Gov Lalong inaugurates steering committee for the development of Plateau State

By Golok Nanmwa , Jos

Plateau state Governor  Simon Lalong ,on Wednesday inaugurated a  steering committee for the development of the state.

Speaking at the occasion in Jos , the Governor said that despite the fact that his administration is scheduled to exit the stage in less than two years from now, he is determined  to leave behind positive and lasting legacies for the people of Plateau State.

In his words "I had charged the Programme Management and Results Delivery Office (PMRDO), to work with our State Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Office, to leverage on the experiences and the lessons learned from our participation at the 2019 session of the United Nations General Assembly to craft a development plan that will outlive this current administration. "

Lalong also said that "The Plateau State Agenda 2050 will not only build upon the gains of the current Plateau State Development Strategy 2019 – 2023, but will also deliberately align it's aspirations as a State to the global development targets and indicators captured in the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), he added.

He further said  "We are conscious of the dwindling inflow of resources from the centre, and the resultant agitations from various States in Nigeria for a review of the revenue sharing formula. "

"Our aspiration as a State is to continue to grow and develop in such a manner that in no distant time, we will no longer need to depend on the inflow of resources from the centre. Already, we have started looking inwards and achieving modest results."

"Plateau State is blessed with so many natural resources in agriculture; solid minerals; and tourism, which should make this State a significant net surplus contributor to the national coffers."

" I believe Nigerians have not forgotten the fact that Plateau State in the past played a key role in sustaining the Nigerian economy with the tin and Columbite from her mines for several decades before the advent of oil in this country. "

He charged the  Steering Committee to leave no stone unturned in the effort of developing the blueprint that will restore Plateau State to the top three States in Nigeria with respect to economic development, good governance, and the social welfare of her people.

"As a gender-sensitive Governor and one who believes in the capacity of women to contribute effectively to assignments such as this, I promise to include on this committee, the Head of the Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunity Commission immediately ".

He called on the committee to provide strategic leadership and direction for the Development Plan Project as well as to ensure the carrying out of a Needs Assessment and set up Sectoral Working Groups accordingly as well as o oversee the process of developing the Plan and guide the work and activities of the Sectorial Working Committees, ensuring consistency with their respective Terms of Reference.

He said that  committee would report regularly to the Executive Governor on the progress of work on the project and to provide necessary linkages between the State Executive Council, the State House of Assembly, the State Traditional Council, the Organised Private Sector and other relevant  Stakeholders in the State.

" The composition of this committee has been carefully designed to convey sufficient authority, ensure inclusivity, and build sustainability. It is expected that the consultative engagements in this assignment will be wide and devoid of any partisan preferences. Only the best will be good enough for our state."

Our correspondent reports that  the Deputy Governor of Plateau State Prof Sonnie Tyoden would act as Chairman of the committee  ,while the Deputy Speaker of the Plateau State House of Assembly , as well as  Secretary to the Government of the State Prof Danladi Atu  would serve as members .

1. It is a great privilege to welcome you to this brief but very important event. Despite the fact that this administration is scheduled to exit the stage in less than two years from now, holding this kind of activity is a clear demonstration of our commitment to lay the foundation for the growth and long-term development of Plateau State over the next thirty years. That is, the focus of Plateau State Agenda 2050.

2. In our continuous efforts to leave behind positive and lasting legacies for the people of Plateau State, I had charged the Programme Management and Results Delivery Office (PMRDO), to work with our State Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Office, to leverage on the experiences and the lessons learned from our participation at the 2019 session of the United Nations General Assembly to craft a development plan that will outlive this current administration.

3. I was therefore excited to receive the report that these two offices successfully collaborated to attract the support of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) for the development of the Plateau State Agenda 2050. It is our intention to maximize this opportunity which the UNDP has provided for Plateau State to prepare for a better future.

4. The Plateau State Agenda 2050 will not only build upon the gains of the current Plateau State Development Strategy 2019 – 2023, but will also deliberately align our aspirations as a State to the global development targets and indicators captured in the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

5. The saying goes that “He who fails to plan, plans to fail.” Going by the dynamic nature of global challenges that resonate with every part of the world including Plateau State, we are determined to ensure that we are not caught napping. That is the reason why we are laying down this plan to ensure that Plateau State does not fail particularly in the days of adversity.

6. We are conscious of the dwindling inflow of resources from the centre, and the resultant agitations from various States in Nigeria for a review of the revenue sharing formula. Our aspiration as a State is to continue to grow and develop in such a manner that in no distant time, we will no longer need to depend on the inflow of resources from the centre. Already, we have started looking inwards and achieving modest results.

