The State of Plateau as a platform seeks to promote democracy on the local level by bringing the fore issues concerning the State, and facilitating citizens debate on public issues, through participation in government decision making.

The Northern Governors Forum has rejoiced with the former Governor of Nasarawa State Senator Umaru Tanko Almakura on the occasion of his birthday.

A statement by the Chairman of the Forum and Governor of Plateau State Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong described Senator Almakura as an outstanding politician and a dogged fighter for democracy, human rights and the rights of people living with disabilities.

Governor Lalong said the former Governor of Nasarawa State and now Senator is a broad minded Nigerian who has continually embraced unity, peace, tolerance and oneness in his public and private life which has earned him admirers widely.

Lalong also commended the former Governor for his passion towards the development of the Northern Region both during his term as Governor of Nasarawa State and now that he is in the National Assembly.

He wished him many more years of good health, peace and goodwill and urges him to keep on serving his people and standing up for vulnerable people in society.

Similarly, the Forum has also felicitated with the First Lady of Plateau State Mrs. Regina Simon Lalong on the occasion of her birthday.

The forum says Mrs. Lalong is a lover of women, children and the youth with whom she has developed and nurtured close affinity through her SWITCH Foundation.

It noted that the First Lady has trained and empowered thousands of women and youths, with special focus on the girl child. This has assisted in reducing poverty, providing education, and emancipating them from some negative societal practices that trample on their rights.

They also observed that the SWITCH Foundation of Mrs. Lalong has also offered assistance to many indigent girls by sponsoring their education and ensuring that they choose career paths for a brighter future.

The Northern Governors also commended the role she has been playing with other wives of Governors under the Nigerian Governors Forum and the Northern Governors Wives Forum, where she currently serves as the Public Relations Officer.

They are happy  that through the Northern Governors Wives Forum, a lot of issues have been put on the front burner such as drug abuse, early marriage, harmful practices that affect women, as well as high rate of poverty and illiteracy which are being addressed in many ways.

The Forum wishes the Plateau First Lady many more years of sound health, God's blessings and fulfillment.
