between the diverse ethno-religious groups in the state.

"Today the PPBA is working closely with several stakeholders at home and abroad to deliver on its mandate of peace promotion through dialogue, education and advocacy. This is not only in line with the policy thrust of our administration on peace, Security and Good Governance but responds to the Agency's Five-Year strategic plan, christened the Plateau state Roadmap to peace." He disclosed.

He also confirmed that various strategies have been adopted in our search for lasting peace,"we however begin to pay attention to issues of transitional justice mechanism such as forgiveness, healing and reconciliation as these are the essential tools to achieving and sustaining lasting peace in our state.

"Inspire of the agony of the past, we can open up a new chapter based on our determination to reverse the legacies of violence. But this we can only achieve when we allow our hearts to heal, forgive and reconcile with one another."He added.

Meanwhile, the Director General of PPBA Mr. Joseph Lengmang charged parents to teach their wards culture of peace not violence, drugs or cultism.

"We need to teach our young people to become a new generation of peace, not violence and not drugs or cultism, a generation that practices compassion and services to others.

"We must show our young people that diversity can be embraced, not ignored, not feared; and that our differences of race, religion, ethnicity and indeed culture can make the tapestry of mankind even more beautiful and even more meaningful.

"This is a time for new and re-dedicated commitment to forgiving the past and moving ahead towards a new future."Lengmang mentioned.

Stop The Violence Before It is Too Late , Chakfem People Warn Mangun Community.....

17th September, 2019

The Chakfem community of Mangu Local Government Area has called on it's neighbour, the Mangun community in the same Local Government Area  to stop the perennial unrestrained violence and acts of criminality it has continued to met against in.

In a press statement issued in Jos by the Chakfem Developement Association and signed by it's Chairman Mr. Celestine Sonso, the group notes that:

1. The origin of this lingering dispute is about farmlands.  Several Court judgments have been passed in favor of Chakfem people. However, these court judgments have constantly been flagrantly flouted and disregarded by the Mangun people. We find their disrespect for the rule of law quite appalling, contemptuous and a violation of our Constitutional and natural rights and constituted authority.

2. The crises has been widening in all its ramifications. These range from blocking our sources of drinking water, encroachment onto our ancestral lands, destruction of crops, vandalization and digging up of public road to physical assault and overt brigandage on the people of Chakfem origin, within and without our immediate territory.

3. The latest crisis in the penultimate week started when a group of people from Chakfem embarked on a road construction to provide access to their farmlands but were harassed and hounded by sporadic gunshots and pelting with stones by the people of Mangun at Shampak, a neighboring Chakfem settlement.

4. An attempt to check the source of the gun shots being fired led to an altercation upon which the neighboring Mangun people took ignoble and crude acts of cutting off  the only motorable access road between Mangun and Chakfem by making it impassable thereby bringing untold hardships on all road users and other law abiding Nigerians using those routes.

5. The Mangun people resorted to physical attacks and molestation of unsuspecting Chakfem travelers and non-Chakfem people passing through the major road as they were harassed, detained and physically assaulted.

Those who attempted to run away were pelted with stones and attacked with other cudgels like cutlasses, sticks etc.

6. About seven motorcycles belonging to our people were vandalized and confiscated as were other valuables such as mobile phones and school certificates/documents.

7. Seven of our people were unlawfully held in captivity and denied access to contact their family members. Their whereabouts are still unknown at the moment.

8. Injuries of various degrees and magnitudes were inflicted on the innocent victims with sticks, stones, other cudgels yet they were denied access to medical care and access to their families.

9. The culprits also unlawfully detained, intimidated and manhandled our Paramount ruler, the District Head of Chakfem, and the Councillor representing Chakfem ward for several hours. This is the height of their provocative and crude acts against the Chakfem people.

10. The culprits/captors responsible for the disappearance of seven captives have left their families and the entire Chakfem District traumatized and in deep pains. As far as we know, none of the kidnappers / captors has been arrested and brought to account for their dastardly acts.

11. They mounted illegal road blocks on all routes leading to and from Chakfem along the Mangun - Gwakshesh - Gullam- Mwar road and the Mangun - Gung - Kung - Wubel / Narohos road.

12. Security agencies were defied by the Mangun people as they refused to abide by their directive to restore freedom of movement. The Mangun people have maintained that their District Head has not directed them to do otherwise.

13. In spite of the open admission by the Mangun suspects, brought before the Mangu DPO in the presence of the two District Heads on the 12th September 2019, that they are responsible for digging up of the public road along the Gullam - Mwar road, no arrests were made neither were theculprits detained, investigated and prosecuted by the Police.

14. It is therefore no wonder that the attacks on our people has heightened unabatedly along both road axis.

15. As we address this Press Conference this morning, our people are still unable to pursue their lawful businesses and activities or enjoy their constitutional rights of freedom of movement, life and association. Our children have been unable to resume at their various schools while those with medical conditions are unable to access medical care.

16. In light of the foregoing, it is pertinent for us to request for the urgent restoration of the Chakfem Police Outpost hitherto closed down for reasons not clear to us.

17. In this respect we must commend the laudable actions of the STF who moved in and prevented further escalation of an already bad situation and saved our people from further attacks, molestations and harassments. We commend the State Government and the Local authority for ensuring that the STF were drafted to the area to avert any escalation and further break down of Law and order or even bloodshed.

The group therefore call on all constituted authorities to build on the good initiative of the STF so as to prevent the situation from snowballing out of control.

It also stated that the on its own part will, in spite of frayed nerves and anger, continue to prevail on the Chakfem people people not to take the law into their hands but allow for the laws of the land to take its course.

The group further issued a warning that no one has the monopoly to violence. Therefore this crude and stone aged approach to conflict resolution adopted by it's neighbors must stop. We must together embrace and tow the path of civility, good neighborliness and the rule of law when there are grievances to be sorted out.
