Concentrate on solving security problems now than anything you're handling, GOPRI tells Buhari

Febuary 28,2021

*Charges president to be ruthless with bandits, insurgents if he wants peace to reign

*Says president's body language to criminals must clearly indicate intolerance

*Fears worsening insecurity may escalate to fatal dimensions unless...

*Hold state govts, police, military accountable where there are obvious lapses, negligence,it tells president

Against the backdrop of increasing cases of abductions and kidnappings occasioned by worsening insecurity in the country, a peace advocacy organization has tasked President Muhammadu Buhari to concentrate only on solving the security problems now.

The group asked the president to be ruthless with perpetrators not minding what they seem to be projecting.

The group, Global Peace and Life Rescue Initiative,GOPRI, particularly charged the president to clearly and actionably  indicate intolerance for the activities of bandits and perpetrators of similar criminal activities in the country.

Reacting to the current state of the nation in a statement through its Executive Director and rights activist, Amb. Melvin Ejeh, GOPRI warned that unless the president's body language to criminals completely changes to that of intolerance, perpetrators could mistake him for being in support of their activities, thereby heightening their acts, the result of which it feared, could be catastrophic for the country.

The organization, according to Amb. Ejeh, wants the president and his administration to not only be audacious but unambiguous in dealing with the security problems of the country with a view to nipping it in the bud before it gets to an irreversible point.

Expressing its regret that insecurity in the country was getting to the point where citizens can no longer sleep with their eyes closed, the organization insisted that "a lot more can be done both at the government and security agencies' level.

"The body language of the President and indeed the Government should clearly and actionably  indicate intolerance for the activities of these bandits and similar criminals. It should be audacious and unambiguous," it said.

Noting that,"The security situation in the country is really bad and has tendency to escalate to a more fatal dimensions if not tackled seriously and urgently",it tasked the government to sit up.

"Addressing the security challenges should be the Government’s topmost  priority now, any other thing can follow," it urged.

GOPRI, while noting that,"The security situation has direct impact on other aspects of our nation especially the economy, insisted that government must give priority to it.

" It should be given priority in terms of adequate, timely funding and other necessary support as well as strong political will,"it said.

"The President should hold the state governments, Police, security agencies and military accountable where there are obvious lapses and negligence," the group urged the president.

Noting that the president was not getting it right in the security subsector because, according to him, he was not being told the true situation of the  developments in the country, Amb Ejeh said:"Principal staff and aides to the President should support him by telling him the whole truth always."

"There is no need to hide under all these nepotism and selfishness. It is our country and we all have a stake and have to play our parts sincerely for the overall good of the nation and the future of the youths and our children," he reiterated.

Also advising security agencies on the way forward, the rights activist while noting that the police needed adequate funding to enable it confront insecurity headlong, however, observed that "most of them  have not shown enough commitment to justify previous investments and support given to them by the Government ( including state governments) and private individuals ( like Dangote and others)."

" It’s either they are deliberately trying to sabotage the efforts of the IGP or most of them are just not committed,"he said, adding: "I admit that we have some very fine and committed police officers who are doing very well despite the shortfalls (like DCP Abba Kyary, DCP Kolo and others)."

" But majority are not committed, we still have a lot of policemen and women paid regularly from tax payers' money and our common wealth without rendering commensurate services to the people. So what are most of them doing, hanging around on our major roads and cannot prevent most crimes?"He asked.

"I can’t imagine gunmen moving freely in towns and attacking police stations; carting away weapons and burning the stations. If the police can’t defend their police stations, how can they defend the people. What do the gunmen use that our policemen don’t have? Weapons? I think the DPOs of such stations should be held accountable. Scare funds will now be used to rebuild such police stations and procure weapons only for the gunmen to return again. It is unacceptable. We must say the truth.

"The Police have to sit up, train and  work assiduously with what is available as governments ( federal and state) make effort to provide necessary logistics. Also the hard working and committed policemen should be commended and adequately compensated, while the erring ones should be appropriately sanctioned," he said.

Commenting on the military's efforts in tackling insecurity, Ejeh, while admitting that "they have made visible efforts and are still doing so", however said "they can still do a lot more."

"I don’t subscribe to this idea of hyping the capabilities of these bandits and making them look invincible and super heroes . What weapons and logistics do they have that our troops don’t have more? Even most of the weapons and platforms used by Boko Haram terrorists were the ones abandoned by our troops.

"I urge the military commanders and troops to do more. Show more commitment and go beyond the normal call of duty. Yes, there are serious and worrisome deficits in funding, manpower and equipment but we cannot afford the luxury of being overwhelmed and watch these bad guys overrun our country," he said.

Going further, Amb. Ejeh said: "The military can continue to do more with available weapons and platforms/logistics while the government makes effort to provide the necessary funds and support. "

"These bandits do not have this kind of freedom of action in smaller  neighboring countries like Ghana, Togo and Benin, etc. The military just have to be more decisive and put these guys under pressure and not just waiting to react to situations.

