NIGERIA @61

THE RHETORIC OF NIGERIA @61

By Pwol Benjamin Dature

1st October, 2021.

The above pictures reflect a true message for any that cares to envisage.

Tolerance irrespective of tribe, ethnicity, religion, political affiliation and ideology is what propels a nation into success.

We must as a people consolidate on our gains rather than cause disintegration with our gains to ravage the small progress recorded on ground.

Criticism can be helpful but only when constructive and coming from a vintage point of love and patriotism to our nation. Therefore, let us work together for the collective good of our nation.

Permit me to build on the words of the famous American emancipator, Martin Luther king jnr, "I pray one day we will all live in a Nation where we will not be judged by our political affiliation, ethnicity, religion, skin pigmentation, but rather by the content of our characters”

Nigeria at 61 still growing at a snail speed but in unity we can accelerate its growth.

We have no other nation to run to but Nigeria,

On this note ”The state of plateau ” wishes all Nigerians, a united independence day celebration.

The statement read; "We can no longer bear good leaders sacrificed on the alter of party nomenclature. All the political parties currently available to us have not shown any difference both in ideology and integrity from one another. What really matters to us now is the testimony of the candidate involved.

Therefore, first of all we commend the rare loyalty of Hon Kwande to the APC amist the obvious that PDP or any other party would have warmly accepted him had he decided to decamp. Nevertheless, we want to assure him that any party he pitches tent with is not hindrance to our support".

Then came the direct warning; "Hon Suleiman Yahaya Kwande, do not quench our hope in you in the name of extreme party loyalty. Yes go ahead with the party you believe in but if the party will not reciprocate leave. Just make it to the ballot in whatever party nomenclature and leave the mobilization to us!"

He said "While some may use the current travails that the nation is witnessing to cast a shadow of hopelessness and despondency, we should never allow the trials of today overshadow the many successes that our nation has witnessed in the past and the many good things that have continued to happen up till date. Many prophets of doom had prophesied that we shall not live to witness this year and some people representing both internal and external interests have also worked fruitlessly to fulfill this prophesy."

Lalong said he was very sure that at the end of the day, Nigeria shall emerge very strong and prosperous, exceeding all expectations and putting behind all disappointments. All that is needed according to him is for Nigerians to work together in unity, tolerance, sincerity, loyalty and patriotism to ensure that the nation lives up to its God-given potentials.

He said "for far too long, we have focused on our differences and weaknesses, and trivialized or even ignored our strengths and prospects. We seem to dissipate so much energy on defining people based on their religion, tribe, ethnicity and even political orientation completely neglecting their capacities, gifts, talents and willingness to serve humanity. We have been blinded by such myopic considerations that we fail to see that God has a plan for creating us with diversity and yet making us dependent on one another".

The Governor maintained that there is no great nation that has refused to embrace diversity, tolerance, excellence, good work ethics, and a national philosophy that is based on honesty, reward for hardwork and punishment for deviance.

Lalong insisted that Nigerians cannot embrace corruption, despise hardwork, shun the rule of law, champion nepotism and bigotry, act selfishly, oppress one another particularly the and vulnerable, and yet expect to build a great nation.

Great nations according to him have entrenched good governance, rule of law, tolerance, patriotism, social welfare, respect for human rights and zero tolerance to corruption and indiscipline - an example that Nigeria has no option than to follow if it must make head way.

Reading from the book of Jeremiah 27 and Luke 8:24-25 among other chapters, Deputy Chaplain of the Plateau State Government House Chapel, Rev. Ezekiel Dewan said Nigerians must avoid negative narratives as there is power in the tongue. He said those who give up at difficult times may not benefit from God's intervention when it arrives as they may be too blind to recognize it.

He admonished Nigerians to pray for God's mercy on Plateau State and Nigeria, as the Bible directs citizens to not only pray for their leaders, but also for the cities where they dwell. He also asked that there should be constant prayers for God to turn the wisdom of the wicked into foolishness and stop them from troubling Nigeria.

In separate goodwill messages, the Atah Ateng of Ganawuri (representing the State Traditonal Council), GOC 3rd Division and Commander Operation Safe Haven Maj. Gen. Ali, said though Nigeria is passing through difficulties of insecurity, poverty and disease among others, there is hope for the future as God is raising leaders who will unite all people, lead with the fear of God, and shun all forms of evil for nation development.

Special prayers were offered for the Government and th

APC will sweep Plateau LGA polls - Lalong

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

Ahead of the Local Government elections scheduled for 9th October 2021 in Plateau State, Governor Simon Bako Lalong on Saturday  flagged off the campaign for the All Progressives Congress which is fielding candidates for the 17 Local Governments.

