Recycling Waste: A Viable Alternative To Wealth - Sarah Pam Dagah CEO WilVal Global Resources Ltd...

Recycling Waste: A viable altern

ative to wealth - Sarah Pam Dagah CEO WilVal Global Resources Ltd...

May 30,2020

 Our correspondent gathered this information from a cross section interview by the #JosGirl# where Mrs Sarah shared her experience on how she started;

‘Why I Started’ section of #JosGirl is that section where we celebrate women who are doing great in their chosen ventures while contributing their quota to making Jos-Plateau state a beautiful and fun place.

In this issue of ‘Why I Started’ is Mrs. Sarah Pam-Dagah; the prolific CEO/MD of Wilval Global Resources Ltd., the parent company of Wilval Polythene, Wilval Restaurant, and Wilval Recycling.

Mrs. Sarah has been a source of inspiration for many women (young and old) in and outside of Jos. She inspires hard work and a belief that one can grow and run a global brand even while in Jos.

She has been a practicing entrepreneur for long. Having started by helping her mother buy & sell, at the Jos Main Market, she has also sold grains, clothes and supplied food items to schools and institutions.

We had a quick chat with her to find out why she started Wilval Global Resouces Ltd and found out a number of things:

Wilval Global Resources Ltd had kicked off in Benin; Edo state in 2010 with Wilval Restaurant; a restaurant that services a clientele of elites. According to Mrs. Sarah:

“At the Nigerian Officers Mess 4th, Mechanized Brigade, Benin, I saw myself developing the Mess of the Nigerian Army, supporting them, functioning more than even the officers. This earned me the title of Madam PMC (President Mess Committee), the first to be recognized nationwide by the Nigerian Army. I then thought to myself that if I could pull this kind of crowd to the Mess, then I can put in my energy and my resources, and start something to generate even more income.”

Then in 2013 in Benin, Wilval Polythene was started, manufacturing and supplying polythene bags. And in 2016, she then began Wilval Recycling in Jos.

Why She Started
According to her, Wilval Recycling is the best amongst all her businesses because of its social impact.

She said: “I never knew I was going to be helping the environment. We recycle waste in tons. On a weekly bases, we recycle about 10 tons of waste, and you know what that 10 tons can do on the street.”

Also, she believes in the 3R principle of Reduce, Recycle, and Reuse. A principle that encourages proper waste disposal and management practices. According to her: “waste should always be converted to wealth”.

She advises…
Mrs. Sarah encourages youths to go and start businesses no matter how little, and become useful to themselves and society. And that women should continue to be good keepers of the home irrespective of being business owners or career women.

Democracy Day 2020: Gov Lalong And Governance....

Democracy Day 2020: Gov Lalong And Governance...

29 May,2020

GOLOK NANMWA, Jos

This takes a critical look at governance in the state under Governor Simon Lalong, especially in view of the protracted state of insecurity and its grave implications on peace and socioeconomic activities in Plateau before the present administration came into power.

On assumption of office for his second term, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State vowed that his administration would consolidate on its gains and achievements in the past four years, and also review and fine-tune some of its policy thrust into a “new normal and more result-oriented”.
He immediately after his swearing in for  for his second term told newsmen that  his determination is to move the state away from the civil service perception, through the creation of many economic opportunities that are only found in an industrialised and entrepreneurial environment. He said the idea was to use the development plan to empower the people.
Lalong said he  hoped to consolidate on the  gains and achievements, in the light of increasing demands and development priorities amidst resource challenges. The governor further pledged to finish uncompleted projects initiated by his predecessors and to complete the good works he started in his first tenure. He said that his Policies and programmes of the rescue team, Phase 2” with focus on a three-point policy thrust framework.
The three-point policy, according to the governor while marking the Democracy Day at the Banquet Hall, New Government House in Jos, would focus on peace, security and good governance; Physical infrastructural development and Sustainable economic growth. Lalong explained that his administration has deliberately resolved to review the vision into three policy thrusts from five to enable him focus and concentrate on the limited resources at his disposal in order to achieve more service delivery. He said, “We have carefully woven all the critical sectors of the Plateau economy and society into three-point policy direction to ensure that we lay foundation for sustainable growth and development for the future of our dear state.”