" I don’t want to believe that the Government puts restrictions on their operations as some people think. It’s a time we all have to sacrifice and be committed to solve this problem.

"We must also apply technology where necessary and available. The non kinetic approach is also good and proven to be effective sometimes. But non kinetic approach can only be effective when we have robust Kinetic lines of operations and capabilities.

" In the cause of my work, I have come in contact with some military commanders who have shown unusual commitment in carrying out their duties and the troops follow suit. We also have several courageous and committed soldiers in the field who can do a lot better if well motivated. Let’s all do our best. What we are doing now is not enough. The truth be told. If we put the required effort we can reverse this situation in a few months,"he stressed.

He also tasked other security agencies to enhance their synergy and collaboration with the military.

"I'm aware that the intelligence agencies provide information on some of these attacks but the problem has always been the inability to respond promptly and appropriately. They should all continue to do more. It’s not time for inter-agency rivalry. If one fails, all of us have failed and will suffer the consequences," he charged.

The activist charged the citizens to close ranks.

"This situation is beyond all these our ethnic fault lines. These bandits and criminals are exploiting our fault lines to perpetuate their criminality unchecked. Let’s come together and support our military and security agencies to fight these guys," he said.

Advising the people to be wary of their comments on social media, he urged them to genuinely seek peace and security as according to him," that is the only way we can survive as individuals and as a nation."

" The path of war and destruction is not good for us, the consequences will be grave. Except you have not experienced war,"he warned.

While noting that "the obvious fact is that after the war and destruction the belligerents still come to the table to discuss for enduring peace to reign”. Ejeh further started that   "there must be give and take."

"Let me add here quickly that I’m a core supporter of President Muhammad Buhari and must commend him greatly for his developmental strides across the country. I know he means well for our country. However, the best way to love someone is to give him true counsel all the time even if it inconveniences his  or your personal interest. This is why I  appeal to   all his aides, high and low to speak for us to achieve a stable and prosperous Nigeria.

"They  must give him good counsel  concerning the state of security all the time, they must go extra miles  to add value to his government by being committed to their assignments. If Nigeria is unstable today, we cannot sit in that office they love so much.

"We may not get all our requests but we can reach workable and just agreements to make this nation work. We are not the only diverse country. We can maximize our diversity for progress and development to the glory of God ( our creator)," he opined.

Zamfara School Children- Northern Governors Says Enough Is Enough..

Northern States Governors Forum has condemned another attack on Government Secondary School, Jangebe in Zamfara State where where hundreds of schoolgirls were abducted.

In a statement  , Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Plateau State Simon Bako Lalong  said this trend is unacceptable and strong measures must be taken to put an end to it before it escalates into a monster that will consume educational pursuit and national aspirations.

The statement which  was signed by Simon Macham ,his director of press and public affairs reads that Governor Lalong said this development which is coming on the heels of the abduction of school children in Kagara, Niger State still being addressed, calls for serious concerns among all Nigerians.

He said "as Northern Governors, we are deeply saddened by this embarrassing and unfortunate attack on our children who are in schools to seek knowledge and build capacity to impact the nation and create a better society. The assault on schools where innocent and harmless students are targeted should not be condoned in any way because it has the tendency to set the nation back to ignorance and more poverty. The Northern part of the country in particular is more educationally disadvantaged and cannot afford to have these disruptions. Enough is enough".

The Northern Governors therefore urged security agencies to use every asset at their disposal to rescue the children and bring to justice those behind the act. They also want Nigerians to support the security agencies and government with credible information that will lead to swift resolution of the situation.

Lalong sympathised with the families of the abducted school children, the people and Government of Zamfara State, assuring them of the support of the Forum in tackling the problem.

The Northern Governors Forum rose from their meeting in Kaduna on Thurday where they resolved to take far reaching measures to address insecurity and other challenges of the region and the nation at large.

Lalong Got It Right On The Proliferation Of Arms On The Plateau....

Lalong got it right on the proliferation of arms on the Plateau

Febuary 25,2021

By Yakubu Dati

Any serious interrogation on the wave of crime and violence in Nigeria and especially the northern part of the country would not fail to include the challenges posed by the proliferation of arms in the country.

This is because various independent investigations into the causes of conflicts and violence have shown that the surfeit of arms and other weapons have largely been responsible for the upscale of violence.

This is not unconnected with the fact that people instead of reporting cases of perceived provocations to the authorities resort to self help.

Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, tried to highlight the enormity of this problem when he spoke about how different groups have armed themselves leading to serious threats to security being witnessed in the country but some, driven by impulse have without waiting to analyse his submission in the context of what he said, have come down heavily on the govenor.

The governor in the interview had explained that he was one of the first Governors to kick against the RUGA program when it was introduced because the concept was literally sneaked in for reasons he did not understand.

