Gov Lalong Secures Licence For Rapid Enrollment Of Plateau Citizens To National Database..

 January 24,2021

GOVERNOR LALONG SECURES LICENCE FOR RAPID ENROLMENT OF PLATEAU CITIZENS TO NATIONAL DATABASE.

Following the challenges faced by citizens of Plateau State in enrolling for the National Identity Number (NIN) as a result of few enrolment centres, Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong has secured the licensing of Plateau State as a service provider for the enrolment of Nigerians residing in the State.

The approval which was conveyed to the Governor by the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy through the Director General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engr. Aliyu Aziz, indicates that the Plateau State Government can now participate in the registration of citizens of the State into the national identity database in line with the provisions of the NIMC Act and other guidelines issued.

Reacting to the development, Governor Lalong said he was excited that the State secured the approval which will not only reduce the hardship faced by citizens in obtaining the NIN number due to the few centres available in the State, but will also help the State ensure that all its citizens are captured into the national identity ecosystem.

The Governor said “now that Plateau State has been granted the licence to provide data capture and enrolment services for the issuance of the National Identity Number, we are going to ensure that we create centres in all the 17 Local Government Areas and other strategic towns in order to ensure seamless, quick and efficient enrollment of all our citizens and other Nigerians residing in the State”.

He therefore directed the Commissioner for Science and Technology to immediately work with the Plateau State Information & Communication Technology Development Agency (PICTDA) to further liaise with NIMC towards finalizing arrangements and acquiring the necessary equipment for the successful implementation of the programme.

Lalong also mandated them to ensure that arrangement for suitable facilities are made and training of requisite manpower is done in record time in order to guarantee excellence enrollment of eligible persons within the State into the Nigerian Digital Ecosystem.

Governor Lalong therefore uses the opportunity to appeal to the citizens of Plateau State to exercise more patience while the process in completed and the facilities put on ground for the commencement of the enrollment services throughout the State. He also wants them to cooperate with the officials during the exercise and provide accurate data to avoid complications afterwards.

The licence granted to Plateau State is for one year and is subject to renewal upon satisfactory performance during the period.

Plateau - We would not tolerate killings of innocent persons  , criminality -  Gov Lalong

January 13,2021

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

Plateau State Governor  Simon Lalong on  Wednesday said his adminstration  do not want to hear of any incidence of “unknown gunmen” terrorizing its people any longer .

He further said that his adminstration is collaborating  with the security agencies to ensure that lasting peace is  achieved  in state .

Lalong also said that we are aware of the recent alert by the Department of State Services of a threat to cause inter-religious violence by some criminal elements.

" We have to take this alert seriously and ensure that we report any suspicious activity to the security agencies. I also advise our people not to succumb to the divisive antics of such elements who exploit the fault lines of religion, ethnicity, politics and other sectional interests to create chaos."

The Governor made this known while speaking at a stakeholders meeting he  convened in Jos .

He said that we  cannot do it alone. Now that we have community policing constables, we expect better security as we all support them to work.

"My adminstration would continue to pay attention to the security of lives and property by adopting various measures to foster peaceful coexistence and also deal with crime and criminality.

" I am aware of the incidences of kidnapping, cultism and other violent crimes in some parts of Plateau State. The Government is working hard with the security agencies and stakeholders to ensure that the ugly incidences are tackled. "

" Last month, I signed the Anti-kidnapping, Land grabbing, Cultism and Violence-related matters bill passed by the State House of Assembly into law. By that law, anyone convicted of kidnapping in Plateau State will be sentenced to death while cultism and other violent crimes attract various terms of imprisonment. "

"Also in December last year, we inaugurated 595 Community Police constables who were trained and deployed to the 17 Local Government Areas to assist law enforcement agencies, particularly the police in intelligence gathering and other security operations. Now that it has taken off, I expect to hear from you how best we can domesticate and own the initiative at the grassroots. "

Lalong also said that "Because security is a collective responsibility, I charge you to assist the Government sensitise and mobilise all citizens to always be security conscious and take measures to protect their vicinity against criminals. Apart from exposing them, they should also embrace techniques to provide the first line of alarm and defence before security agencies respond.

