Peaceful LG polls - Lalong has proven doubters wrong: Hon Yakubu Dati commisioner for lands and survey

By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos

Following the peaceful local government election conducted in Plateau state by the State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASEIC)the State Commissioner for Lands, Survey and Town Planning, Hon Yakubu Dati on Monday said that Governor Simon Lalong   has proved his doubters wrong .

Our correspondent  reports that several groups sponsored by the opposition parties had called for the postponement of the Local government council poll citing security .

Dati  who spoke  on a radio programme, monitored by our correspondent   in Jos  praised the electorate for their peaceful conduct and large turn out during the  election in the 17 Local Government Areas of the state.

He also  reacted to the exclusion of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from the Plateau State Local Government polls, saying PDP was responsible for its fate and not the APC.

Dati said " Politics is strategy and not emotions and sentiments as elections are not won and lost on the social media ,they are won in the field and ballot boxes ."

" PDP is the architect of it's problem ,We didn’t cause it, they shot themselves on the foot. It is a PDP stalwart  that took the party to the court, It happened to the APC  in Zamfara  where a member of the APC took the party to court."

"We won the governorship, the senate and all members of the House of Representatives and House of Assembly but we still lost because our member took us to court. So it is not our doing, it is their doing ,We reside  in a lawful society ,not a banana republic ,he stressed "Dati further stated.

"The APC as a party has high regard for the courts and believes that it is a very important part of the democratic culture"

Speaking on land adminstration in Plateau state , Dati said the fifty percent waiver on all land transactions in the state approved by Governor Simon Lalong is still on .

He said that  the Governor  recently approved the extension in view of the current economic situation which made it difficult for the public to benefit from the initial waiver.

Dati further said with the dwindling revenue generation from the oil sector, the ministry is exploring land-based revenue in collaboration with stakeholders to ensure maximum revenue generation for the overall development of the state.

Recently we  held a stakeholders’ engagement on “Efficient Lands Administration and Revenue Generation in Jos .

He   noted that land-based revenue has remained hugely untapped in Plateau and the return to the sector for adequate revenue generation was what informed the stakeholders’ engagement programme.

‘It is beyond argument that the world over, land-based revenue is the new black gold of the 21st century even more so with the dwindling income generated from crude oil occasioned by alternative means of energy such as solar and biofuel which is eroding the dependence hitherto placed on crude oil,’ Dati said.

‘In Plateau State, land-based revenue has remained hugely untapped and the returns from the sector are in dire need of a turnaround.

‘It is for this and other reasons that the Management of the Ministry deemed it necessary to organise this stakeholders’ engagement in order to bring both professionals, Technocrats, development partners and clients of the ministry under one roof to brainstorm on the way forward and to chart a way forward for the growth and development of the state through increased revenue generation.’

He explained that the Ministry has identified priority areas it intends to leverage in its bid to improve revenue in the state which includes enumeration of properties in the state; mandatory recertification of all certificates of occupancy; standardisation of conversion of titles from customary to statutory; massive issuance of demands notice for payment of ground rent and commencement of recertification within the Miango and Rantya layout.

PRESS RELEASE

BARRING PDP FROM PARTICIPATING IN THE PLATEAU STATE LG ELCETIONS, A SHOW OF COWARDICE, TRAVESTY OF JUSTICE AND A MOCKERY TO DEMOCRACY

By Clinton Garuba

Media consultant to Jonah David Jang

9th October, 2021

As Plateau people go to the polls today to elect Local Council Chairmen for the 17 Local Government Areas, it is unfortunate that what should have a evoked joy for the people as they file out to elect the leaders closest to them will be nothing more than a charade, a show of cowardice, mockery of democracy or simply standing logic on its head.

At no time in the history of Plateau State since the return of Democracy in 1999, has Plateau State experienced this kind of impunity as is perpetrated by the APC government of the day.  We must admit that this is the lowest we have descended to, by whatever parameters of governance we judge the current administration. To say that is it appalling that a government will do everything within its powers, not minding the political, socio-economic or even judicial consequences to the state and is to say the least.

This is a clear show of shame exhibited by the government and the APC in the State. If the APC government was as popular as it has portrayed itself to be, the right thing to do was to allow its state funded umpire conduct a free, fair and credible election to test its popularity.