He said: "For me as Governor of Plateau State, I just heared that they have erected signposts in some sites within some local Governments. How can you earmark such a project without my knowledge and buy-in of the people in my State? I had no interest in it because it was far below the NLTP which was more robust and passed through series of engagements with critical stakeholders".

The Governor then condemned the resort by groups to carry arms  and called for strong measures to end the ugly trend lamenting  that there are many non-state actors who are in possession of arms, a situation that must be addressed.

He said, "Today, we are now seeing the hazard of allowing people do open grazing here and there. But they (herders) also want solution; by the time you explain to them, they also want to stay in one place, they would also want to keep away from carrying AK-47. I’m not justifying anybody to carry AK-47 but don’t forget that in the course of our deliberations and investigations, it was not only Fulani herdsmen that were carrying AK-47, even farmers were carrying AK-47."

To understand the issue in the context of what the governor was saying, it will be apt to review the content of other reports on conflicts on the Plateau. This I believe would vindicate the position of the Governor as someone who has chosen to be on the side of truth.

In the book, "Janjaweed in Middle Belt" written by veteran journalist and one of the repestected columnists on the Plateau, Mr. Jonathan Ishaku in far back 2015, the writer in trying to identify the causes of conflict in Nigeria,  dedicated a whole chapter to the issue of proliferation of arms in the entire country.

Ishaku had in Chapter Two of the book titled 'Armed Groups in Nigeria: A Geographical Distribution; made the following observations:

"Nigeria's weakened sovereignty,  fractured through years of military rule and frequent relapse into violent convulsions, ensured that by the turn of the millennium the nation witnessed a proliferation of armed groups spread across the land."

He then went on to categorize the problems according to the existing regions in the country and further observed that the trend in the Northcentral revealed elements of premeditation and organisations in the bloody invasions which appears to have given rise to other ethnic militias which emerged a vigilante groups.

He said specifically wrote that in

In May 2013, the Ombatse cult group in Nasarawa state, caught national attention when it ambushed a convoy of about 65 security officials killing 46 of them.

Then on October 26, 2020, the Guardian published a report on the proliferation of arms in Nigeria  and stated that the proliferation of small arms and ammunitions is driving the increasing rate of violence in Nigeria.

The report said, “The number of small arms in circulation in Nigeria, in the hands of civilian non-state actors is estimated at 6,145,000, while the armed forces and law enforcement collectively account for 586,600 firearms,”

This emphasised the fact that the trend of arms proliferation in Nigeria has had an impact on Nigeria’s internal security which has led to violence and the deaths and injury of thousands of innocent citizens.

The report observed that in the Nothern region, the proliferation of small weapons coupled with “existing state corruption, large tracts of ungoverned spaces, and mass unemployment has largely been responsible for the rising criminality and violence in Northern Nigeria.”

It said, "While the Northern Central region has seen clashes between “sedentary farmers and nomadic Fulani herders”, the North Central zone is rife with ethnic militias, making it a hotbed for violent ethnic and religious clashes facilitated using small arms.

It further stated that..." clashes between the farmers and herders have witnessed ammunition from at least 21 different nations. Some of these nations include Israel, Poland, Brazil, Iran, USA, Czech Republic, Algeria and Egypt.

Another preliminary findings from the National Small Arms and Light Weapons Survey locally manufactured arms illegally contribute to a large percentage of arms in circulation in Northern Nigeria especially in North Central.

It stated that “In Benue and Plateau states, both in the North Central region, locally made weapons are estimated to be used in over 50% of crimes committed – 62% for Benue State, and 69% for Plateau State."

All these buttress the fact that Governor Lalong was speaking from a position of authority when he made the statement.

The truth is that people have been driven by anger into taking the laws into their hands and this has led to illegal acquisition of fire arms .

The Federal government was well aware of this when in 2018, as part of its efforts to mop up prohibited and illegal firearms from wrong hands, revoked all firearms licenses in the country.

And in 2019, President Muhammadu Buhari signed an executive order to remove, revoke, banish all firearm or shotgun certificate or license in Nigeria.

Governor Lalong being an acknowledged peace ambassador, is not one to play political correctness when the issue involves the security of lives and property.

The Governor always says it as it is because he believes that only truth can heal wounds and bring lasting solution to our quest to live in harmony.

This is why we must commend our governor for the bold stand he has taken over the issue of arms proliferation and the steps he is taking to control it.

Yakubu Dati is the Hon. Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Town Planning, Plateau State.

We have to revisit the ideas of Sir Ahmadu Bello and other founding fathers that set up major foundations for growth and development".

He said ABU is one of the few legacies of the Northern Region still standing which must be sustained through active collaboration between the Northern States and the Federal Government.  Gov Lalong Working Towards Creating the Best Technology Ecosystem in West Africa - DG PICTDA

February 24,2021

Today at the old Government house, we re-instated our commitment towards making Plateau State a conducive environment for tech freelancers, remote developers and creatives. We had a parley discussion with the various security agencies and young people within the technology and creative sector on the new virtual work force of the 21st century and why we must allow it thrive.

