COVID-19 Plateau Govt To Go Tough On Defaulters From Tomorrow ....

Covid 19 - Plateau govt to go tough on defaulters from tomorrow

June 28,2020

By Golok Nanmwa,Jos

Plateau state  government has said that  commencing from tomorrow, Monday 29th June 2020, the enforcement teams to curtail the spread of the dreaded Covid 19 virus in the state  will wage a robust action on defaulters .

Secretary to the Government of the state Prof Danladi Atu, who addressed newsmen in Jos in Sunday said that the exercise would commence the enforcement in  6 Local Governments which include Jos North, Jos South, Barkin Ladi, Mangu, Kanam and Kanke.

Atu said that Government  has viewed with dismay the non-compliance with regards to the wearing of face masks, social distancing, hand washing and the use of sanitizers and others outlined earlier.
"We have since commenced enforcement and as you are aware, last week we sealed some places and arrested violators. This was the pilot phase where we measured the impact of our Strategies."

Government has equally been worried about the increase in the number of cases in the State even as we test more people. This means that the risk of COVID-19 is still very high, and as such, we cannot relax."

That is why the Chairman of the Plateau State Covid-19 Task Force, Governor Simon Lalong has directed that we redouble our enforcement efforts across the entire State with SPECIAL EMPHASIS on 6 of the Local Government areas with the highest prevalence of corona virus cases.

Let me remind you that the Governor lifted the total lockdown after widespread consultations with key stakeholders which included: CAN, JNI, Marketers and Traders Association, NURTW, Union of Tricycles Operators, Hotel, Recreational and Catering Services Association, Plateau State Traditional Council, NLC, TUC, NUJ, NBA, NMA, National Association of Nurses and Midwives and other professional Health Workers, PIDAN, NCWS and Plateau Youth Council.

It should be understood that the next phase will see other Local Governments also witnessing the type of enforcement and enlightenment that we shall launch tomorrow.
This enforcement will go simultaneously with public education campaign by Health Educators to further enlighten the citizens on the dangers of the disease and what to do to be protected.

It is important to make it abundantly clear that this action is not in any way aimed at stigmatizing people living in these Local Government Areas or affected communities, but an exercise targeted at ensuring their safety and containment of the pandemic.
. I am stating this upfront because we are aware of the mischief by some individuals and groups who specialize in spreading falsehood and trying to discourage people from abiding to government directives.
We shall remain focused on ensuring that we protect our citizens from the Corona Virus pandemic. All we continue to ask for is the cooperation and support of all citizens towards defeating the disease.

Commissioner for Health in the state, Dr Nimkong Lar ,who also spoke at the occasion said so far the state has conducted  4,076 covid 19 test ,  so far over 3,471 results have been received while 605 results are pending .

He said as of today the state has over 330 confirmed cases of Covid 19 while 8 deaths have been recorded .
Lar said Jos North has the highest number of confirmed cases with 177 ,followed by Jos South with 81  ,other LGA with number of infected persons are Kanam19 cases  ,Kanke13  ,Barkin ladi 12 casea  ,Mangu 10 .

Plateau Group Commends Gov Lalong's Efforts Towards Combating COVID-19..

Plateau  group commends Gov Lalong’s efforts towards combating COVID-19

June 28,2020

By Golok Nanmwa,Jos

Group in Plateau operating  under the aegis of  Labour/CSO Covid-19 Situation room has applauded the Governor Simon Lalong led administration’s robust response to the COVID-19 pandemic in Plateau State.

This was contained in a statement jointly signed by Steve Aluko  and  Paul Jatau the Chairman  and    Secretary of the group and made available to newsmen in Jos .

They  said that The Labour/CSO Covid-19 Situation room on the Plateau appreciates the State Government for the measures taken since the relaxation of the lockdown measures.

The group said it  welcomes the enforcement by government of the safety protocols put in place and encourages it to continue in that regard so as to guarantee the wellbeing of its citizenry.

"We welcome and acknowledge the closure of some institutions that failed to adhere to the protocols and call on government to do even more to bring defaulters to book. More punishment should be meted out on those who refuse to observe and obey the protocols to deter others from doing same"

"Indeed, we are encouraged by the efforts of the State Ministry of information and culture for deploying its enlightenment vans to strategic locations spreading the COVID-19 message. "

The group further said that the situation Room commends as well some institutions who put measures in place and were able to detect and consequently fumigated their premises while testing their staff to curb the spread of the pandemic.

They  encourage government, religious and other corporate institutions to put in place effective mechanisms in place to check, test and arrest further spread of the virus.

"As regards compliance, face masks which were hardly worn before the commencement of the enforcement has witnessed an appreciable increase."

"However, tricycle operators seem to have scant regards for the NCDC protocols as they convey more than the recommended number of passengers who at most times do not even adorn the face masks."