The Plateau State government must bury its head in shame, denying the people their right to choice of candidates is the worst kind of impunity and anti-people treatment to receive from those who occupy elective office. If the performance of the government resonated with the people, there wouldn’t be any need to disenfranchise them but the only way out of a looming disgrace and a taste of what is to befall the APC anytime elections were held, was to remove the only hope of the people, the PDP from the ballot. What a show of cowardice.

The PDP approached the Courts, which should be the hope of the masses, with the hope that the sham of an election being held today will be stopped but the court in its wisdom thought it otherwise to allow the elections to hold. While it is too early to conclude that the Honourable judges erred, by not seeing the consequences of the elections, we hope that when the substantive suit is heard and the fallout of the elections will make them recant the decision and subsequently declare the election an illegality.

The will of the people to choose those who should govern them overrides the personal or even collective will of a few people to subvert the process that recruits leaders and twist it in favour of primordial sentiments over the truth.

Senator Jang believes that  truth, no matter how it is suppressed will always come to the fore and it is only a matter of time before the courts will prove that the desperation of the APC to capture power by force was an exercise in futility.

The act of cowardice displayed by the government and the APC in plateau state is a clear indication and further confirms that the people are not in support of the puppetry and subservience which the government of the day represents. To use state organs to deny parties participation in an election is a travesty and the height of mockery of democracy. This is not the Plateau that our founding fathers envisaged.

To say that the Governor who is a lawyer and had served as the Speaker of the State House of Assembly will engage in such blatant disregard for due process is a thing of concern, especially that it is ordinarily expected that he should be above board. Such acts by a few put a dent on the highly respected legal profession, which practitioners should know better.

As things stand now, the government has gone ahead with the process of affirming its candidates for the election, shamefully in some LGAs as sole candidates but plateau people must not despair. This is not the time to allow the desperation of a few people to cling on to power, make us lose faith with the PDP. We assure

YOU ARE THE GREATEST ENEMY OF DEMOCRACY, GROUP LAMBAST JONAH JANG FORMER FORMER GOVERNOR OF PLATEAU STATE

"SHUT UP! YOU ARE THE GREATEST ENEMY OF DEMOCRACY IN THE HISTORY OF PLATEAU STATE"; GROUP LAMBASTS JONAH JANG OVER CRITICISM OF PLATEAU LG POLLS.

We are appalled to read some offensive write up from a certain Clinton Garuba who claims to be speaking for former Governor of Plateau State Dara Jonah David Jang as a Media Consultant or (Kwan-sultant). In the shameless statement, h3 called the hugely peaceful, successful and court-sanctioned Local Government elections held today throughout the 17 Local Government areas of Plateau State as "show of shame, travesty of justice, cowardice and rape of democracy.

We would have ignored this piece of trash as a "shure shure" (ranting) of a nonentity, rusty, jobless and shameless busy body, but because of the historical antecedents of the message and the messenger in the democratic history of Plateau State, we cannot allow it pass or fail to put the records straight.

Let's begin with Dara Jonah Jang who is our elders statesman which we would have loved to accord the dignity he deserves if he had shut up his mouth about democracy in Plateau. His antecedents are very well known to even children who were not born during his reign of impunity where he was practically a bully, despot, dictator and bigot of the highest order.

We find it preposterous that Baba Jang, as he is fondly called will have the effontry to issue a statement condemning an election that followed due process and survived rigorous scrutiny of the courts, including the second highest court in the land (Court of Appeal) even up to few hours before the opening of polls.

This is the height of irresponsibility and rascality from an arrogant leader that forgets that he has had his time and history has judged him harshly as far as democracy and the rule of law is concerned in Plateau StateandNigeria at large.

Does he think we have forgotten how he recklessly trampled on Court judgements that were validly delivered during his reign of impunity? Let us remind him about the following.

1. The late Baba Amagon won election as Executive Chairman of Bokkos Local Government under ACN but the undemocratic dictator forcefully removed him when he came into office. Despite several court judgements mandating him to reinstate him, he refused blatantly. It took the intervention of his alma mater the Kuru Old Boys Association who reminded him that Baba Amagon was his Head Boy in Secondary school. He reluctantly swore him in after 2 wasted years. Baba Amagon died out of frustration and humiliation he suffered in the hands of Clinton Garuba's "hero of democracy" Jonah Jang.