The Plateau State Information and Communication Technology Agency is working towards granting protection to all tech freelancers, remote workers and creatives living in Plateau State against any form of harassment from security agencies. We will profile each and every one of them and grant protection to each of them.

Cyber security has become a thing of concern lately and as much as fraudulent activities keep rising, the Government of Plateau State is aware that there are those who are genuinely working virtually and deserves to be protected. We have taken time to sensitise the security agencies on the new virtual workforce and why these young people deserves to be protected. In the coming days we would be issuing statement on the new profiling guidelines.

In attendance was the Commissioner Science and Technology, Hon. Gyang Musa who reiterated Governor Lalong’s untiring efforts towards ensuring a more friendly environment for innovation and technology growth.

Expected Impact: That you carry a laptop bag would no longer mean you are a fraudster as you would be given identification that is verifiable by security personels and also a desk office to be created within PICTDA and the Police Headquarters for such purpose. Jos now welcomes all remote developers, freelancers and creatives who are looking for where to settle and work from. Governor Lalong is working towards creating the best technology ecosystem in West Africa.

Lalong Never Encouraged Or Endorsed Herdsmen Bearing Arms- Plateau APC..

Lalong  never encouraged or endorsed herdsmen bearing arms - Plateau APC

Febuary 24,2021

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

All Progressive Congress APC in Plateau on Wednesday berated the People's Democratic Party PDP over Comments credited to Governor Simon Lalong .

APC in a statement signed by Bashir Sati it's State Secretary  further said that Governor Simon Lalong  never encouraged or endorsed herdsmen bearing arms. Neither did he support any other group such as farmers, mechanics, kidnappers, politicians, cultists and other unauthorized persons in carrying AK-47 and other weapons. He merely cited the fact that because of the failure of security system, non-state actors including herders, farmers, etc are carrying arms, a situation that must be addressed quickly.

Our correspondent reports that the PDP in a statement signed by John Akans ,it's

Publicity Secretary in Plateau  said that Governor Lalong ought to resign from his position as it is clear that he is not competent to remain as Governor of our dear Plateau state.

He further said that It is very unfortunate that Plateau never got it this bad before, this is really sad for this great land, we are loosing our youths, women and children as a result of bandits/herdsmen attack, yet our Governor is still singing praises on the graves of the victims of gruesome murder, siege and land grabbing.

Akans also said "As a political party that is people centred we find this  statement self-serving, derogatory, unpatriotic, misleading, malicious, satanic and not only  a big lie but aiming at causing more  disaffection to already fragile relationship between farmers and herders."

It is obvious that Governor Lalong has abandoned the herculean task of governance to making unguarded statements, as one that suffers verbal diarrhea, his statements are always anti people.

Governor Lalong's submission on national television does not in any way reflect the position of Plateau people but his personal interest.

But in a swift reaction , the APC  in Plateau said the confused faction of the PDP in the  State is at it again making a storm in a tea cup over Governor Lalong's comments during an interview on Channels TV on Tuesday 23rd February 2021 where he was alleged to have said that not only herdsmen carry arms.

"Today, we are now seeing the hazard of allowing people do open grazing here and there. But they (herders) also want solution; by the time you explain to them, they also want to stay in one place, they would also want to keep away from carrying AK-47. I’m not justifying anybody to carry AK-47 but don’t forget that in the course of our deliberations and investigations, it was not only Fulani herdsmen that were carrying AK-47, even farmers were carrying AK-47 to protect themselves. This is because of the failure of the security architecture which we must address immediately"

How this self-explanatory and patriotic comment has become a feast for the factional PDP opposition group beats the imagination because those who are objective cannot take just 34 seconds to analyse a one hour interview. Besides, the out-of-context voyage of the PDP does not hold water as they are inputing what the Governor never said.

But the PDP faction twisted it to appeal to their isolated, gullible and disgruntled followers particularly on the social media by saying that Governor Lalong accused farmers of carrying arms. What an ingenious lie!

He cautioned the PDP from exploiting insecurity stressing that it  will never bring them back to power in Plateau State because the people measured their  16 years and found them  wanting on all counts particularly on security.

" Governor Lalong and the APC has succeeded in dymistifying your lies by restoring peace in the State, a situation that pains you dearly despite the fact that killings have drastically fallen to an all time low. He has succeeded where you failed woefully and you cannot stomach it."

Sati further said that the Governor's main goal of discussion on the program was to talk about how the insecurity in the country can be tackled wholistically and not to justify any illegal arm bearer.

" To resort to the use of uncouth language "taut, yesman" in reference to a Governor by a party which is desperate to occupy that office is most uncharitable and condemnable. Only a denigrated opposition party can go this low. Thankfully, they can only dream of the seat."