7. Plateau State is blessed with so many natural resources in agriculture; solid minerals; and tourism, which should make this State a significant net surplus contributor to the national coffers. I believe Nigerians have not forgotten the fact that Plateau State in the part played a key role in sustaining the Nigerian economy with the tin and Columbite from her mines for several decades before the advent of oil in this country.

8. I make bold to say that we can do it again as those resources are still available in abundance. Besides, we have human resources and talents in various fields that we are ready to offer the world. That is why we have planned an Economic and Investment Summit that will enable us remind investors of the vast opportunities that Plateau State is blessed with

9. Bearing this conviction in mind, I wish to charge this Steering Committee to leave no stone unturned in the effort of developing this blueprint that will restore Plateau State to the top three States in Nigeria with respect to economic development, good governance, and the social welfare of her people.

10. The composition of this committee has been carefully designed to convey sufficient authority, ensure inclusivity, and build sustainability. It is expected that the consultative engagements in this assignment will be wide and devoid of any partisan preferences. Only the best

The Chairman of the Northern Governors Forum and Governor of Plateau State, Simon Bako Lalong has congratulated the Muslim Ummah in Nigeria as they join their counterparts worldwide to  mark this year’s Eid-el Maulud .

The Governor in a message on behalf of his colleagues to commemorate the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad, said the special occasion brings to remembrance the teachings of the Holy Prophet who emphasized love, forgiveness, peaceful coexistence and humility among others.

He said the failure of humanity to practice love is what has given rise to selfishness, violence, intolerance, religious bigotry, ethnic hatred, corruption, high crime rate and unimaginable level of wickedness that is prevalent in various forms.

Lalong said this celebration should be used as a moment for reflection and reconsideration of the fortunes of the nation which can be changed if all Muslims live their lives according to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) as contained in the Holy Qur’an.

He said Nigeria is in dire need of inter-religous harmony and dialogue, practical faith based conduct as well as truthful lifestyles that unite people and enhances their ability to experience and share love with one another irrespective of their faiths, education, economic status and ethnicity.

While wishing the Muslim community a successful celebration, Governor Lalong assured them that the Northern Governors Forum will continue to work hard in promoting peace, tolerance, national unity and religious harmony particularly in the present circumstances where the nation is in need of a common front to overcome, corruption, insurgency, fight poverty and accelerate development.

Operation SAFE HAVEN have noted the arrangement by some Muslim Youths on the Plateau to hold a procession to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad SAW (PbuH) on Tuesday 19 October 2021.

Information received also indicated that the procession is organized without the knowledge of Jamaatul Nasir Islam, security agencies and the Plateau state government.

While felicitating with the entire Muslim ummah on the birth of Prophet Muhammad SAW (PbuH) and recognising the right to such processions under different circumstances, it is however  expedient to state that the fragile peace on the Plateau does not present a conducive  atmosphere for any form of procession at the moment.

Further to this, Operation SAFE HAVEN therefore wishes to draw the attention of the youths and  members of the public on the ban of any kind of protest and procession by the state government which is still in force.

Consequently, Operation SAFE HAVEN encourages the Muslim faithfuls to observe the Maulud without any form of procession.

Meanwhile, the Commander, Operation SAFE HAVEN Major General Ibrahim Ali has directed troops to ensure that no group organizes any form of procession during the period of the Maulud.

Operation SAFE HAVEN is working assiduously with the Plateau state government, critical stake holders such as traditional rulers, religious leaders and law abiding citizens to ensure peaceful co-existence. To live together, we must live in peace with one another.

DG ITF Urges staff to Imbibe reading culture

By Golok Nanmwa , Jos

Director General of the Industrial Training Fund ITF Sir Joseph Ari on Monday said reading is a critical tool of empowerment.

He also stressed  the need for all staff of ITF  to engage themselves to imbibe reading culture.

Ari  made this known while speaking at the ITF 14th Library week held at the headquarters  in Jos.

"In the ITF, the first Library Week was organised in 2007 and was aimed at boosting the reading culture in the ITF staff and other users. Since then, the event has been organised every year, leading to marked increment in the patronage of its numerous services, he added .

Represented by Dickson Onuoha  ,the Director Information and Communication of the fund  ,Ari said "I am very delighted to be here for the 14th edition of the ITF Library Week, which is an important activity on the Fund’s annual calendar that affords us the platform to celebrate the invaluable role of libraries, librarians and library workers play in transforming societies.

In his words " What  we are celebrating today, dates back to 1958, when the American Library Association (ALA) organised the first library week. "

He further  said that the decision to organise the Library week by the Association was premised on the fact that fewer people were spending money on books, and devoting more time to television and radio shows.