While flagging of the campaign at the Shendam mini stadium, Governor Lalong said the APC has done a lot for the development of the State and attained greater acceptance which will guarantee its total victory during the elections.

He said the APC has steadily deepened its roots in Plateau State through his Government's people-driven projects and programmes that have encompassed every part of the State.

Lalong said the APC has been attractive to the citizens of the State because of equity, fairness and inclusivity which has enhanced the peace and tranquility prevailing in the State, until the recent attacks which were clearly orchestrated by enemies of the people.

Governor Lalong while presenting flags to the candidates urged them to go to the polls with  confidence as the people have seen and touched the performance of the APC which will spur them to choose the party during the ballot.

The Governor said "APC is the party of choice in Plateau State just as it is being embraced by people from other parties at the national level. I am very optimistic that we will sweep the elections because we don't have opposition in Plateau State thanks to our performance. We have shown leadership that is centred on the peace and progress of the Plateau. We have completed projects that we inherited even from the other party because of their impact on the lives of the people. We also initiated and executed many of our own projects without concentrating on one section alone or showing preference for a particular group. That is the secret of our success and acceptability in Plateau State. The results will definitely manifest on 9th October when we sweep the polls".

He urged members of the party and the entire people of the State to conduct themselves peacefully before, during and after the elections and not allow politicians cause a breach of the peace.

For the candidates, he asked them to carry along women and people living with disabilities in governance. Already he said, many of the local Government flag bearers have women as their Deputies.

Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives Idris Wase said the party has grown in the State because of the leadership style of Governor Lalong which is based on fairness, rule of law and the pursuance of peace.

He maintained that the State has derived a lot of dividends of democracy through the administration of Governor Lalong who has effectively collaborated with President Muhammadu Buhari and the Federal Government.

Deputy Governor Prof. Sonni Tyoden urged the party faithfuls particularly the candidates to go into the elections with confidence and determination to serve the people. Similar confidence was given by the Deputy Speaker Plateau House of Assembly, Saleh Yipmong who said the party will emerge victorious.

Responding on behalf of the other flag bearers from the 17 Local Government areas, Miskoom Alex Naantuam of Shendam Local Government said they are ready to get down to business of mobilising the people at the grassroots in order to ensure victory.

YOU'RE A TRUE SON OF PLATEAU STATE; LALONG TO REV. YAKUBU PAM

The Plateau State Governor, Simon Bako Lalong Friday commended the Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission, NCPC, Rev Dr. Yakubu Pam for ending the first-ever Jordan pilgrimage successfully.

Governor Lalong gave the commendation when the latter paid him a thank you and condolence visit at the Government House, Rayfield.

He said Plateau State was proud of the exploits of the NCPC boss describing him as a true son of the State who despite the odds that stood against him and especially the covid19 pandemic, he pioneered the holy journey to the Kingdom of Jordan successfully without hinged.

He promised to sponsor more Christians to the holy land in the next pilgrimage.

On the crises that bedeviled the state, the Governor said normalcy was fast returning and was happy with the way his government handled the crises nipping it in the bud.

According to the Governor, the state was making plans to establish a Plateau Development Commission should the federal government turn down their request a second time to be included in the Northeast Development Commission.

He said the state needs to return all Internally Displaced Persons to their ancestral homes and would stop at nothing to ensure it works and said the federal government has to reconsider her commitment to the state by her inclusion in the Northeast Development Commission, NEDC.

The Governor further said the federal government has sent in huge palliatives to the displaced persons.

He commended the President for his quick intervention by sending additional troops and ordered the supply of relief materials to carter for the victims in the state.

Earlier, the Executive Secretary had told his host that he was here to thank him for his support during and after the 2020 Christian pilgrimage which was kickstarted in Plateau State.

According to Rev Pam, the Governor did exceedingly well and above any other Governor by supporting him 99%.

He said the Governor spent huge sums of money in putting certain facilities at the Jos Airport and sent the highest number of pilgrims to the holy land aside from the financial backing which enabled the trip a success.

He said the Plateau contingent was well behaved and praised the leadership of the State Pilgrim Board for providing good leadership before, during, and after the exercise.

He said Jordan houses a lot of tourism sites and has some of the best hospitals in the world. He intimated to his host that an MoU on medical tourism between Nigeria and Jordan is to be signed and promised Plateau state will be given a prime position as the state is renowned for its Peace and Tourism slogan.

He however expressed sadness during the crises that killed many people including children, women, and the aged who were hacked to death.