He said that " Latching on this fabricated storm by the PDP faction to again call for the Governor to resign is not only disingenuous, but a dead-on-arrival proposition to appeal to the fantacies and emotions of a failed party. Governors do not resign because of press releases please and certainly Governor Simon  Lalong,  will not resign because  he has a job to do and he is doing it with all his might, He is not perfect, but he is focused.

Stop Making A Storm In A Tea Cup,APC Berates Plateau PDP Over Lalong's Comments...

Stop making a storm in a tea cup, APC berates Plateau PDP over Lalong's comments

Febuary 24,2021

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

All Progressive Congress APC in Plateau on Wednesday berated the People's Democratic Party PDP over Comments credited to Governor Simon Lalong .

APC in a statement signed by Bashir Sati APC State Secretary in the State.

said the confused faction of the PDP in Plateau State is at it again! - making a storm in a tea cup over Governor Lalong's comments during an interview on Channels TV on Tuesday 23rd February 2021 where he was alleged to have said that not only herdsmen carry arms.

Predictably, the ever crude factional spokesman of the moribund party in Plateau State John T. Akans came out smoking from all cylinders in an attempt to resurrect the evaporated fortunes of the rejected PDP which has since been rejected by the good people of Plateau.

Apart from his mumbled rambling in the uncoordinated Press Release, he was sighted on different social media platforms dissipating energy in trying to make maximum gains from the Governor's appearance on the program. He viciously circulated a 34 seconds portion from the almost one hour interview with the hope to inflict massive damage on the Governor and the APC.

Alas, he succeeded hugely among the few, dispersed, gullible and disgruntled members of the faction of his party and a few other haters of Governor Lalong who derive pleasure in any venture that derides the Governor, and in their view capable of pulling him down using their usual score cards of religion, ethnicity and hate.

Sadly and very unfortunately, the total mission of the factional spokesman and his tattered faction failed woefully among majority of the people of the State and others around the world who are discerning, informed, intelligent and dispassionate in looking at issues from broad perspectives rather than the myopic tendencies of the dead PDP and remnant of its scattered flock.

For the benefit of those who did not watch the interview but relied on the propaganda extraction by Spokesman Akans and his team, here is what has generated sleepless nights for those the PDP want to brainwash.

For the benefit of the doubt, the Governor never encouraged or endorsed herdsmen bearing arms.

But the PDP faction twisted it to appeal to their isolated, gullible and disgruntled followers particularly on the social media by saying that Governor Lalong accused farmers of carrying arms. What an ingenious lie!

The question is, if the Governor wanted to make such direct accusation, will it be on TV? Is the PDP faction now the Chief security officer of the State? Do they have the intelligence report that the Governor has? Are they making excuses for people in possession of unlicensed arms? What point are they really trying to make? What is their goal?

Here is an advice to the moribund PDP faction:

1. Exploiting insecurity will never bring you back to power in Plateau State because the people measured your 16 years and found you wanting on all counts particularly on security.

2. Governor Lalong and the APC has succeeded in dymistifying your lies by restoring peace in the State, a situation that pains you dearly despite the fact that killings have drastically fallen to an all time low. He has succeeded where you failed woefully and you cannot stomach it.

3. The Governor's main goal of discussion on the program was to talk about how the insecurity in the country can be tackled wholistically and not to justify any illegal arm bearer.

4. To resort to the use of uncouth language "taut, yesman" in reference to a Governor by a party which is desperate to occupy that office is most uncharitable and condemnable. Only a denigrated opposition party can go this low. Thankfully, they can only dream of the seat.

5. Latching on this fabricated storm by the PDP faction to again call for the Governor to resign is not only disingenuous, but a dead-on-arrival proposition to appeal to the fantacies and emotions of a failed party. Governors do not resign because of press releases please and certainly His Excellency, Rt. Hon. (Dr) Simon Bako Lalong, KSGG, Executive Governor of Plateau State and Chairman, Northern Governors Forum will not resign! He has a job to do and he is doing it with all his might. He is not perfect, but he is focused.

Finally, the APC wishes to again advise and warn the PDP and its myriad of factions to stop making wild and inciting statements that further divide and polarise the people. They should either key into the consolidation of peace, security and the search for unity in Plateau State and Nigeria championed by Governor Lalong or keep their peace.

Plateau state Governor Simon Lalong has   expressed shock  over the sudden death of Flight Lieutenant Henry Piyo who died in a plane crash on Sunday .

It could be recalled that  one of the Nigerian Airforce   aircraft, a Beechcraft KingAir B350i (NAF 201), crashed while returning to the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja after reporting engine failure enroute Minna on Sunday morning .

Lalong Is A Nationalist ,His Comments On Farmers Bearing Arms Is The Bitter Truth- Plateau Group

Lalong is a nationalist, his comments on farmers bearing arms is the bitter truth - Plateau group

Febuary 23,2021

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

Group operating under the aegis of Plateau Regeneration group on Tuesday said that the comments attributed to Governor Simon Lalong  during an interview on Channels TV, Sunrise Daily on Tuesday 23 February, 2021 where he bared his mind on security challenges bedevilling the nation particularly herdsmen bearing arms is nothing but the bitter  truth .