I Am Not Holding Local Govt Salaries- Lalong..

I am  not holding Local Govt salaries  – Lalong

January 13,2021

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong  on Wednesday  said  that he is not withholding the salaries of Local Government workers as such they have no right to call him names .

Lalong made this known while speaking at   an engagement with Plateau state stakeholders on the second wave of covid-19 and security issues held in Jos the Plateau state capital .

Lalong while speaking said "I will be the last person to frustrate the implementation of the new minimum wage to Local Government employees having been one of the first and few Governors to agree on its implementation.

"Besides, I was part of the negotiation at the Federal level after which other tiers of Government were advised to go and negotiate with their employees.

Following the prolonged clamor for financial autonomy of the Local Government system nationwide, the matter was finally resolved. As a result, I approved that Local Government autonomy in Plateau State should be implemented immediately.

He said that  all funds belonging to the third tier of Government go straight to them. It is therefore the duty of the Local Governments to negotiate the new minimum wage with their employees based on their capacity to pay. This is the same thing that happened at the Federal and State levels.

I was therefore shocked that despite my intervention to ensure that the matter was quickly resolved through a Technical Committee, the workers embarked on protests which caused hardship to other citizens. They have also called me unprintable names forgetting that I have a soft spot for workers.

I do not need to repeat what I inherited as their salary arrears for 8 months, unpaid “no-work-no pay”, promotions of over 20 years, among others when I took over. All these they seem to have forgotten because of politics.

Gov Lalong Gov Lalong lament Increase In COVID-19 Related Deaths In Plateau ...

Gov Lalong Lament increase in COVID 19 related deaths in Plateau ..

January 13,2021..

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

Plateau State Governor  Simon Lalong on  Wednesday lamented the  increase in COVID 19 related deaths in Plateau .

He also decried the non-compliance of the laid down protocols

aimed at  curbing the spread of  COVID-19 in the state .

The Governor made this known while speaking at a stakeholders meeting he  convened in Jos .

He said  "As you may be aware, we are experiencing the second wave of the corona virus pandemic where there is a resurgence of cases across the nation including here on the Plateau."

In his words Sadly in Plateau ,we are also recording increasing number of deaths that is very worrisome. In the past weeks, we have seen some prominent persons in Plateau State and indeed across Nigeria die from COVID-19."

Lalong  further said that the state  is  recording more daily cases in the State than previously.

He said that " i have invited you here again for us to rub minds on very important issues that border on the security and well-being of our people,

. The most worrisome point here is that despite this situation,  most citizens appear to be careless and reluctant to observe the COVID-19 protocols. In fact, many have abandoned and refused to observe simple protocols of wearing face masks, maintaining social distance and washing hands regularly.

This worries me a lot because this recklessness is further exposing more people to the virus and then increasing the casualty figures. While we have no intention of imposing another lockdown to avoid further damage to the economy, some members of the public are not helping us.

But I hope everyone knows that as a government, we cannot fold our arms to witness people dying over a situation that is largely preventable.

" I hope we shall see a change of attitude going forward as we resume more vigorous level of enforcement of all the protocols.

Lalong further said that For those who are in denial and continue to misinform others that COVID-19 does not exist, I want to warn them to desist. I as the number one citizen of the State was a victim and God helped me to come out of it. I can tell you that it is not a joke and I do not wish even my enemies such experience."

That is why at the last State EXCO meeting, we decided to criminalize further denial of the disease in the State. In other words, if you deny the existence of the disease, keep your denial to yourself because if you are caught propagating it or instigating others to follow you, you will be arrested and prosecuted no matter how highly placed you might be.