Ari also added that this year, the ITF Library Week with the theme: Library Matters: Building a Reading Culture, is in furtherance of our continued efforts to ensure well rounded staff that are mentally and intellectually prepared to drive the achievement of our onerous mandate.

"As you may be aware, the ITF Library offers an array of services and opportunities for knowledge growth within our community because it contains a wide range of books on various subject matters for diverse readers, and is open not only to staff and their children/wards but to members of the general public desirous of taking advantage of its immense resources. "

The question may be asked; why the emphasis on building a reading culture? Why do libraries matter? For us, the answer is simple; as the leading Human Resource Development Organisation in Nigeria, with the wide ranging mandate to provide, promote and encourage the acquisition of skills, we are expected to be ahead of the field in the discovery of new and trending skills, information and knowledge. For us therefore, knowledge creation is a sine qua non.

It is often said that, “You cannot give what you don’t have.” Therefore, for the ITF to sustain the momentum of growth, increasing relevance and its positioning as a leader in the ever changing and fast-paced knowledge economy in Nigeria, we must embrace and imbibe a strong reading culture otherwise, our vision of aspiring to be among the best in the world will not be fully realized.

This is because organisations that embrace a reading culture build creative and innovative teams that set the tone for development in their sector. In addition, a reading Organisation is basically a learning Organisation that will remain ever relevant because they are able to adapt to any change in the environment that is occasioned by either technology or policies of Government.

He  stressed  that reading is not only for organizational growth alone but also for individual benefit as it aids in developing the individual’s thoughts, cognitive mental stimulation and brain exercising, vocabulary and knowledge expansion, stress and tension relief and helps with depression and dysthymia amongst others.

Ari called on citizens  to visit the library and pick a book and read. I implore you to also make reading part of your daily life; Make a plan read a book a month and by the end of the year, you would have read twelve books.

"We have a library that can boast of being one of the best on the Plateau State. I urge you to visit our library and I assure you that you will find inte

Barring any last-minuite changes, all is set for the affirmation of Honorable Rufus Bature - the consensus candidate presented by Plateau North APC Stakeholders to spearhead the affairs of our great party, the All Progressives Congress as State Chairman.

Given that the 2023 general elections are lurking at the corner and the burning desire to have a State Chairman that understands the ropes to consolidate the formidability of the party and lead us to extend our winning streak in our strongholds, capture our weakholds and deepen the gains of the RESCUE ADMINISTRATION of our peace loving Governor, Simon Lalong, the choice of Honorable Rufus Bature couldn't have come at a better time.

As a former Minority Leader in the Plateau State House of Assembly, DG of Lalong/Tyoden Campaing Organisation that wrestled power from PDP in 2015 and Secretary to the Government of Plateau State (2015-2019) I can say with the highest degree of precision that Hon Rufus Bature will leverage on his pedigree, tenacity, experience, wining formular and magic wand to do the job.

It is my earnest prayer that God leads the way for him as he navigates us to a resounding victory in 2023.

The quest to upgrade the Federal College of Education, Pankshin to the status of a full university of education for the award of Degrees in Education, in order to foster teacher education in Nigeria has taken a giant leap with the passage of a bill for that purpose by the House of Representatives today.

At the plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Rt Hon. Ahmed Idris Wase today, report on the bill presented earlier this year by the member representing Pankshi/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi for an Act to provide for the establishment of Federal University of Education, Pankshin, Plateau State, for the promotion and development of education in Nigeria and other matters related thereto, was laid for consideration by the Chairman of the House Committee on Tertiary Education and Services, where the House had unanimously voted for the passage of the bill.

With this milestone achieved, the sponsor of the bill and member representing PKK was full of gratitude to the leadership of the House of Representatives for giving the bill the needed speedy consideration in view of the strategic importance of fostering education in Nigeria, by breeding high quality teachers, while assuring the takeoff of the university before the end of his tenure in 2023.

The lawmaker assures of speedy concurrence of the bill by the Senate, having already sought consideration of his colleagues in the red chamber and the assurance by leadership of the Senate to fast track concurrence of the bill once passed by the House of Representatives.

Speaking on why the bill has received speedy consideration of the House of Representatives and its likelihood to receive similar fate at the Senate, Rt Hon. Gagdi said such speed is underscored by the importance of the bill in the educational life of Nigerian nation and the dogged lobbying prowess of the sponsor of the bill.

As an alumni of FCE Pankshin, Gagdi said if all he could achieve in his four years tenure as the member representing PKK was the taking off of the institution, then he would have left the National Assembly a fulfilled man, who has achieved everything, not only for his constituency, but the state in general.

Gagdi assures the FCE community that the taking off of Federal University of Education, Pankshin is a near done project that will come to fruition in no distant future, as both human and capital resources already in the institution for its smooth takeoff.