In the said interview, the Governor was alleged to have said that not only herdsmen carry AK-47 as even some farmers also carry arms to protect themselves from the failure of the nation's security architecture to protect them.

The Governor's comments appear to have raised dust among social media users particularly on the Plateau with many quoting portions of the appearance to lash out at the Governor.

The group in a statement made available to newsmen and signed by Pam Datri the spokesman of the group  in Jos said what  Lalong said was nothing but the bitter truth .

"As a group we   are solidly behind our Governor  spoke the truth and nothing but the truth.

The statement reads that It is unfortunate that the comments of the Governor which were spoken in truth and in pursuance of lasting solution, were taken out of context by people who have pre-concieved motives and do not see beyond their noses. We are not surprised that the issues raised generated discourse unnecessarily.

"We want to state unequivocally that there is a proliferation of arms in the hands of non-state actors who are not from one tribe or religion. There is therefore nothing wrong if the Governor averred that not only herdsmen, but others carry arms illegally. Can the critics of the Governor swear that only herdsmen commit violent crimes with AK-47 and other weapons? Who are those involved in kidnapping, banditary, robberies, destruction of farms, attacks on villages, killing of innocent people, cattle rustling and cultism? Are they from one tribe or religion? The statistics from the security agencies speak differently as people of different backgrounds are involved in crime."

We call on people of the state to support Governor Lalong instead of crucifiying him , Governor  Lalong is nationalist who is determined to better Plateau and Nigeria .

Lalong  is doing  well as Governor and chairman of the Northern Governor's forum ,lets continue to support him ,he added .

Herdsmen Bearing Arms- Plateau Group Backs Lalong* Insists Criminality Has nNeither Tribe Nor Religion*

Herdsmen bearing arms - Plateau group backs Lalong

* Insists criminality has neither tribe nor religion

Febuary 23,2021

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

A Non-Governmental Group, Coalition For Truth, Justice and Peace has risen to the defence of Governor of Plateau State,  Simon  Lalong, and Chairman, Northern States Governors Forum, over comments attributed to him during an interview on Channels TV, Sunrise Daily on Tuesday 23 February, 2021 where he bared his mind on security challenges bedevilling the nation particularly herdsmen bearing arms.

However the Executive Director of the Coalition for Truth, Peace and Justice Comrade Ayuba Zion Garba in a statement made available to newsmen in Jos  said the group was solidly behind the Governor who according to them spoke the truth and nothing but the truth.

He said, "It is unfortunate that the comments of the Governor which were spoken in truth and in pursuance of lasting solution, were taken out of context by people who have pre-concieved motives and do not see beyond their noses. We are not surprised that the issues raised generated discourse unnecessarily.

Notably is the fact that the Governor said that farmers, herders and other non-state actors carry AK 47 rifles which is a statement of fact, and which to him is a thing of concern. Pundits have however turned what His Excellency said to a commodity to gain cheap political capital."

The group reiterated that His Excellency Rt. Hon. Simon  Lalong is a lover of peace and calling him names by disperaging him and quoting him out of context does not change the facts on ground, because the fact is that criminality knows neither tribe nor religion.

While not supporting any crime and criminal conduct, denial of this fact amounts to treachery and a disservice to humanity in general. The concern so raised by His Excellency demands applause and support in order to rid our society of criminals rather than condemnation.

The tendency to own criminality has taken us decades backward and Governor Lalong is not ready to turn a blind eye from the truth because of cheap popularity.

The group asks those hyping the innocent but truthful comments of the Governor to calm down and allow common sense to prevail as not everything is politics and not all interventions of the Governor can be faulted by simple reason of sentiments and parochial interests.

Garba therefore uses the opportunity to call on all well‐meaning Nigerians to look at security issues dispassionately and curb it to the bearest minimum so that Nigeria can be salvaged.

Why I Rejected Ruga In Plateau - Gov Lalong....

Why i rejected Ruga in Plateau - Gov Lalong

Febuary 23,2021

By Golok Nanmwa,Jos

Governor of Plateau State Simon Bako Lalong has given reasons why he rejected the Rural Grazing Area Program, commonly referred to as RUGA from being implemented in Plateau State.

A statement signed by  Simon Macham

Director of Press and  Public Affairs to the Governor said Lalong who was speaking on Channels TV programme Sunrise Daily in Jos said the RUGA Initiative  was a strange concept that came after the National Economic Council thoroughly debated, scrutinised and adopted the National Livestock Transformation Programme (NLTP) as a very comprehensive and inclusive idea to tackle herder-farmer clashes and other associated challenges.

He said because the RUGA initiative did not have the buy in of stakeholders and fell short of addressing the concerns of most Governors, it was not possible to embrace it. This he said further fueled the misconception over the NLTP which is neither for one ethnic group nor meant for land grabbing.