Rev Pam said, the gory pictures of what happened was a sad commentary of what the devil was all out to achieve but thank God that his mission failed as the Governor exhibited leadership by ending the crises within days shaming enemies of the state who had thought and wished the crises lasted more than unnecessary.

He commended the humility of the Governor in. every situation and showed appreciation to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Boss Mustapha, and other friends of the state who came visiting.

Pledged to stand by the government in fishing out those behind the crises. He said justice must be established by ensuring that those found wanting should face the wrath of the law.

He called on the federal government to assist the state as over 60% of the meager resources of the State can not be enough to handle this problem.

He said for lack of money IDPs would have been returned to their homes and described the carnage as massive.

He said he is planning to bring together religious leaders in the state to sit at the round table to dialogue encouraging intelligence-gat

GOVERNOR LALONG HARPS ON ROAD SAFETY CULTURE AMONG NIGERIANS

Plateau State Governor Simon Bako Lalong has advocated for an intensification of the road safety culture among Nigerian road users particularly among those who drive or intend to drive.

Governor Lalong was speaking at the 10th anniversary of Kwapda'as Road Safety Demand (KRSD) Foundation a nonprofit organisation founded in honour of late Prince Kwapda'as Rangna'an Dongban, son of the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem.

Governor Lalong while commending the President of the Court of Appeal for establishing the Foundation, said she has used the painful story of the tragic death of her son in a motor accident, to raise awareness and education to halt further needless deaths on Nigerian roads.

He said the fact that many people are on the road without the requisite knowledge and experience of driving is very disturbing as many accidents occur because of recklessness and ignorance. Time he said had come when people must be conscious of the rules of safe driving and also promote it wether they are driving or not.

He stated that Plateau State has continued to work towards improving the safety and efficiency of public transport which is a major economic driver. A bill for the establishment of a transport management commission he said has been approved by the Plateau State Executive Council which is before the House of Assembly for legislative action.

Founder of KRSD Foundation, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem said for the past ten years, the foundation has made efforts to bring to the fore the needless sufferings and deaths that are foisted on innocent citizens due to the careless actions of drivers who either refuse to obey traffic regulations or fail to take care of their automobiles.

She said her story has served as a pivot for further highlighting the issue of road safety culture among Nigerians through the many programmes and engagements that have been organised at different levels.

Justice Dongban-Mensem thanked Governor Lalong and other stakeholders in and outside the country for supporting the foundation to carry out its vision for a more safe and secure road transportation.

FCT Minister Mohammed Bello, Transport Minister Rotimi Amaechi, and other speakers advocated for stiffer penalties in enforcement of road traffic rules and regulations.

High point of the event was the presentation of awards and decoration of KRSD, Patrons and Special KRSD Marshals. Among those awarded was Governor Simon Bako Lalong.

Yusuf Kwande offers lifeline to orphans, sponsors their education

From Kateng Daniel

It was a moment of joy and excitement for a helpless and hopeless orphan, Musa Muhammad who divinely met with Yusuf Yahaya-Kwande that decided out of his love for the vulnerable and humanity sponsored his education from the primary to tertiary level.

Muhammed met with Yusuf Kwande, son of former Ambassador of Nigeria to Switzerland in 2008 at a traffic light in Wuse 2, Abuja selling plastic water under the bitting sun.

Yusuf Kwande gave Muhammad N1,000 note that fateful day and after few hours, God cross their path again and he extended some money again to him to enable him feed himself.

Few hours after the last encounter that same day, Muhammad ran into Yahaya-Kwande at Big Bites which he considered very strange and extended his business card with clear instruction that he should call him when he got home.

Muhammad yielded to the instruction and called the line and behold, Yusuf Kwande picked the call and decided to speak with his mother.

Yusuf Yahaya-Kwande asked the mother, why was Muhammad selling plastic water under the sun while his peers are in school; she replied with a low tune that his father was dead and she has no money to send him to school.

Months after then, Muhammad was arrested by Environmental Task Force for selling water on the streets of Abuja and a call was put across to Yahaya-Kwande, he gladly rushed to the office and rescued him with his friends.

He took Muhammad home where he saw his mother for the first time and decided to give her some money to set up a small business, sadly, she eventually died after illness.

Yahaya-Kwande also pledged to sponsor Muhammad's education and that of his siblings; he extended some goodwill to their neighbours who witnessed the divine intervention.

He equally sponsored Ibrahim Rahj to Serbia and Turkey for football trial after he came to squat with Muhammad when he lost his parents.

At the moment, Muhammad is filled with joy and excitement as he has completed his National Diploma which has changed positively the living condition of the family.