Again, we have to re-strategize and embark on more education and sensitization particularly at the grassroots. The previous approach where we talk to stakeholders and expect them to take the message down seems to be less effective at the moment. Therefore, we are taking the message by directly engaging the people.

I have directed that my Commissioners and other senior government officials go down and engage the people henceforth. We want to break the resistance and ensure that the people own the response. COVID-19 is a personal matter that affects people directly. They need to be involved.

On the issue of vaccine, I have already heard some people peddling conspiracy theories. I want to say that I will be the first to take the vaccine whenever it is available in Plateau State. Let us be careful of promoting unsubstantiated rumors.

By the way, we are still hopeful that the drugs being developed by the Plateau State Medical Research Team which are currently undergoing clinical examination will pass the necessary approvals. This will also give us another option for prevention and treatment. At least, this is our own initiative and there is no conspiracy theory attached

Plateau: OPSH Denies Killing 2 Youths In Riyom..

Plateau: OPSH denies killing 2 youths in Riyom

*Says allegation baseless, intended to discredit the outfit.

January 12,2021

Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), an internal military task force in Plateau State, has denied the report linking it to the death of two youths in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The youths identified as Jerry Bitrus, 28, and Joseph Davou, 32, respectively, were reportedly killed last Sunday, by gunmen in the area.

A media report had quoted locals accusing personnel of OPSH of complicity in the act which has drawn condemnations from citizens and politicians alike in the state.

But reacting to the allegation, the military outfit insisted that it has nothing to do with the  death of the youths, explaining that rather, its personnel on patrol were drafted to the area on receipt of a distress call about the incident.

To this end, it has advised the general public to disregard the allegation which it described as baseless in its entirety.

The OPSH, while exonerating itself of the development, accused some mischievous persons from the area of trying to discredit the military outfit.

In the response contained in a statement, titled:"Re:Condemnations Trail Killing of Two Youths in Riyom By Gunmen ",signed by its Media Officer, Major Ibrahim Shittu, the OPSH maintained that:"These concocted lies were intended by the authors to set the public, especially citizens of the state against OPSH which has worked assiduously with other stakeholders to ensure peace and security in the state especially during the Yuletide season despite several threats of attacks.

The statement read in full:"The attention of the Operation SAFE HAVEN (OPSH) has been drawn to a report on news  medium, alleging killing of two youths by gunmen in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State.

"The report which claimed that more facts have emerged on how the gunmen killed the two young men on Sunday around 7.09pm, quoted some locals accusing men of Operation Safe Haven of been responsible for the attack  and killing of the victims, identified as Jerry Bitrus, 28, and Joseph Davou, 32, respectively.

"Having gone through this report and allegations made, we wish to dissociate our men from this act in its entirety.                                      This allegation is not only false, mischievous and baseless but also aimed at discrediting the operation.

"These concocted lies were intended by the authors to set the public, especially citizens of the state against OPSH which has worked with other stakeholders to ensure peace and security in the state.

"To set the records straight, we wish to state that on Sunday,January 10,2021, the Commander Sector 6 of Riyom General Area was called by the youth leader of Ghoss to inform him that two (2) persons were shot by unknown gunmen. Following the information, he swiftly mobilized his troops in conjunction with the Police Riyom Division to the scene. On their arrival, they met the two victims who were incapacitated and bleeding profusely. A close examination by the team showed that one was already dead while the other one was evacuated to K Vom Christian Hospital in company of some youths;  unfortunately, he later gave up the ghost.

It is pertinent to state that the Riyom Police Division in the area were duly informed of the development and they recovered the corpses of the victims.

"The Member of the Plateau State House of Assembly representing Riyom Constituency, Hon Timothy Datong, having heard of the development, called the Commander Sector 6 where the incident happened and he was briefed accordingly.

"It is however sad that  some mischievous persons are accusing personnel of OPSH of the killings.

" You will recall that based on the threats to that general area during the Yuletide season, OPSH increased its deployment which served as deterrence to those planning to attack the area.