"Indeed, commercial vehicle operators plying township roads scarcely do not obey the social distancing rule nor do they enforce the wearing of face masks."

The Situation Room therefore, calls on government to, as a matter of urgency, set up a specialize task force that would be saddled with the responsibility of enforcing the protocols on a daily basis until there is reduction in the spread of the virus.

This to us will jolt the people out of their lacklustre attitude towards obeying the protocols put in place by the NCDC and government.

They also said that Community leaders should  be engaged to carry messages on the dangers inherent in neglecting the protocols to their various communities.

The Situation Room also encourages  government to motivate those that would be engaged to enforce adherence to the protocols so as to dissuade them from turning blind eyes to those who observe the protocol in breach.

Governmental should also take advantage of the network already established by the National Orientation Agency (NOA) which has offices spread across the nooks and crannies of the country in taking the COVID-19 message to the rural communities.

"With regards to reopening of schools, Government should tow the part of Lagos State Government, which has started working out ways of ensuring the protection of students in the event that schools are reopened. We also suggest government looks at the Ghana model on the reopening of schools at the appropriate time.

"The Situation Room calls on workers and CSO’s to rise to the occasion by leading the enlightenment drive and help curb the danger posed by the pandemic."

The Executive Director NFVCB, Alhaji Adedayo Thomas, who led his team to the destruction site at Masta-Ali in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau on Thursday, said that the exercise was aimed at riding the state and the nation of the unfortunate large volume of uncensored, unclassified, pirated and pornographic materials.

Adebayo explained that the destruction exercise would serve as a deterrent to perpetrators of the heirnous act adding, “NFVCB has zero tolerance for such Uncensored and pirated materials.”

The Director said that the board was totally out to protect the young ones from unsuitable content and also to promote and preserve Nigeria’s ethnic and religious harmony by censoring and classifying video works to ensure that they are in line with our societal norms.

“As a board, we wouldn’t relent in our effort of ensuring that the state and the nation is free from unwholesome materials, ” he assured.

Gov Lalong's One Year Achievement In It's Second Tenure ,PICTDA Lists....

June 26,2020

Plateau Information and Communication Technology Development Agency (PICTDA) has listed some high-points of Governor Simon Bako Lalong’s achievements one year into the second tenure of a four-year term. They include technology skill building targeting young people through the Code Plateau Initiative; and the Plateau Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Policy and Strategic Plan designed to drive the state’s vision at improving quality of life across sectors using ICT.
According to the Director General of  PICTDA, Daser David, in a virtual interview with IT Edge News, Governor Lalong has provided rare leadership in helping to drive the frameworks for ICT human capacity building and policy awareness as well as adoption of technology across key sectors that drive the state.

“There is a gradual institutional acceptance of ICT in all public ministries, departments and agencies (MDAs) as a way of improving governance, quality of lives and delivery of services to citizens with the governor as the prime mover of this change,” said David to IT Edge News.

His words: “Under the guidance and support of Governor Simon Lalong in the first year of his second tenure, one of his achievements would be support of his administration for the Code Plateau Initiative through which PICTDA was aided at building tech skills in young people to be part of not just Nigeria but the global digital economy. The agency recorded a success rate in turn-up and certified participants at the end of the training.

“[Also is] the e-Government policies of the “Rescue Administration” which set a template to drive speed, efficiency, and save costs in the delivery of government services to the citizens.”

The Code Plateau Initiative is part of a larger framework for digital inclusion and skill-building within the Silicon Plateau agenda by Lalong to rework the state’s economy and leverage global IT opportunities.

While the COVID-19 pandemic has brought a lot of challenges, it has also deepened the reliance on technology and a wider appreciation of ICT roles in impacting meaningful changes, David stressed.

“The presence of COVID-19 did indeed create innovative challenges and distorted a lot of the initial plans set for the year. Never-the-less, our focus for the remaining months is strictly on integration of governments and digital services. We have automations ongoing that have already been deployed months ago, each automation is currently working in “file loads” but we’re heading towards integration of MDAs to enable data sharing and also what we call a ‘Whole of Government,” said David to IT Edge News.

“The state also became at the forefront of technology implementation and deployment. First with the utilization of CCTV cameras to monitor and police the borders through tech aided surveillances. We were the first state in Nigeria to have used an online platform to issue movement permit during the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown.”

David admitted there are headwinds. But as the ICT clearinghouse for Plateau State, the agency’s role in public procurement, digitalising of all government processes and compliances with standard national IT procedures have enjoyed continuous support from Governor Lalong.

Change is difficult to implement, said the PICTDA’s boss but the “Rescue Administration” of Governor Lalong has continuously responded to putting the state ahead particularly aa it concerns national ICT policies. The state is one of the few states that has signed for zero charges on right of way (RoW) to enable ICT companies rollout services that will benefit citizens without hindrances.