He said "I was one of the first Governors to kick against the RUGA program when it was introduced. To start with, the concept was literally sneaked in for reasons we did not understand. For me as Governor of Plateau State, I just heared that they have erected signposts in some sites within some local Governments. How can you earmark such a project without my knowledge and buy-in of the people in my State? I had no interest in it because it was far below the NLTP which was more robust and passed through series of engagements with critical stakeholders".

Lalong also said Plateau State subscribed to the NLTP because of the fact that it will carry along many groups and individuals involved in Livestock business and its associated value chains. These include farmers, herders and other people involved in processing of meat and packaging. There is also a provision for other animals such as sheep goats, pigs, and others.

Lalong who said Plateau State was chosen as one of the pilot States having earmarked the Wase and Kanam Grazing reserves, reiterated that the implementation of the National Livestock Transformation Programme (NLTP) will go a long way is addressing many of the issues associated with the activities of herdsmen which have led to clashes with farmers and other crimes.

On the violence perpetrated by herdsmen who bear arms, the Governor condemned the act and called for strong measures to end this ugly trend. He lamented that there are many non-state actors who are in possession of arms, a situation that must be addressed.

He said "today, we are now seeing the hazard of allowing people do open grazing here and there.

The Governor said in order to address the situation, deliberate efforts must be put in place to curtail the influx of light arms while other ways such as the NLTP must be embraced to take these people away from the old type of farming and then introduce them to the modern system.

INSECURITY: Herdsmen ,Farmers Now Carry AK-47,Lalong Laments....

Insecurity: Herdsmen, farmers now carry AK-47, Lalong laments

February 23, 2021

Kayode Oyero

Plateau State Governor, Simon Lalong, on Tuesday, lamented the proliferation of arms including AK-47 rifles amongst herders and farmers in the country.

Lalong, who is also the Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum, stressed that the full implementation of the National Livestock Transformation Plan was the solution to the frequent skirmishes between host farmers and nomadic cattle rearers.

He stated this while featuring on Channels Television’s ‘Sunrise Daily’ monitored by The PUNCH.

The governor insisted that open grazing must be banned and the ranching system of cattle breeding must be embraced by all to experience peace in the country.

He said, “Today, we are now seeing the hazard of allowing people do open grazing here and there. But they (herders) also want solution; by the time you explain to them, they also want to stay in one place, they would also want to keep away from carrying AK-47. I’m not justifying anybody to carry AK-47 but don’t forget that in the course of our deliberations and investigations, it was not only Fulani herdsmen that were carrying AK-47, even farmers were carrying AK-47.

“It is just proliferation of arms in respect to guarding themselves. Everybody is trying to protect himself, we shouldn’t allow self-help.

“At the time there were farmers-herdsmen clashes here (in Plateau), we arrested people, farmers also had AK-47 and the herdsmen were also holding AK-47 too. But if you want all of them not to hold AK-47 again, you must put deliberate efforts to curtail the influx of light arms and secondly find ways to take these people away from the old type of farming and then introduce them to the modern system".

LG Chairman Apologizes To Arrested Youths* Denies Giving Order For Arrests,Calls For Calm...

LG CHAIRMAN APOLOGIZES TO ARRESTED YOUTHS

...DENIES GIVING ORDER FOR ARRESTS, CALLS FOR CALM

Febuary 23,2021

Jos North Local Government Council Chairman, Hon. Shehu Usman, has apologized to arrested youths by the Special Task Force (STF) over land dispute in Jos, saying he did not give order for their arrests neither did he take sides in the dispute.

Speaking to some journalists in his office Monday, Shehu said the issue of the land dispute in some parts of Jos North has lingered for a very long time, and that the government is putting all efforts to resolve them by setting a committee which has submitted its report. According him, while the committee has submitted its report and government has started looking into it, tension brewed recently, and the government deployed security agents to maintain peace and order, but to his great dismay, he learnt that some arrests were made and some of the victims were beaten with some being hospitalized.

He added that he went to the hospital and offset their bills and begged the STF for their release.

Shehu said that justice will be done to all parties, and he will never take sides in the dispute.

He regretted of the arrests, and said as a leader he has to bear the bunt, and that he is sorry for the unfortunate incident, and asked citizens to stay calm as government works on the report to dispense justice.

All ICT Companies In Plateau Must Be Annually Registered With Plateau Information Communication And Technology Development Agency (PICTDA)...

All ICT Companies In Plateau Must Be Annually Registered With PICTDA ......

Febuary 23,2021

All ICT Companies both hardware and software in Plateau State must now be annually registered with PICTDA before they can be allowed to do business with MDAs of Government.

In a circular communicated to all MDAs of the Government of Plateau State yesterday, the 22nd of February 2021. It was stated by the Plateau State ICT Development Agency quoting the Plateau State Revenue (Consolidation) Law, 2020 that all companies or vendors who intend to do business with any MDA of the Government of Plateau State must from now register and obtain clearance certificate from the Agency on an annual basis.