2. Late Chief Hitler Dadi also won election as Executive Chairman of Langtang North Local Government under the same ACN but the same emperor Jang forcefully removed him and other validly elected Local Government Chairmen but he refused to reinstate them in despite several court orders. They fought and got tired and case could not be solved because Jang hated the opposition. It was the grace of God which brought in a true Democrat and emancipator, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong who ensured that some remedy was done to compensate them after they were destroyed by the dictator.

3. What about the late Chief Dan Dul who also won election and was denied the seat completely by the same emperor Jang? He was also not sworn in despite several Court pronouncements. The emperor and enemy of democracy was at work. Guess who ensured he got some respite by swearing him in, Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong. They will not tell you this one. Another case of a Professor who won the Chairmanship of Kanam LGA but got the same treatment is also there. They think we have forgotten.

4. The same man issuing sentimental Press Statements all over the place decided to demonstrate the highest level of ethnic bigotry and arrogance by jettisoning the gentleman understanding on zoning when he insisted in bringing his brother from the almighty Du Kingdom to succeed him as Governor in 2015. Plateau holds LG elections, as Lalong commends peaceful conduct of elections

By Golok Nanmwa,Jos

9th October, 2021.

The Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC),  on Saturday, conducted the long-awaited local government election  in the 17 LGAs of the state.

The election witnessed the participation of several  political parties, except the Peoples Democratic Party PDP  which was barred by  PLASIEC from participating in the elections .

Our  reporter, who visited some wards on Saturday, learnt that the elections started at the right time by 8pm  and witnessed

large turnout in rural communities and then partial low turnout of electorate in some areas in the Northern Senatorial zone .

In a swift reaction, the Governor of Plateau state Simon Lalong  who spoke to newsmen  in Ajikamai Polling unit in Shendam local Government of the state praised the electorate for their peaceful conduct and large turn out to elect their Chairmen and Councillors in the ongoing Local Government elections holding throughout the 17 Local Government areas on the 9th October 2021.

The Governor who voted alongside his wife, First Regina Lalong and other close family members  at about 10:30am, said he was impressed with the turn out and enthusiasm in his ward and the encouraging reports from various parts of the State which equally indicated a peaceful exercise and the readiness of voters to choose their leaders.

He said going by the fact that PLASIEC had assured all political parties, candidates and the entire electorate of the their readiness for the exercise having planned over a long period of time and engaged all stakeholders, there is no cause for alarm.

Asked if he was apprehensive of the elections not holding due to the court case instituted by the PDP at the Court of Appeal Jos seeking an injunction to stop the elections, which went deep into the night before the scheduled date, the Governor said:

"We had no fear because we know the courts will do justice according to our laws. Even if they had ruled that the elections will not hold, we would have had nothing to do but to obey the ruling. The APC as a party has high regard for the courts and believes that it is a very important part of the democratic culture which we must build. You remember the Zamfara case where we even won the elections but the courts voided it and in Rivers where we were stopped from participating. Now that in this case the court ruled in our favour, we are going ahead with the elections peacefully".

On the significance of the elections and the security arrangements put in place, the Governor said the transition from one Local Government Adminstration to another is a thing that many people of Plateau have yearned for in the which by the grace of God is happening without any challenges.

He said though there were concerns about security, the Government took all necessary measures to ensure that this elections come and go smoothly without any hindrance and has charged security agencies to deploy their personnel all over the State.

The Governor also urged all citizens to ignore rumours and fake news being pedelled about the elections as all parties and their supporters were given equal opportunity to participate in the process leading to today.

He assured the State that the will of the people expressed through the ballot box will be allowed to prevail as PLASIEC has given all assurances of fairness, justice and adherence to the rules of the game

PLATEAU LG POLLS!

Engineer Buhari Auwal, an APC Chieftain from Jos North and a staunch supporter of Governor Simon Lalong in an interview by correspondence, had this to say;

"We have just finished exercising our franchise at polling unit 027, Audu Ken-Ken Street, Abba Na Shehu Ward to elect Chairman and Councillor for Jos North L.G.C for the first time since 14 years back”

"Special appreciation to our peace loving Governor Simon Lalong for creating the enabling environment that broke the jinx and bursted the bubble of crisis merchants who'd prefer hell to break loose than for citizens to exercise their franchise to elect their leaders in the grassroot and third tier of Government"

"Big kudos to the Security Agencies for being locked and loaded to deal with miscreants wanting to forment trouble and sabotage the enabling environment."