Also, Plateau is one of leading states in terms of compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR), 2019 – a national data protection guideline for all public and private entities engaging citizens data in Nigeria.

“We are fully on board with the policies and regulations of NDPR. Our revenue board is already undergoing the audit; our ministry of finance and ministry of lands are on queue to meet up compliance with the data regulation.

“We do take it serious and ensure all departments are in compliance with the federal government directives on data protection. We are working to make sure that every organisation in the state complies with this FG directive.

Group In Plateau Demands Gov Lalong To Make Reversal On PLASU Teaching Hospital Location...

Group In Plateau Demand Gov Lalong To Make Reversal On PLASU  Teaching Hospital Location...

June 26,2020

Democracy is said to be the government of the people by the people and for the people. It seems this definition of democracy is true for all local government in Plateau State except Bokkos LGA.

The people of Bokkos LGA have remained supportive to all successive government in Plateau State since 1999. The current government led by Rt. Hon Barr Simon Bako Lalong enjoyed the votes and support of Bokkos people since 2015 till date. However, Bokkos LGA seems to be short changed by the current government.

In several aspects, the last of which is the recent plan by the government to locate the Teaching Hospital of the Medical College of the Plateau state University in shendam,The Governor’s LGA.

To put it straight, the people of Bokkos feel betrayed and abandoned by the current Government despite the immense Goodwill it garnered from the bokkos people.

The whole world bears us witness that the Lalong legacy projects initiated by the current government are already at advanced stages of development in all other LGA’s in plateau State except Bokkos LGA. Till date, there is no single block to register the presence of legacy project in Bokkos.

This only leave us to wonder whether the people of Bokkos are not part of Plateau or may be for some reason(s) we do not deserve to enjoy the good will of this government.

As a group of advocates for the interests of Bokkos people, we want to register our dissatisfaction And caution that this deliberate show of bad faith against the good people of Bokkos is against the principle of thinking Plateau and acting Plateau.

Another brazen exhibition of ingratitude to the people of Bokkos is the lukewarm attitude of the governor towards the security of the Bokkos people.

Aside the unabated attacks from herders on the people of Bokkos which have claimed so many lives, we are still left to battle with kidnapping, Armed Robbery, Rape and so on.

It is on record that despite the various attacks and insecurity in Bokkos LGA where in lives and property were lost, the governor is yet to visit and pay condolence to the people of Bokkos. On Kwatas, over 23 people were killed in one night. The governor abandoned us in our grief and sorrow and went for a traditional ceremony in Shendam, as he failed to visit even for the mass burial of these sons and daughters of Bokkos. We are aware that the Government has visited other LGA who suffered such attacks even when the casualties of such attacks were less in number. How else should we interpret this conduct of the government rather than to believe that the Governor has no interest in reciprocating love and support showered to this Government by the people of Bokkos LGA.

We are by this statement, drawing the Governor’s attention by way of a protest against the planned siting of the Plateau State University Teaching Hospital in Shendam LGA. We find this plan repugnant to common sense and politically suicidal. Our reasons for coming to the above conclusions are not far-fetched.

Your Excellency would find that as it stands, there is no fully functional hospital in the whole of Bokkos LGA. The Cottage hospital in Bokkos is still uncompleted and grossly understaffed. Bokkos people are left at the mercy of few private clinics or they have to travel all the way to Barkin Ladi LGA when confronted with medical issues a little more serious than Malaria. One will think that it is communities like that that the Government should consider fit to host a teaching hospital of a university which they already host. By the way, the communities hosting the University donated their respective lands upon which the university is situate without being compensated. The siting of the Hospital around the university would have been a sign of gratitude to the people of Bokkos for the sacrifice of their lands.

We also believe this medium is appropriate to draw the government’s attention to the fact that even the statutory requirement for the employment of staff from grade levels 1-7 to be exclusively for the host community is not being met. The host community for the university is also being shortchanged in this regard.

So far, we have demonstrated above some of the issues which has aroused the suspicion of the people of Bokkos against the current government. We as a people are willing to work with and support government of Rt. Hon. Barr. Simon Bako Lalong and we believe it will not be too much to ask for the Government to reciprocate this love. We understand that the Governor needs to satisfy his own people too in Shendam with some projects. Regardless of the Legacy project already cited in Shendam and the Government Hospital which is a lot better than that of Bokkos, we urge and plead with the Governor to allow the Teaching Hospital of the Plateau State University to be cited in Bokkos if not for proximity sake, but for the sake of the fact that Bokkos needs more than anything else, a standard hospital to cater for the medical needs of its People Plateau.

This is the modest demand of our people and we pray that government like a parent listens and grants the wishes of its people in Bokkos LGA.