This is not the first time that the Plateau State ICT Development Agency has waded fully into the implementation of its policy. It started last year through the issuance of an IT clearance guidelines it communicated to all MDAs through the state Auditor General. In what seems like an update to the guideline, PICTDA is boosting its attempt in ensuring that the sector is regulated and value for money is derived by government.

According to the Director General of the Plateau State ICT Development Agency, Mr. Daser David, “Two things that make sense to us is simply the fact that while we avoid duplication of projects, it is also in the best interest of the Plateau state technology ecosystem that local companies are protected and helped to achieve growth. The rescue administration through His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong, is interested in this sector and is fully committed in exploiting the opportunities it promises our young people. It is against such political will that we are acting”.

In its communication to all MDAs,  its statement reads,  “In line with the Plateau State Revenue (Consolidation) Law, 2020 and the rescue administration’s drive towards raising its revenue and streamlining its processes for the purpose of coordination, it has become mandatory that ICT vendors both hardware and software must be registered and certified by PICTDA before they can engage with any MDA of the Government of Plateau State. while automation processes are really very vital for enabling a lot of government processes and in serving the citizens in a most appropriate way It is very vital that the Plateau State Information & Communication Technology Development Agency (PICTDA) as mandated by the act establishing it be notified and carried along in every automation endeavour of all MDAs of Government. The law establishes that every IT company must be registered with the Plateau State ICT Development Agency before it can do business with any MDA of Government. Given the aforementioned, any engagement by any MDA of Government with any IT Vendor  who is not registered and certified by PICTDA is a violation of the Plateau State Revenue (Consolidation) Law, 2020.”

The said memo has also been communicated to IT companies within Plateau State via email.

She said that the essence of governance was to impact on the lives on the people, and urged elected officials to always live to that expectation.

Drug Abuse: YALI Network Sensitize 200 Secondary School Students In Plateau....

Drug abuse - YALI Network sensitize  200 secondary school students In Plateau

Febuary 21,2021

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

Worried  over the increasing spate of drug abuse among secondary school students in Plateau state, a non-governmental organization (NGO) the Young Africa Leaders Initiative (YALI) Network in collaboration with the US Embassy at the weekend  launched an aggressive campaign against drug abuse targeting 200 students in two public schools.

Speaking to newsmen in Jos  , the Plateau state Coordinator, Esther Mark, said they are also working together with the Mandela Washington Fellow.

According to her, "YALI is working to see how we can actually sensitize the young ones on the need to avoid drug abuse since is becoming serious issue on the Plateau.

In her words "So we came up with this in collaboration with all the YALI Networks. The US Embassy gave us backing because YALI Network is a programme from the US Embassy.

"That is why we have come together to conceptualize this idea to see how we talk to the young ones and make them make credible decision at this stage of their lives. To see how they can make meaningful things out of their lives.

"It is not just ending here, we are hopeful to form clubs in schools here on the Plateau and Yobe. In these clubs, we will involve students to be part of it."

She said already, YALI Network has made efforts to identify some children who are under the bad influence of drug abuse, pointing out that, "what they will be doing at the end of the day is to be talking to each other. We will bring in the resource persons who will ginger them to see how they can avoid the painful habit and problem of drug abuse.

"So, they will be taking the whole of YALI online courses in YALI Network website and we will be talking with them over time and we will be inaugurating the clubs and preffects today.

"We choose two schools for the project in Plateau State and we are looking for up to a hundred students in a club of each of this schools.

"Basically, we have started with the SS two students but for the project we are pushing it to beyond the SS two students.

"So, for the students, we are talking with the principal. She mentioned some students who have already made commitment with the wrong people. So we are not limiting the club only on SS two students, we are pushing it to the whole school."

She added that, "the plan is that  they should  imbibe the culture and take other steps to avoid it drug abuse.

"It has mental effect on them. There is danger and connotation attached to it. You will see them misbehaving and as long as you mentally dragged you whom be able to achieve all you set out to achieve. And because we preach and achieving our dreams, we preach leadership you know this are the steps take to become what they want to be.

"There may be other issues but generally, we are looking at the mental imbalance disturbing the society and we want how it doesn't affect them. Because when it affect one, it affect the family and also affect the society!"

According to her, "to hold the campaign of this nature you need funding, you need resources. We are happy to extend to other schools.

"There is something we call a pilot project, so we just started. We see what we can do and how it went and then we go back to the drawing board to re-strategize.

"Our major focus at this point is public schools because most public schools don't have the right resources to teach and give students all the needs.

"So, we are starting with the public schools which are low income schools and as we are gradually progress, we can now go to other schools which is drugs free now come in. So we may not run the campaign in all the schools but we also set up a drug free clubs in other schools gradually the same teaching we are doing, the same thing will be incorporating."

Esther said, "there is also a community engagement partnership of the whole project after they have started a drug free campaign and a drug free clubs ove