" Troops have also continued to maintain security even after the New Year celebrations. This was appreciated

A statement signed  Simon Macham

Prof. Ujah who has spent many years in Plateau State teaching and practicing medicine said the Rescue of Administration of Governor Simon Lalong has done what is unique by not only focusing on healthcare infrastructure, but developing manpower.

He said “We are very excited that you recently approved the employment of over 40 doctors and many other health personnel to boost the manpower of the sector. This is inspite of the economic situation of the country and the State. It is also on record that your administration has procured medical equipment for health facilities across the State and ensured that the Plateau Contributory Health Insurance Scheme and the Plateau Primary Healthcare Development Agency were established. This demonstrates your passion for healthcare delivery. We commend you and ask that you do more”.

Prof. Ujah also appealed to the Governor to look into other areas such as the implementation of the CONMESS which is at 83 percent at the moment. He also solicited the support of the Government towards the development of the National NMA Headquarters in Abuja as well as the training of more medical doctors from Plateau State to fill the gap that has continued to widen with the exodus of doctors from the country.

Governor Lalong while responding said he was delighted to have the NMA visit him under the leadership of Prof. Ujah who though originally from Benue State, is now the son of Plateau as he has spent most part of his professional life in the State.

He congratulated the NMA leadership and assured them that the Rescue Administration was committed to providing qualitative and affordable healthcare to the citizens particularly at the grassroots level.

Governor Lalong disclosed that apart from ensuring that health takes priority in the Lalong Legacy project, his administration also ensured that the abandoned hospitals in Riyom, Mabudi and Kanke and others are completed so as to give the people more access to healthcare.

The Governor further explained that his administration also worked for the establishment of the Faculty of health sciences at the Plateau State University Bokkos as a way of ensuring that more health personnel are trained to increase manpower. He disclosed that the construction of the new faculty has gone far as the teaching hospital is also being constructed in Shendam.

Lalong appreciated the medical professionals for sacrificing themselves in the fight against COVID-19 which has seen some of them infected and others losing their lives. A minute silence was observed for those who lost their lives, even as he again called for more sensitization among members of the public advising them to take precaution in the face of the second wave of the pandemic.

He assured them that the State Government was doing everything possible to ensure that the Plateau Health Research team led by Prof. Noel Wannang comes up with home grown solution to COVID-19 and other diseases. The three drugs developed by the team he said have passed pre-clinical stage and undergoing clinical trials before approval by relevant authorities.

The Governor also invited the doctors to invest in the State by establishing medical services as the State if focusing on becoming Nigeria’s headquarters for medical tourism giving its unique weather and hospitality.

Plateau - Anyone convicted of kidnapping   will be sentenced to death - Lalong

January 10,2021

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

Plateau state Governor Simon Lalong on Sunday said his adminstration would

continue to pay attention to the security of lives and property by adopting various measures to foster peaceful coexistence and also deal with crime and criminality.

Lalong made this known while speaking at the 2021 Armed  Forces  Remembrance day  church service held at the COCIN headquarters  church in Jos .

"I am aware of the incidences of kidnapping, cultism and other violent crimes in some parts of Plateau State. The Government is working hard with the security agencies and stakeholders to ensure that the ugly incidences are tackled. "

Last month, I signed the Anti-kidnapping, Land grabbing, Cultism and Violence-related matters bill passed by the State House of Assembly into law. By that law, anyone convicted of kidnapping in Plateau State will be sentenced to death while cultism and other violent crimes attract various terms of imprisonment.

The Governor who said that he  remains  a firm believer in Community Policing stressed that he is  convinced  this can enable the state to  tackle the challenges of insecurity in Nigeria more effectively.

"We have to be proactive in preventing crimes through intelligence gathering and ensuring rapid response to any distress."