In the second term, the governor promised to ensure the full take-off of the Mobile Police Force Barracks in Gashish, Barikin Ladi LGA and in Longvel, Shendam LGA. The governor also pledged to generate N50 billion per year as internally generated revenue (IGR) in the next four years. He said, “Although we were able to increase our Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) from N6.9billion per annum in 2015 to N12.7billion per annum in 2018, almost 100% increase.

“Yet this level of IGR is grossly inadequate to meet what the Rescue administration needs to fund our recurrent and capital expenditure in the next 4 years. We shall therefore re-invigorate our IGR machinery to ensure that we generate a minimum of N2.5biilion per month or N50billion per annum in the next four years.”

Our Correspondent reports that as Governor Lalong has achieved a lot  since he took over mantle of leadership 5 years ago which includes the  construction of over 270 roads across the state, as well as the completion of inherited infrastructural projects, renovation of hundreds of schools in the state, creation of Small and Medium Scale Agency (PLASMIDA) that has trained thousands of youths on variety of entrepreneurial skills, revival of the moribund State Fertilizer Blending Plant located in Bokkos, which has made fertilizer readily available to farmers and in turn, encouraged many more youths to return to farming which has led to the drastic reduction in the number of idle youths.
Speaking while inspecting his legacy and other projects at Riyom Local Government Area, the governor vowed to leave begin a lasting legacy for the state. Under the Governors Legacy projects, there are 7 Model secondary schools, 6 hospitals, and 8 model primary schools, under construction and spread across the LGA’s of the state.
The legacy projects which are already at advanced stage contractors to put more grease to their elbows to meet the deadline. The governor, who equally spearheaded the renovation and equipping of the Riyom Trauma Hospital which was initiated in 2005, by the former Governor Joshua Dariye led administration in the state and among other projects scattered all over the three senatorial zones in the state  said he would complete projects initiated by his predecessors no matter how long they have been abandoned by past administrations. “I was a government after others but they didn’t complete some of these projects. But I will not allow them to waste because government is about continuity. I will complete the projects started by my predecessors”, Lalong said. The hospital, which has already been completed with equipment installed in the wards, delivery room and theatre among others, is ready for commissioning”. Our correspondent also reports that Plateau state, especially Jos North and South are now very peaceful. Prior to the election of Governor Lalong in 2015 under the platform of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Plateau State was bedeviled with all manners of crises. It could be recalled  that before 2015  several residents living in Plateau  had  relocated  to other states in the country, as several  business owners who felt their investments were no longer safe. But on assumption of office, the governor restored  the dignity and prosperity of the State to what it has all along been known for “the Home of Peace and Tourism”. At the moment, five years after he took over oath of office,  the state has been witnessing a tremendous influx of both people from different works of life and businesses. Also the  tourism sector has received a boost and   efforts and initiatives/approaches adopted by Governor Lalong to restore peace to the state are paying off. Gang Bitrus a citizen of Plateau state from Riyom Local Government of the state commended Governor Lalong for his efforts in restoring peace in the state saying that “there is an unusually high traffic in many parts of the State as a result of the surge in population. Lalong has done well in road construction  and completing of projects inherited by previous administration. I also  commend Lalong  for the installation of streetlight in Jos, the state capital”. He said that almost all  the streets in Jos  including Mango Road Wild Park, Taen Junction to D Medical Junction, Polo Round About to Farin Gada, Jishe Round About to Rantiya Low Cost, Yakubu Gowon way all have streetlights. “See how lasting peace has been restored to Plateau, I commend Governor Lalong and called on him to continue to do more for Plateau. Linda  Ajang, said “As a proactive government, the Lalong Rescue Administration is taking necessary measures to expand existing structures to meet the increasing demand on the lean existing ones to prevent them from being overstretched. Prominent sectors are education, transportation and the health. This is at the heart of the design and implementation of the Governor Simon Lalong Legacy projects initiated across the three senatorial districts of Plateau State”. Remark Ditep, a citizen of Plateau who spoke to our reporter said that ever since Lalong  assumed the mantle of leadership as the Executive Governor of Plateau, he has been up and about to ensure primarily, the restoration of peace on the Plateau. He said that Lalong,s   efforts ultimately culminated into the creation of admirable sustainable peace initiatives, engagement of regular and robust dialogue sessions with the creation and empowerment of the Plateau Peace Building Agency (PPBA) to ensure contact amongst all stakeholders on the importance of peace and unity in the state. Ditep also said that the Lalong-led  government cleared the backlog of inherited salaries of civil servants and eight months of pension to pensioners. It has sustained the payment of workers monthly since then. The government successfully hosted a trade fair after 10 years suspension by successes administration due to civil unrest. The Direct Data capture exercise, Bank Verification Number (BVN) and physical verification of staff were introduced the tackle the problem , also The government recovered looted funds of about N2.7 billion from the State UBEC. Peter Biyal another citizen of Plateau from Shendam Local Government commeded Governor Lalong for his efforts at bettering the lives of Plateau citizens. In his words “immediately after securing his second term mandate, Lalong engaged the famous Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to work on the five year development plan for the state. The State’s development roadmap for the next four years is therefore hinged on a three-pillar vision that revolves around: peace, security and good governance; infrastructural development; and sustainable economic rebirth. As a result of the outbreak of COVID-19, Lalong also  directed all civil servants from Grade Level 12 and below, to remain at home. The state government also  planted Closed-circuit television CCTV cameras at major land  borders in the state to check the entrance of persons to the state. In a related development  Chief Executive Officer of Anista Marketing Ms Bolcit Barshep, has commended the Plateau State Governor, Barrister Simon Lalong for the strict measures taken so far to contain the spread of the dreaded Covid-19. She further commended the  state Government for  planting Closed- circuit television CCTV cameras at major land  borders in the state to check the entrance of persons to the state. According to her  the restriction is to further help curb the spread of the virus in the state and country at large. Barshep noted that the lockdown was the best way to go in order to contain the spread of the pandemic. She commended the governor for providing qualitative leadership to Plateau citizens  at a time the Coronavirus was spreading exponentially across the globe. She said  “So far, the Governor has taken frantic efforts to contain the spread of the virus in the  state. The lockdown and close of borders to restrict movement of persons into the state who may be carriers of the COVID-19 was timely and the governor deserves commendation”. Also Owing to the serious impact of the Corona Virus pandemic on the global economy as well as its effect on Nigerian economy and by extension the Plateau State economy, Lalong also directed the State Economic Advisory Council headed by Chief Ezekiel Gomos, to immediately brainstorm and come up with practical and comprehensive strategies on the sustainability and continuation of the State Economy under COVID-19. He also directed the Council to put together a post-COVID road map for the Plateau State economy especially for its revival and recovery.” Lalong said to achieve this task, the Governor has mandated the Council to liaise and consult extensively with all Ministries, Department and Agencies; Local Government Councils; key  private sector players in the State in the manufacturing, agriculture, banking and finance; hospitality and entertainment; trade and commerce; ICT; mining sector; and other important stakeholders like the MSMEs; the informal sector; Trade Associations; Chambers of Commerce; development partners  NGOS and CSOs, Labour Unions etc. He said that the Council is expected to submit periodic policy and strategic recommendations to the Governor on the State economy under COVID19 and beyond. Jerry Alan another citizen of the state who spoke with our correspondent commended Lalong for procuring  400 tractors for farmers inorder to boost agriculture in the state. Also another aspect the Governor has done well  since assumption of office for  his second term is the rise in the Internally Generated Revenue of the state. Dashe Arlat, the Chairman of the Plateau State Internal Revenue Service (PSIRS),  said that  the service generated over N7.2 billion from January to March 2020. Arlat told newsmen on  in Jos, that the state’s  Internally Generated Revenue(IGR) for the first quarter of 2020 surpassed that of first quarter 2019 which was N3.3 billion. He attributed the feat achieved in revenue generation to various strategies deployed by the service. He listed the stategies to include enhanced data collection, aggressive enforcement of tax laws against defaulters and enforcement in the transport sector in the state.

IPPIS: UniJos senior staff association decries govt insincerity, betrayal of trust

By Golok Nanmwa,Jos

Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), University of Jos Branch, has condemned what it termed the insecurity and lackadaisical attitude of the federal government in the issue of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) which has been causing misunderstanding between University lecturers and the government for months now.