In his words " This is why even before the Federal Government decided to implement the Community Policing Initiative, we engaged stakeholders in the State towards strengthening our Operation Rainbow to provide grassroots policing. "

He said that" In December last year, we inaugurated 595 Community Police constables who were trained and deployed to the 17 Local Government Areas to assist law enforcement agencies, particularly the police in intelligence gathering and other security operations. "

" Since security is everybody's business, I appeal to all citizens to always be security conscious and participate in protecting themselves against criminals before security agencies respond to their distress calls. Let us not live care-free and expect the security personnel to do everything. "

Lalong further said that "The security agencies as we all know have challenges of manpower, logistics and equipment as well as training which most times delay their response and effectiveness. We need to join hands with them by doing our part and also passing accurate and timely information to them."

He called on the people of the state to support security agencies at all times .

"Rather than use the bad conduct of a few to condemn all of them, let us isolate the bad ones and ensure that they are removed. We cannot afford to demoralize our gallant men and women at this time of insecurity in our country. We saw what happened during the ENSARS protests when they came under attack physically and morally. "

He further said " On the issue of our brother Rev. Polycarp Zongo who has been in captivity for months now, I want us to keep hope alive and never give up. The State and Federal Government is working with the Church to ensure that he regains his freedom. We cannot disclose everything here, but I urge you not to cease praying for him and all others who are in captivity.

Lalong Flags Off Special Public Works Programme For rural Areas In Plateau....

Lalong flags off Special Public works programme for rural areas in Plateau

January 8,2021

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

Plateau state Governor Simon Lalong on Friday  flagged off the Special Public Works Programme in the rural areas of  the state .

Speaking at the occasion which took place at the township primary school in Jos , Lalong said It is a great delight for me to address this unique occasion which is the official flag-off of the Special Public Works Programme in the Rural Areas here in Plateau State which was conceived by the Federal Government.

In his words " Without doubt, this is a great initiative that further demonstrates the determination of the APC-led Federal Government as well as the APC controlled States to tackle headlong the challenge of unemployment in the country."

"That is why the President approved that the initiative be carried out as a way of creating massive jobs at the lowest tier of the economy by maintaining critical public and social infrastructure at the rural base of the economy."

He said " I have been made to understand that the programme is designed to mitigate lack of job opportunities in the rural areas through a short-term engagement of One thousand unemployed persons per Local Government Area for a period of three months." This laudable programme is also designed for the rehabilitation and maintenance of public and social infrastructure. The participants who are to be paid a monthly allowance have been recruited largely from the pool of skilled and unskilled persons resident in the rural areas of all the local governments."

I am also aware that the selection of participants for this programme followed a broad-based engagement of various stakeholders cutting across government, civil society, religious and community representatives who ensured inclusivity, fairness and equity..

Lalong also congratulated  them for  being selected among the one thousand participants from Plateau State to take part in this scheme which does not only avail them  an opportunity to be engaged, but also offer service to your communities and the State as a whole.

"By the concept of the programme, you will be engaged in public works such as drainage digging and clearance, irrigation, canal clearance, rural feeder road maintenance, traffic control, street cleaning, cleaning of public infrastructure like health centres, schools and the likes."

" I charge you to put in your best in this assignment and ensure that you work with dedication, diligence and honesty. This is a call to national service and an opportunity for you to put your skills and talents to work."

He said "As a government, we have remained committed to creating job opportunities for our youths through training in various skills by the Plateau Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency (PLASMIDA) which has equipped thousands with various skills."

"Apart from this, we have also ensured that those who are trained also receive starter packs to start businesses. Many have made us proud by establishing ventures that are thriving as they not only have jobs, but are employing others. "

" That is why I have consistently advised our youths to focus on acquiring skills and knowledge to create opportunities for themselves rather than look up to Government for white collar jobs which are not available. We shall continue to support and empower anyone who shows interest in any of such programmes."

He said For the participants of this programme, I am confident that you shall not put us to shame because citizens of Plateau State are known for hardwork and excellence.