Their position was contained in a press statement signed by the association Chairperson, Comrade Esther Ezeama, and the Secretary, Comrade Anthony Joro.

"The Branch Executives of our association recently met to x-ray happenings as it affects the welfare needs/future of our members and observed with utmost dismay the insincerity and lackadaisical attitude  of Government as well as betrayal of trust to the Union's National Administrative Committee in seeing that it does not confront headlong issues bedeviling members who are working relentlessly to protect Public Universities from being destroyed by the whims and caprices of corrupt Government Officials in the Offices of the Accountant General of the Federation and some persons at the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission who do not mean well for all workers of Nigerian Universities in the name of IPPIS.

"The deliberate delay on prompt  payments of salaries since the advent  of  IPPIS and claims that they observed some irregularities after staff  enrolment,  is a complete ruse. We find this explanation unacceptable. The non-inclusion and outright removal of  some allowances earlier enjoyed by our members such as Hazard, Responsibility, Shift duty, Call Duty and others from our monthly salaries is also painful. These allowances have now been removed from the components of staff salaries without any concrete explanation.

"The non- availability of pay advice as earlier agreed upon to enable members know what formed certain deductions from their salaries. The omission of some member's bank such as,  Access/Diamond Bank, FCMB and Micro Finance Banks, whose salaries are yet to be paid for over two months and still counting has brought unimaginable hardship on our members especially at this trying moment of COVID 19 pandemic.

"Also painful is the forceful implementation of deduction of National Housing Scheme (NHS) without the consensual approval of members negates the Core Principles of Financial Memorandum which requires the consent of salary owners before deductions are carried out on their salaries. While The deployment of a high tax regime without recourse to our right to fair hearing and negotiations is improper," the statement partly read.

It further said the unexplainable NHIS deduction on staff salaries as applied by the IPPIS office is not only worrisome, but contravenes the NHIS ACT of 2005, adding that the lack of third party deductions like Cooperative, Union dues and other Welfare Schemes peculiar to Universities has been eroded completely by the IPPIS structure.

"We therefore reject IPPIS in its entirety and request that as a matter of urgency we should be reverted to GIFMIS, the platform that properly understands and accommodates the peculiarities of our members," it added.

Plateau Generates N7.2B As IGR In First Quarter Of 2020...

Plateau generates N7.2B as IGR in first quarter of 2020

May 28,2020

By Golok Nanmwa,Jos

Plateau State  government has said it has generated a total N 7.2 billion as its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) between January and March 2020.

They further  said that  the amount is the highest ever generated within the first quarter of the year for the past five years.

Addressing newsmen  in Jos the  state capital yesterday, the Chairman Plateau State Internal Revenue Service, Dashe Arlat, said the state government  put it effective and unprecedented strategy in order  to boost the state's IGR and they succeeded.

Arlat noted that with the decline in the price of crude oil due to outbreak of the novel coronavirus pandemic, taxation became the major means of revenue generation.

He said, despite the effect of the pandemic, the service had devised new means of generating revenue from various sectors currently working, such as telecommunication, agriculture, transportation and the health.

The chairman said that the service would not rest on its oars in revenue generation in spite of the global pandemic.

He also revealed that the service had procured hand sanitiser and face masks for distribution to its customers and  indigents people

"

The Service in January to March 2020 rolled out a specific strategy to intensify all Tax assessments in the formal and informal sectors in the Headquarters and zonal offices across the state tagged: 'Operation Show Your Tax Receipts' which was successful in ensuring that over 54% of tax payers in the formal sector and 60% in the Informal sector complied with our assessments and have been making payments as and when due.

"In 2019, the Service discovered that there is a need to carry out aggressive tax audit and investigation to improve state IGR. This strategic direction assisted the Tax Audit and Investigation Department to identify all individuals and organizations to aggressively pursue tax efforts between the year 2019 and 2020.

"Thus, between January and March 2020 alone the Service embarked on aggressive tax audit and investigation of all organizations in and outside Plateau State recording a remarkable recovery of over N3.8 Billion from Federal MDA’s alone.

He added that they have also throw their weight behind the positive measures taken by Governor Simon  Lalong to combat the spread of Corona Virus by reviewing the lockdown days, restriction of movements within and into Plateau State and the deployment of grade level 10-14 to various points across the State.

"The Service is working hard to continuously embark on ways to ensure effective compliance of both individuals, corporations and government agencies which could lead to establishment of huge liabilities of at least N30 Billion," he said.

Voice for the Girl Child Foundation Observes Children’s Day 2020

May 27, 2020

A child is anyone under the age of eighteen (18) years. We understand that below eighteen (18) is a critical period in the development of every human person and that is why as duty bearers in today’s society we are committed to the protection of children’s rights.

As at today, the 27th of May 2020, we record over seven (7) years of social and humanitarian services to children across Nigeria, and we are proud to have played a significant role in the protection of Children’s rights thus far.

Inspite of our success, there are loopholes and challenges that we need to address as rights holders, duty bearers and as a state party to the treaties that legally protect children all over the world.
Such challenges include:
Child labour
Child trafficking
Child abuse
Inadequate parental/ guardian support
Poor education
Poor access to health
Insurgency & terrorism
Crisis

Today, we further reiterate our committment to building safe spaces for children in our communities and to ensure they we do it the right way.

“Just like the NYSC which is partner, we have been trying to see how to keep people away from contracting the virus.
“In view of that many of our personnel have been exposed to lots of danger in the cause of assignment.
“But notwithstanding, that has not stop us from doing the work,” he said.

Plateau State National Assembly Caucus Donates To COVID -19 Fund...

Plateau state National Assembly caucus donates to Covid 19 fund

May 25,2020

 By Golok Nanmwa,Jos

In what could be described as "putting aside political differences" for the progress of Plateau State, members of the National Assembly Caucus from the State were at the Government House, Rayfield in Jos to present their donation to Governor Simon Bako Lalong towards the fight against COVID-19.
The delegation which was led by the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Idris Maje, donated an undisclosed sum of money to the Plateau State COVID-19 Trust Fund so as to assist Government deal with the pandemic.
The Deputy Speaker said the donation was in appreciation of the measures taken by the State Government so far in dealing with the pandemic through several measures.
He said "We have noted with delight some of the major steps you have taken to curtail the disease especially by restricting movements which has done a lot to limit the spread of the pandemic. We have seen you deploy technology in the borders to enforce the movement of people which largely limited importation of the disease".
They asked the Governor to continue his initiatives which are aimed at saving the lives of the people and making sure Corona virus is defeated in Plateau State.

A statement signed by Dr. Simon Macham,Director of Press and  Public Affairs to Governor Lalong who expressed appreciation for the gesture of the National Assembly Plateau Caucus said the donation again shows their patriotism and unity towards the progress of Plateau State.
Lalong said "Your presence here is a show of unity and solidarity for the good of our people. I have keenly followed what you have been doing individually for your constituents and other vulnerable people in the State. Nevertheless, you have deemed it necessary to contribute to the State COVID-19 Trust Fund. We are very grateful".
He used the opportunity to also commend them for putting the interest of Plateau State high on the agenda of the National Assembly which has attracted a lot of goodwill from the Federal Government to the State. He also appreciated them for supporting President Muhammadu Buhari by passing quality legislations for the development of the country.
Lalong also used the opportunity to speak on the profiling and transfer of Almajiri children to their States of origin where he explained that the decision was taken by the entire Northern Governors in order to protect the children who were abandoned and became at risk of contacting COVID-19 and even spreading it.
He said "Although many are trying to politicise the matter, I can assure you that it is the best decision we have taken in the interest of these Almajiri children who for years have been suffering and left at the mercy of the streets. You will recall that the President's wife, Her Excellency Aisha Buhari convened a summit at the Villa which was attended by the President, Sultan, Governors from the North and religious leaders. The decision was to stop the Almajiri system completely and we believe that we have the best chance to do so in order to improve the lives of these children and give them proper education and care".
The Governor therefore appealed to the legislators to continue to support the Government in ensuring that the program succeeds despite the misinformation and improper tagging of economic migrants to the other parts of the country as "Almajiris" which he described as most unfortunate and improper.
The Governor in company of the National Assembly members later took possession of an ambulance, 2 ventilators, 10,000 surgical masks and other accessories donated to the State by NNPC/IPPG initiative.
